South Africa Informal Settlement data collection and advocacy key to helping fix basic service gaps

- Shumani Luruli is program coordinator for South Africa’s Planact and a member of IBP’s Asivikelane campaign, which works with informal settlement residents to track whether they are receiving services like clean water and safe sanitation and to advocate for better services. The country’s informal settlements had largely been denied these basic services in the past, but in 2020, informal settlements, 12 community organizations and the International Budget Partnership rose up to change that. Since then, partner organizations and hundreds of residents have been collecting data on service gaps and pushing for meaningful government action.
