Good to see a RUclipsr penning a bike for a long time and actually taking care of it rather than just bolting new sponsored bits on it. Well done you!
I’d personally either dunk the centre stand in Coca Cola overnight before starting the work with autosol and a big red scotch brite or more probably just get the Hammerite out. Either way I’d love more of this sort of thing, more people should work on their bikes.

  • @s.gossett5966

I hate reinstalling springs on stands. Another trick that may be handy in the future.
Instead of putting the spring on last, connect it first and then use the stand as your leverage. Sometimes you can even hyperextend the stand itself to make it easier, but those small loops and fittings can be especially troublesome just having the larger piece to pull on can make the task go faster.
Things can still go ping, so be mindful.

For getting old paint and rust off a wire brush on an electric drill works well and is faster than sandpaper or a Dremel. I'd personally take the rusty bits and get them sand blasted down to white metal and then get them re-powder coated or plastic-dipped - the only reason is the coating is harder wearing and tends to remain intact much longer for items that are subject to impact from road crud. Usually a good idea to put a bit of grease on the centre stand pivot points.

You did well. Rattle can is pretty good stuff these days. I use it often. Keep the can moving about a foot away and not too much at once, 3 or 4 coats is right. Can't do without a center stand. Have them on most all my bikes. BMW's you can spin them around one direction or another for most models. You have a flat they are hard to beat. Good vid. Always work safe. That was a workout cleaning the stand. You did well. A small sandblaster with glass beads would have done well too. Those look good considering the time and conditions you ride in. I got my BMW K1200RS off the centerstand yesterday and then couldn't get the side stand down. With a dodgy knee replacement I thought I was really in a mess but I got it back on the centerstand. Those springs, that's a good technique as long as you don't run out of stretch. Beats pulling by hand. Sometimes vice grips or a C-clamp helps. I have a SW Motech stand for my new R1200 nine T UGS. I hate crawling around right now. Those lights lok good for the money. Anything is better than nothing as long as it works dependably. Chapter two awaits. Next time

Andy - “A” for Effort. “A” for skill with a rattle can. “A” for ingenuity with the ratchet strap - impressive, especially with the acknowledgement of the whole thing going “ping!” and removing an extremity. However, the categories of Time saving and Longevity of Work will not have such excellent scores. A rotary wire brush in power tool (assuming you don’t have a sand blasting cabinet in your shed) would have made preparing things easier. I’m also dubious if “rattle can” black will last for two reasons. Firstly, no anti-rust treatment was made and secondly this sort of paint is very soft. I think you’ll find that you will be revisiting this part again. As usual though, a very entertaining video. Thanks.
    And she’s a she.
ps. As others have said, a powder coated finish would have been the way to go and just think, you would not have had to purchase new crash bars and you could have had any colour you wanted.

Good that your C stand lasted that long. Mine needed doing after less than 6k and 2 years. Dealer repainted it and ive greased it and put hose around it but in the year since the bit thats not covered by the hose is going again. BMW wont cover corrosion on it as its "influenced by the user". Ive always cleaning the bike and dont use it in winter... Powder coating it next.

TMF. I so enjoyed watching this video. I’m not being nasty when I say I was sharing your pain every step of the way because that is usually me it happens to. Difference is your demeanour is peeved but calm. I would have turned the air blue with frustration and rage.😅

Call the bike what you like, with the centre stand springs, I have found the easiest way is to put the spring on first, then the dowel on the spring side , then use the centre stand as a lever put in the other side. Still a bit of a pain ,a lot easier than trying to attach the springs afterwards

they do treatments for rust inhibiting, when i did that to mine I also took it down to metal in places, but I coated mine in the rust inhibiter which made it go black, then sprayed it in primer, followed by heat proof black paint, sanded down with 160 then coated again in gloss heat proof, it came out looking factory, and so far have had Zero issues, but i warn you do the process in a well ventilated area and allow at least 5 hours for the first 4 steps , the gloss final 30 mins between coats,

Has to be said Andy that although you’ve been looking after it to be fair, the GS has held up amazing well. A lot of critique of BMW out there but the build quality/longevity is still there overall…..thanks, great video!

Agree with all the comments about getting the stand properly blasted and recoated, but never with powder coat, one stone chip and the water will get in and pretty soon the coating will flake off. Get it done with twin pack black paint. As for the her him they them thing, leave that for the people who think it makes a difference, the bike is an It!

Every couple of years or so the cross bar on my GS centre stand becomes rusty,.
My bodge solution is; clean, rub down with sandpaper, white spirit to wash off debris, then Hammerite smooth black paint.

Stand looking a lot better Andy, but rattle can paint tends to be soft and will chip easily, especially the horizontal section in front of the wheel. What I did was to wrap some paint protect vinyl around the horizontal section, the thick stuff used to protect in front of a rear wheel arch, and it has remained chip and rust free. 👍

Enjoyed this video Andy, Its always good to have a 'Nigel' as backup when you mess things up. I do think its good to get to know your bike by wrenching on it. Even if it doesn't always go to plan.

BMW subsequently fitted a plastic guard to the centre stand, easy to retrofit with cable ties . This will protect the centre stand from chips and rust . Probably not too expensive to buy. TTFN.

Personally Andy I would have taken parts like the crash bars and centre stand to a powder be powder coated. Cheaper than replacements and a lot more durable in the long run.

I hate springs, somehow I always end up in pain. even with the right tool. After you clean as close to bare metal as you can. Use some Phosphoric Acid the active ingredient in the expensive rust eater. Changes the rust oxide. To an oxide which is hard and supposedly water resistant for next time. Which is about as good as you can do for a DIY paint job.
Anyway nice to see the GS getting some TLC.

Nice work TMF I believe but could be wrong that all or most bike stands are made by one or two companies and never to a great standard, as everyone will know they rust fairly easy and seem to have just one thin coat of paint from new. I always give the stand a good clean and at least once a year a rub down and spray with Hammerite to keep the rust at bay. I never take it off the bike because I’m as handy with the tools as you maybe even worse.

50 shades of grey LOL. Hammerite or Simonez Tough paint are good options as they don't need a primer coat. I've also put helicopter tape on the cross member in the past, secured with cable ties to take the brunt of the stone impacts. At the moment I've got some of the plastic sleeving you put on 15mm copper piping to tidy the plumbing up rather than paint it I had lying around in the garage after refurbing the bathroom on my centre stand, again held in place with cable ties and that seems to be doing a good job so far. Good luck with the crash bars, I hope you've got an extra long socket to get the nut undone on the rear top mount as my normal sockets were not quite long enogh to go over the long bolt that goes through the frame and onto the nut itself. Ebay is your friend if you don't have a set 😉

While your are completing the refresh - remove the gear lever pivot and 'add blue grease' but also check the two rose joints on the gear lever movement - Very easy to reomve and refit = NO Tools required - just use your thumb nail and unclip the small clip - Looks like a C clip on a cocktail stick - the insert can be loaded with grease and any excess gets pushed out when you refit. Unclip the one nearest the front wheel first, it gets better acces to the rears one. And to quote a certain Haynes manual - refitting is the reverse - It does make a difference to gearchanges. Certainly improved my R1200RS gear selection.

As you have other bike to use while the GS is off the road, I would have taken all the rusty metalwork off the bike and have a local specialist shot blast it, then galvanize everything before black powder coating. Would probably work out cheaper than the replacement crash bars, and you could be confident that the finish would be better than original.
Those fog lights look good value, may have to order a pair for my Crosstourer, unless I bite the bullet, and trade it in for a brand new CRF300. I think it was you that said it's much more fun riding a slow bike fast, than riding a fast bike slowly, and as I get older, I'm finding the Crosstourer to be getting a bit unwieldy.

Go with Simoniz tough paint. I learnt it from Delboys garage channel, really good stuff. No primer or laquer needed either. Ventilation too and ensure your bikes are covered for over spray. 🙈
