One of the things you mention is that you were a system thinker all your life. I think your video can lead to another one (don't know if you made it already) about habits. Some people can start using the system thinking from one day to another. Maybe another one hasn't stopped a single moment in their life to think "Well, why does something work like that? What is the output of that thing". Using a simple example if someone tries to lose weight (Input), we will tend to think that if that person actually goes to the gym, eat better, sleep more, they will get fit. But why and how can someone goes thru this process in a easier manner than others? And if someone hasn't had the habit of thinking that way, how can they do it? Great video, Sam.
I will never be a consultant, but your content is pure gold. I don't know why there's so many motivational gurus and only so few that talk about advanced stuff like this. I've been sick for the past few days and just binge-watched your stuff. Simply because my financial goals are very similar to where you're at at age 28. Will there ever be a program for non-consultants and business in general? I'll sign up immediately.
Why do you need a 'program'? Everything you need to build any kind of business is right there in front of you, it is a question of applying different resources to what you want to achieve. If you lack practical skills, you can overcome this by hiring people who can do what you need. Having a clear idea of what you want to do is the vital part, being vague and general is what holds you back.
Because a 'program' would save me time in having to find all the resources over the internet. Simply cuts the learning curve. Sure you can do it without one, but I don't have time to do all this research and test different stuff that's out there or free. Most of it is BS anyways.

Because basically what a beginner consultant does is solve a problem of specific niche in a "done for you" system. So think about it. For example you want to help technicians get highly paying clients. In his course he teaches how to get the specific "need or desire" which is the highly paying clients. So imagine yourself are a technician and learned how to get highly paying clients. You solved your problem by his program. You don't have to be a consultant

This video needs to be heard more in 2024: where everything is a silo & each creator sells you on the 'best' and 'top' ways that is guaranteed to change your life (true to an extent) but failed to mention in 'time'. Instead of marketing their solutions as a set of simple rules that emerges results. Also a reminder to consumers that every opportunity is bound to be disrupted by the market that is why the factor of applying NOW is also crucial.

I am intrigued by how system thinking can be applied to storytelling within content marketing - how understanding a macro-narrative on a particular subject or industry, during a particular point of time, gives us the acumen on how we can best position our micro-narrative, which resonates powerfully with audiences as it links them to the bigger picture, the emerging patterns of innovation... collective feelings.... the macro journey, as opposed to our isolated business story or singular piece of content.
I usually think in systems which is a reflection of my training as an engineer. However, watching your video has reminded me that I need to apply this thinking more often until I naturally look at life that way. This is a methodology which should be taught in schools.

That's a really good one. The best systems thinker I know is Charlie Munger. He combines the most systems you can think of from science, psychology and more and brings them down to business. He is on the lookout for a confluence of effects within all the systems that he calls "Lollapalooza Effect". He never made a list of his mental models but if you haven't checkout the Farnam Street mental models list, Sam I think you should check it out. It’s so funny how a smart guy like Sam Oven says: “we’re not born knowing stuff, we don’t know anything other than some survival instincts which are programmed into us from our evolution”. How can such a logical smart guy say such a thing? it’s like saying that a table came into existence from nothing and just evolved into 4 sticks and a table lol. The answer is God @samovens. Sam, do you really think everyone should learn to become masterful systems thinkers? Have you ever taken a critical thinking class and looked around you wondering why people just don't "get it?" Is it because you opened up a book and studied systems thinking more than the next guy? Nope. Is it because you practiced systems thinking more than most other people? Yes! The truth is some people are wired to be better system thinkers than others. This is an innate personality preference. When someone like you (NT personality type - systems thinker) is resting, your "savior" functioning is to think through abstract systems and create order where there is chaos. Just take Jay Abraham and Chet Holmes. They both said themselves that 95%+ of people are not very strategic (big picture oriented) and are much more tactical (linear/details process oriented). This isn't by accident, this is just how things are. With that said, everyone CAN do systems thinking to an extent. It's just that most people will do it to keep their head above water (its more of their demon functioning rather than their savior functioning), rather than do it while they are resting. My advice for most people is to understand the importance of systems thinking, but recognize if that is truly one of their strengths or not. And instead of them trying to be a solo one man shop (which is the tactical way of going about business. It can work and obviously it did in your case, but most people are better off working in partnerships), they would look to outsource some of their systems thinking to a consultant (or business partner) who LOVES to think through systems in abstract ways. This is much more strategic, leveraging the strengths of others to help supplement your weaknesses. Just like you and your community. If you look up the cognitive function "Fe," you will find that this is your blindspot. You are not very good at seeing the differences in values of people across the tribal spectrum. People with this Fe personality preference can "feel out" rooms and know the reason why people feel things emotionally very easily (typically high EQ). Should you look to become a master at human values because that will help out your community? Or should you outsource that mastery to someone else who does that in their sleep? I think you probably know the answer to that one. This can all be traced back to personality patterns and the innate differences that exist in humans (which create our strengths/weaknesses, etc. These are things we are practicing while resting and for enjoyment). There's a lot more I can say to validate this point as I've studied it for a while, but I have to get some work done lol. Last point I want to make to anyone who is reading this... Another way to think about this is would you rather compete with someone who thinks through abstract systems in their sleep, or do you want to try and master it yourself, if its something that you find really draining?
component thinkers or mindsets are ok to a certain limit. What limit is that? well that depends. Since they have little cohesion they tend to pseudo-magnify their presence and create imbalance and sometmes are cancerous..failing to understand they are part of the 'system'. Sam, what I understand is that very few component thinkers can become 'System Thinkers' its just too energy draining...I beleive you have the knack to see that upfront ;)

One of the biggest blunders that I find absolutely hilarious is the one-child policy in China. They had a problem with overpopulation, so they took it upon themselves to lower the population. That plan worked perfectly, and it was successful. However, they forgot the important fact that people get OLD. As the population slowed in growth, people stayed alive. They retired, they reap the benefits of contributing nothing to society while milking it until they eventually die. In the meantime, the workforce of China has shrank because they only limited the input without thinking about the future of the components that were already in play.

Every prescriptive approach to a problem has flaws, this is inherent in the exclusive nature of your thinking. Systems thinking is extremely valuable, we can produce a macro perspective and recognize the subtle relationships of each element within a 'system' that can give us some tangible means to construct a response. However, systems thinking can also create different types of problems-you have identified the 'Sun' as being the environment, but our wonderful machined system can allow us to ignore Fe matters, those intangible, human qualities which actually influence people way more than many are prepared to admit. We can produce our magic machine, our business systems, our procedural algorithms, but over time, we can accumulate lots of these other kinds of problems, which systems thinking cannot even conceptualize - this is why empires fall, why seemingly 'ideal' projects can fail. Just something to factor into your systems paradigm.

This is great thanks Sam. I am intrigued by how system thinking can be applied to storytelling within content marketing - how understanding a macro-narrative on a particular subject or industry, during a particular point of time, gives us the acumen on how we can best position our micro-narrative, which resonates powerfully with audiences as it links them to the bigger picture, the emerging patterns of innovation... collective feelings.... the macro journey, as opposed to our isolated business story or singular piece of content.
I usually think in systems which is a reflection of my training as an engineer. However, watching your video has reminded me that I need to apply this thinking more often until I naturally look at life that way. This is a methodology which should be taught in schools.

Because systems thinking is a loop I also think of it as being reverse engineered, what I mean by this is I ask myself: What are the final outcomes desired for the business and how can I develop processes to achieve these desired outcomes and what do I need to input in my business in order for these processes to work in the first place and thus achieve these desired outcomes! Haha :)

That's a really good one. The best systems thinker I know is Charlie Munger. He combines the most systems you can think of from science, psychology and more and brings them down to business.
He is on the lookout for a confluence of effects within all the systems that he calls "Lollapalooza Effect". He never made a list of his mental models but if you haven't checkout the Farnam Street mental models list, Sam I think you should check it out. Insanely valuable for a systems thinker.

Sam, do you really think everyone should learn to become masterful systems thinkers?
Have you ever taken a critical thinking class and looked around you wondering why people just don't "get it?"
Is it because you opened up a book and studied systems thinking more than the next guy? Nope.
Is it because you practiced systems thinking more than most other people? Yes!
The truth is some people are wired to be better system thinkers than others. This is an innate personality preference. When someone like you (NT personality type - systems thinker) is resting, your "savior" functioning is to think through abstract systems and create order where there is chaos.
Just take Jay Abraham and Chet Holmes. They both said themselves that 95%+ of people are not very strategic (big picture oriented) and are much more tactical (linear/details process oriented). This isn't by accident, this is just how things are.
With that said, everyone CAN do systems thinking to an extent. It's just that most people will do it to keep their head above water (its more of their demon functioning rather than their savior functioning), rather than do it while they are resting.
My advice for most people is to understand the importance of systems thinking, but recognize if that is truly one of their strengths or not. And instead of them trying to be a solo one man shop (which is the tactical way of going about business. It can work and obviously it did in your case, but most people are better off working in partnerships), they would look to outsource some of their systems thinking to a consultant (or business partner) who LOVES to think through systems in abstract ways. This is much more strategic, leveraging the strengths of others to help supplement your weaknesses.
Just like you and your community. If you look up the cognitive function "Fe," you will find that this is your blindspot. You are not very good at seeing the differences in values of people across the tribal spectrum. People with this Fe personality preference can "feel out" rooms and know the reason why people feel things emotionally very easily (typically high EQ).
Should you look to become a master at human values because that will help out your community? Or should you outsource that mastery to someone else who does that in their sleep? I think you probably know the answer to that one.
This can all be traced back to personality patterns and the innate differences that exist in humans (which create our strengths/weaknesses, etc. These are things we are practicing while resting and for enjoyment).
There's a lot more I can say to validate this point as I've studied it for a while, but I have to get some work done lol.
Last point I want to make to anyone who is reading this... Another way to think about this is would you rather compete with someone who thinks through abstract systems in their sleep, or do you want to try and master it yourself, if its something that you find really draining?
component thinkers or mindsets are ok to a certain limit. What limit is that? well that depends. Since they have little cohesion they tend to pseudo-magnify their presence and create imbalance and sometmes are cancerous..failing to understand they are part of the 'system'.
Sam, what I understand is that very few component thinkers can become 'System Thinkers' its just too energy draining...I beleive you have the knack to see that upfront ;)

One of the biggest blunders that I find absolutely hilarious is the one-child policy in China. They had a problem with overpopulation, so they took it upon themselves to lower the population. That plan worked perfectly, and it was successful. However, they forgot the important fact that people get OLD. As the population slowed in growth, people stayed alive. They retired, they reap the benefits of contributing nothing to society while milking it until they eventually die. In the meantime, the workforce of China has shrank because they only limited the input without thinking about the future of the components that were already in play.

Every prescriptive approach to a problem has flaws, this is inherent in the exclusive nature of your thinking. Systems thinking is extremely valuable, we can produce a macro perspective and recognize the subtle relationships of each element within a 'system' that can give us some tangible means to construct a response. However, systems thinking can also create different types of problems-you have identified the 'Sun' as being the environment, but our wonderful machined system can allow us to ignore Fe matters, those intangible, human qualities which actually influence people way more than many are prepared to admit.
We can produce our magic machine, our business systems, our procedural algorithms, but over time, we can accumulate lots of these other kinds of problems, which systems thinking cannot even conceptualize - this is why empires fall, why seemingly 'ideal' projects can fail. Just something to factor into your systems paradigm.
