  • By the time of the so-called economic bubble in the Japanese economy in the late 1980s, Japanese car companies had made significant progress in car development and production. Innovations were everywhere, from the design, where squares and angles were beginning to give way to softer and more rounded shapes, especially noticeable in concept cars, to the technological aspects, from digital dashboards and VTEC, to four-wheel steering. Competition among Japanese sports cars was becoming more and more fierce each day, with cars like the Nissan 300ZX, Toyota Supra, and Mazda RX-7. The stars of today's video also wanted a piece of the pie; however, by the late 1980s, their sports flagship, the Mitsubishi Starion, was gradually becoming obsolete, both morally and technically, and could not present proper competition to the newer cars from its rivals. As a result, it would be replaced by one of the most technologically advanced and insane car of its decade: Mitsubishi 3000GT / GTO!

This was very well done 👌
The similarities the Stealth shared with the
'88 Intrepid concept are undeniable and
    something I wasn't aware of.

Long time owner. Very accurate information here. Even the obscure racing info is spot on.

Glad to hear that! When I was writing up the script for this video - I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of support from 3000GT/GTO/Stealth owners, and the 3SI forum, along with the 3Swiki helped me out a lot! Browsed around & found an answer to just about every question I had! 😁

I had a Starion, wished for a 3000GT and ended up with a first gen Eclipse.

One of my favorite cars is the Mitsubishi stereon I wish they would bring back Mitsubishi sports cars.

Mitsubishi always seemed to be doing things differently (good and bad). They seemed to emphasize and pursue technological complexity in their later cars which added weight. I had an early Tredia turbo sedan and drove the wheels off it. It was a fun cheap simple car with exploitable performance. I never got an Eclipse but I think they were similar in their approach to them and were a faster lightweight package which is why they are revered over the 3000GT.

You got wrong, gto mr was rwd only

The MR is most definitely a 4wd car, it does however lack the 4ws of its weightier brothers. the only none 4wd variant was the abomination 4 pot n/a - thankfully limited to the USD market.

I need a longitudinal I6TT. This is non-negotiable. Ultimately, I chose the SupraTT.

Chrysler is why Mitsubishi failed! They did this then only thing "good" since was the Evo but they gave up

Fail. Starion was RWD, could be V8 swapped, and the widebody looked right. 3000GT was FWD and heavy and couldn't fit adequately wide tires. Only the first 2 years of Stealth R/T looked right.

3000gt had a 4wd model vr4 turbo 4wd active aero that actually worked

    • @Nyaonyx
      @Nyaonyx Месяц назад +2

Starion is the RWD, GTO is the 4WD, and the FTO is Fwd.

      Fail??

OP is clueless. Plenty of 3000GTs are AWD, can fit very wide tires, but don't need to. I've launched these on unprepped streets with crap tires and 600+awp without any issues. Also the 3rd year of the Stealth looked the same as the first 2 years..
