He introduced his book: Trees of Power: 10 essential arboreal allies. Along with your YT channel and a couple other texts (Shephard, Falk, etc), it completed shifted my gardening paradigm. this video confirms it: 2022 must be the year I find a way to start trees in earnest, however best I can in my tiny, shady, suburban lot. I've got a dozen figs in my first nursery bed this year, but I can do better.

    • @haram2163
      @haram2163 3 года назад +1

      Agreed. I intend to really go for it when I prune the trees this year. Also trying a lot from seed as well. We have about 20 fruit varieties I dug 100m of swales last year, but only had 5 volunteer peach trees to plant out. Water harvesting and directing will play a big part in the plans for Autumn.

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  3 года назад +5

      The beauty of starting trees in your tiny spot is that once they grow for a year they can be sold, gifted, traded, secretly planted, whatever! They can go elsewhere for their full life. You can truly be a nursery, as in helping little babies and kids get a good start and then wishing them the best as they head out into the world!

    You should consider teaming up for a longs form class or seminar. I’d love to get the 2 of you in a room together for a weekend and just pick your brains.

    So many interesting points here. I kept wondering how much of all those thousands of shrubs and trees were planted from seed or bare root or starts of some kind? Did he acquire or barter for the seed or just save over time from his own stock mostly?
    Great walk and talk! Thanks 😊

      A mix... He bought in stock from nurseries (Goumis as one example) but most/all the rest are grown from seed and cuttings from his nursery.

    4:25 I'm pretty sure that's a Hawk moth of some kind. At first I thought it was a Hummingbird Hawk Moth but they're only found in Eurasia, as far as I'm a ware. My Google-fu says it's possibly a Nessus Sphinx Moth, the colours seem right.

    That Space lotus that he talked about at the end is the one that I wanted to send you but it had sold out. It is one of the best cultivars and always sells out fast on every website. I can see the two of you trading tubers in the future
    Edit: Ken's Dream Lotus, which you have, is that space lotus crossed with an american lotus

    If this video is getting more attention, it’s because Roots & Refuge did a similar “swale pit” video.
