Sit there and count your fingers What can you do Old girl you're through Sit there, count your little fingers Unhappy little girl blue. Sit there and count the raindrops Falling on you It's time you knew All you can ever count on Are the raindrops That fall on little girl blue Won't you just sit there Count the little raindrops Falling on you 'Cause it's time you knew All you can ever count on Are the raindrops That fall on little girl blue No use old girl You might as well surrender 'Cause your hopes are getting slender and slender Why won't somebody send a tender blue boy To cheer up little girl blue
I saw Chet 3 times at Bourbon Street in Toronto, spellbinding. The timbre of his voice, the lyrical phrasing, was always haunting. A master at conveying emotion with the words. His beautiful trumpet playing was sparse, gorgeous, and conveyed the mood perfectly. As close to perfection as one can get, such a satisfying experience. I'm so appreciative that I heard him live a few times.
you're truly blessed to have seen such a great artist perform while he was alive. Most of the musicians are usually dead by the time I discover them on youtube or whatever. That's just the way things are nowadays for me.
This video just made me cry a little. This remembrance of his life through his outstanding music and old photos... sad to see. I was born in 1991, but I almost wish I was much older to have seen him perform live. It's 2015 and his music still stands out as a jewel of a bygone era of jazz. The music of today is nothing compared to this.
I agree, Luis, I knew Chet over many years, as a musician but also as a gentle soul who loved his music and who was a perfectionist in it. I saw him fade with time, and I knew why. But he left us SO much, his legacy is stupendous in terms of talent. What a gifted artist he was. RIP, Chet, we love you and miss you!
You are so right, "Luis" -- I don't like the pictures of him above, he looks haggard and worn (and is), but his talent is still SO OBVIOUS, which makes it all the more sad. I wish I could have heard him years ago, in Europe where he performed more than here in America, I think they were a bit more tolerant of his "condition" there! I cannot look at some of the above video, but I sure can hear the talent in it! RIP, Chet, we still love you.
Strange to me how such a man with so many emotional demons biting at him could produce such soulful and melodic tunes. He was truly a gifted and remarkable human being in which the world and its goodness will never produce the likes.... Grai Michael Cash
It isn't strange really, "Grai" but it IS the mark of a gifted artist who truly FELT every note he sang, same with his trumpet -- even the TONE of his trumpet and flugelhorn broadcast a melancholy tone and a kind of pain, but truly beautiful, like no other musician I've ever heard sound that way on BOTH instruments, his voice and his horns.
What a nice way to say it, "MAAD MIKE" and so true. He had good times with his music and some bad times personally, but he put everything right out there in his music and it WAS truly a gift to us!
This makes me want to move to Seattle and get a studio and sit near the window and look out at the rain falling with candles around me and I'm tucked inside a blanket
I could cry when I see this genius.despite his problems he retained his ability to the day he died and even in his worst hours managed to produce some memorable music.still revered by the people that know.what a legacy.many thanks.
No use, old girl, you might as well surrender, your hopes are getting slender, why won''t somebody send a tender blue boy to cheer up little girl blue.
Can't believe people are arguing about the pianist. It doesn't matter if the guy from the video is counting it off- use your ears! This is Enrico Pieranunzi on piano- I'm a huge fan of his, I also know him well, and could spot his playing anywhere.
+dwhieldon Enrico Pieranunzi: an absolute master! And that sensible accompanist/arranger on Soft Journey and all those Philology sessions w. Chet. Whenever you listen to "Night Bird", there's his sign, and a standard Chet Baker loved so much.... Having Pieranunzi recounting me some stories about this meeting, has been a true privilege!
i'm 17 years old and I wish I would have had the oppurtunity 2 meet Chet Baker or 2 hav been alive during his era of music and its sad 2 c his music kinda die and hear the crap they call music 2day
has not everuone had a day-when only "blue songs" pay attendance as companions - and the only ones around? any one who may try deny this...i know to be a liar. so much for old blue-steady to the heart; phantasms of the past.
LOVE the great Enrico Pieranunzi's chords on the intro -- well, all the way through, just beautiful! A masterful pianist, who just accelerates Chet's great talent.
Well, lucky you! I am studying music in order to be a professionnal jazz pianist and sometimes I envy people who are just happy listening to good music like you do. Even if these are exciting studies, it's a lot of frustration because you are never satisfied enough! I miss listening to good music without analysing (because I have to!) and just enjoying it. Sometimes I think about getting a shitty job, buying my records and spending my life like this! Greetings, Romain
Gracias
if this isnt a heartbreaker i dont know what is and ive been around over seven decades.chets life was a bit chaotic to say the least but he is a legend make no mistake.of all the jazz greats this man touched me the most.i guess through his eyes things were different but he gave us something magical.i hope he found peace.many thanks yougianfir.
I've always loved to sing this song... This is a great version... Nina Simone also does it Brilliantly...XXX xy Chet RIP Bless both of your Great Hearts... XX xy
The part where Strazzeri counts down at the beginning is taken from the movie "Let's Get Lost",where they play a tune called Imagination in that sequence
Thanks for the info, I was a music major and I love all forms of music. Jazz is my favorite. I love Chet,s voice and he was not a modern jazz singer. He was just a great jazz singer and a great musician with a style like no other. I loved this pure voice no one has come close to him in all these years.
You can tell how much he FEELS the words at 6:08 through about 6:18 when he scrunches up his face while singing. One can NOT deny how much Chet put his whole being into his songs, whether vocal or horns. He truly left us a legacy, not to be forgotten!
Seems I'm echoing most other comments: This is an exquisite video, footage I'd never seen before - a real turn on. This is a wonderful rendition by the master. Thanks very much for this treat.
The Pianist for this recording is Enrico Pieranunzi. Strazzeri was the pianist for the Let's Get Lost Recording.... Little Girl Blue was not recorded on Let's Get Lost. Check amazon ...

Piano player's playing is also sublime.
well, it's the great Enrico Pieranunzi
Yesterday at night I was walking alone in Paris with chet baker in my ears, it was magical.
I saw Chet 3 times at Bourbon Street in Toronto, spellbinding. The timbre of his voice, the lyrical phrasing, was always haunting. A master at conveying emotion with the words. Just beautifully said... The music cheers up this little girl blue
The best from the Covid, as a retired horn player & singer has been the discovery of chet baker. How did I miss you?
Love ...just love Chet Baker.....such a great legacy of the Blues and Jazz....he is never forgotten......
Holy crap, that's a musician ..... such incredible soul in every note..... awesome.
my favourite artist makes 7 mins 20 seconds peace and rest in this mad world
chet was just a wandering soul, searching for peace in a world that has none.
... Shut up dude
no need for you wander in the world, Chet was the soul of this world

Seems as if Chet's unhappiness is the gift he gave to us.

His gift, his legacy, is the soulful blues and jazz music he left us, so memorable, so beautiful, so mournfully sad at times, but that was Chet!
@@miketype1each that is the most beautiful, stirring and ironic assessment l have ever heard.. and completely true.
Pieranunzi & Baker just speak as one, pure beauty!

❤🤗Absolutely divine thank you Rick T, you read me very well, I love this and to the musicians and the vocalist I love it 🦷💞🥰🌷🐅
Chet is one of those rare ones in music (and perhaps elsewhere) that never gets annoying. Thanks for posting.
A great singer is he who sings our silences.

Another brilliant artist who blew it all. What a pity
Well, he didn´t blow it completely, did he? Made hundreds of great recordings that still livees. That´s something!
It would have been amazing to meet Chet.
not for him
Chet is beautiful
LOVE the great Enrico Pieranunzi's chords on the intro -- well, all the way through, just beautiful! A masterful pianist, who just accelerates Chet's great talent.
Enrico's great but the pianist in this video is Frank Strazzeri. I wholeheartedly agree with you otherwise. What a beautiful piece of work!
