an update on my health. rhabdomyolysis. Развлечения
100% with you Dan. I gave up a career as a helicopter pilot to have an actual life and get to take part in my kids growing up. Some people are baffled by that kind of move but none of them have lived a life away and missed out on so much that others take for granted. Life is short. Spend it wisely.t
Amen
Doesn't baffle me one bit. I pursued my dream of flying career too. At the end of the day i felt it was stealing my life away. I'm sure your decision was the best one.
Still wrenching on helicopters and fully understand this.
Hi Dan, I'm not a hiker nor a backpacker. I've watched your channel because I'm a dirt biker and do occasional moto camping weekends and I've picked up a lot of gear from watching your reviews; and I thank you for that. I love that you have compassion and a love for humanity (I've watched the Sawyer videos) and that you are a man of God. I wish you well and may you continue to be blessed and have good health. As for the struggle regarding travel vs. being at home, one thing I've learned over a 34 year career is I can make more money, but I can't make more time. As we get older, time becomes a more valuable commodity. Take care! 😀
I also do not backpack (anymore), but watch because I camp on my motorcycle
@@alsnyder1660 me too!!!! and I picked up a zen bivy 'cus of Dan!
Probably my favorite thing about your channel is how you unashamedly share your faith. Prayers for you dude. I know they work, and I'm glad to be a part of this community you've created.
Isn't it crazy how something like a major health scare can end up being a blessing? So glad for you being able to fully enjoy your family during this time of discovery.
Dan, I’m so impressed by how you’re choosing to be thankful in this season and you’re choosing to prioritize your family. I appreciate the content you’ve produced over the years and will be praying for your healing and wisdom for the future. I’d love to run into you in Oregon sometime!
Dan, glad to hear positivity in your voice! And just a reminder, “easy hikes” are still hikes!!🤘🏽
Thank you for sharing your message with us Dan B. We love you, remain positive.
100% with you Brother! Move in the direction you're being led. Prayers going up for you, your family and this channel.
Thanks for being so real, honest, and relatable. Continued prayers for your healing.
Health and family come first. Glad you intend to keep the channel going. Prayers for healing and no more pain.
Dan, Big Prayers to you. Learning to live with an aging body does suck, but keep at it. No surprise to me that you received so much support. You're content is on point and helpful. And you are a pure, honest, easy going, self deprecating, nice guy who - I know you don't think of it this way - are nice to allow us to hang out with you every couple weeks. Best travels!
Hey Dan, mad respect and only best for you, your family, and your knees. Thanks for all the content as it's been both entertaining and informative for this day hiker.
This is one of the most wholesome channels out there. Hope everything works out for you Dan.
Dan, I love watching your channel and I’m someone that has a busted up left knee from years of sports (arthritis, meniscectomy, micro fracture). I feel you on this - I’m so happy that you got clarity on what’s happening, and that you got to spend time with your family. There is a lot of joy in the outdoors and finding what works can sometimes be more entertaining than sticking with what’s been done. Keep on keeping on! I can’t wait to see what shenanigans you and Emmett get up to!
What a gift to be able to reprioritize and maintain your health. Glad you're on the mend.
I’ve been following you for quite a few years now. I have to tell you that I keep coming back not just because you have great, entertaining content but mostly because of you. I’ve always felt your pleasant spirit not often found in many channels. I’ve never met you but, to me, I consider you a friend. I’m a bit older than you at 64 and am dealing with knee arthritis, too. It can be discouraging but I’m not going to give up my passion until I flat cannot move any more. Hang in there and find ways to work around the pains! Love you Man!
You transcend beyond just a youtuber giving heart-felt advice. You're an extraordinary human being. Don't ever change my brother.
Good to see and hear that you have made plans for some more trips. I just want you to know how much your videos helped me (I’m 70) and my daughter start camping and have success. We started camping in 2020 and ,believe me , the learning curve was steep! Your videos guided us toward comfortable, and safe, sleep systems and tent choices and other equipment choices. Just last month our brave, bold, geared up selves packed up, flew to Iceland and camped for part of our trip around Ring Road. We could never have done it without your advice and guidance. So know you are valued and best wishes for future health.
Dan, you deserve every blessing. I will continue to pray for you. And simply again thank you for everything.
Thank you so much for just being so honest and raw. I'm thankful for your newfound motivations. I know the health stuff is tough but I know you'll continue to get better armed with knowledge and resources. Can't wait for your upcoming videos!
Hey Dan, preciate your video and the honesty. I too have decided to cut back on my weekly videos due to some new prospective I have from a lifelong friend who has just been given 1.5 years to live. It makes you realize and think hard about spending more time with your loved ones and making sure those relationships carry through from this world. Thanks for your honesty on your faith. Prayer is an amazing thing that can change the situation if it is in His will. Not necessarily on our time schedule though. But always on His. Heal up my friend and I will pray for you as well.
Yes - I will totally pray for you! And your family! Be well, Dan and thanks, as always, for all of your awesome and heartfelt content!
From our family to yours, we love you and your family as fellow believers. And appreciate your channel. Prayers and blessings
Great video and glad they have a plan ahead! I’ll continue praying! Blessed to have found this channel and that you’re not afraid to share your faith!
Hey Dan. Your perspectives always inspire… being both thought and action provoking. I heard you mention in a previous video that a good chunk of your subscribers have never actually gone out hiking. That was me. Wanted to do it, but needed to feel like I was equipped to do so. Your gear reviews helped a lot, but they didn’t hold a candle to you saying “just go out and do it”. You’ve got a supporter for as long as you choose to do this. Thanks from all of us who wouldn’t be out enjoying ourselves without you.
Thank you for the update on your health, the channel & future adventures. It sounds like the next chapter of your journey is more focused on what is important and thats family. You can do all things in moderation. I look forward to the upcoming videos. God bless & stay healthy 🙏🏻
Making family a priority is never a bad choice. Also, I appreciate your display of faith. Blessings to you Dan.
Thanks for the update! Im sticking around! Adapt and Conquer!
Thanks Dan for your message! Was asking for direction today in prayer and your message played a part. Keep it up!
The gift of time to reflect on what you do and how you do it is something I think we all need. I recently went through a similar time where I was able to not work for a few months, spend more time with my family, do some introspection and reevaluation. I've come out of that situation with renewed motivation, new goals in my life and a more centered and grounded perspective. I'm glad to see someone with such a broad audience share their experience and hope that it can motivate others to do the same. We all get caught up in the material and tend to forget what is truly important and rewarding in our lives. Wish you all the best in your health issues and will keep you in our prayers.
Love the openness and vulnerability you show! I pray your PT goes well and that the meniscus replacement gel shot really helps you. You just said OREGON!! I'll keep listening and hopefully hear when and where in Oregon you'll be. Happy healing.
You have helped so many of us. Take care of your body, your mind, and your family.
Thanks for the update. Pray you get to feeling better, pain sucks. Thanks for all your great videos. 🙏👍
Thanks for being real! Your content over time has been great but I watch because I can relate to you as a person. Love you sharing the faith. You got my support.
Lots of prayers for you buddy! Never give up. Never give in!
How refreshing buddy… thank you so much for being so forward and honest about your faith, I’ll remember you in my prayers, and getting older isn’t for the weak!!!
Thank you continuing to do these wonderful videos for us! All the Best!🙏
I'm glad you're continuing to make new content Dan! Sorry to hear about your ailments, but it is good to "know" what ails you. Slowing down can be a blessing and quality time with the fam is definitely a great benefit! Take care of yourself and God bless you and your family!
Some of the fun of these channels is seeing people's lives progress. Thanks for letting us in a bit and happy to hear you're in a good place. Keep it coming man!
God bless Dan, Enjoy your hikes with the knowledge of how to approach it without needless damage to yourself & Emmett. As always Be safe and hike on.
Dan, you don't have to do big epic trips to have an entertaining & informative channel. I've always enjoyed watching your videos. I have arthritis in one of my knees so I can sympathize with you! Keeping you in my prayers & looking forward to seeing what you get into next! 🙏😊🥾
We love you Dan! I just prayed for you and will continue to pray for you. I will watch you content no matter what. God is good and I'm glad you see His faithfulness is hard times, what a blessing!
You were the first channel I began watching about hiking and camping stuff - I subscribed to your channel because you are relatable and I stay for the same reason. Take care of yourself and I’ll be following and supporting from San Antonio!
Amen, keep at it and follow your heart. Thank you for all of your info and evaluations of gear. So helpful to plan my backpacking trips.
Dan, i share your knee arthritis difficulties and just 2 weeks ago came off the A.T. with a fracture. As devastating as that is, spending time with my family has helped. Keep the faith, praying for you.
So raw, so real. Sorry about the bad news Dan and family. Yes family. Your love of and dedication to family really came through in this video.
Bless you Dan. I live in Michigan and me and 2 of my buddies are going to The Manitou islands in a couple of weeks. It really means more. We've never been backpackers but your channel has given us the confidence to start a new tradition. So thank you. Unfortunately the ferry isn't running to North island because the water level is too low and they need to drudge the port. Like you, my family is #1 in my life, so I commend your decision and god bless buddy.
Hi Dan, I hope your recovery goes well and soon you and the team can go to some amazing trails , I really enjoy all the videos and appreciate all the wok, all the best to you, your family and Emmett ✌
Wishing you the best man, you helped me fall in love with hiking the outdoors. I started feeling like I knew what I was talking about and could help my Son and Daughter in Scouting be better at their journey! You're videos have been amazing! Wishing you the best going forward, God Bless!
Dan, hang in there. I had a painful time walking, but I could ride my bike no problem. Finally, at age sixty-seven, I got my knee replaced. Apparently, things have to get really bad before you can "qualify" for a knee replacement. But I have joined with absolutely EVERYBODY that I ever asked before I got the surgery to say, "I wish I'd done it years ago." So start talking to your doctors about it sooner rather than later. Maybe they'll do the surgery just to shut you up. That's okay. You'll be better off for it. I'm seventy-one now, and I can't tell you how nice it is to walk without pain; to get good sleep because there is no pain; to wake up and not have my knee already screaming at me; and most importantly, to NOT be in such agony that I unintentionally snap at people and say bad things to them. Yes, we are meant to have our tribulations, but, seriously! It's 2023. If it can be fixed, fix it.
This, Dan, this!
The thing is, a replacement knee doesn't last forever. It can wear out after only 10-15 years, especially in a young active person. And each subsequent replacement gets riskier and riskier. That's the big reason why doctors usually want to operate later rather than sooner.
The most important people in your life are those that live under your roof. Keep doing what you’re doing bro! Much love and respect brother!
Thank you for being real! And I'm praying for you.
Dan, thank you for these videos and your willingness to share openly. I'm a pastor in NH and an avid backpacker. I spend a lot of time all over the Whites. (I'd be happy to have you here sometime!) I also struggle with arthritis in my knees due to knee injuries from high school and college football. I'm almost 40, and I find dealing with my knees very discouraging. I love the opportunities I have to get out and backpack. While the pain is a pain, I am so thankful to have the ability to keep hiking, and I will continue to enjoy the outdoors and give my 3 boys the opportunity to learn along with me. I'll pray for you and the days ahead (physical therapy is no fun).
There is absolutely value in showing how to accommodate health issues in an outdoor oriented lifestyle! I have a bad knee too so following as you navigate has been both a comfort and lesson for me too:)
I wish you all the best, Dan. You have such great positive energy that if you just make feel good videos like you do, they will always be great.
Dan, I’m very thankful for this channel. Backpacking has always been my passion and you gave me the tools and provoked my thoughts when it comes to this activity. I thank you for that. My wife and I are now in Europe and we will absolutely pray for you.
All the best Dan! Really enjoy your channel and the info you provide!
Thanks for being open and honest. Looking forward to see how the channel grows and changes in the future.
I first ran across your channel looking for information on lightweight, insulated jackets and fleeces. I’ve camped a few times years ago and been to several national parks. I am not a hiker, yet really enjoy your videos on all the places you visit and the reviews of sleeping bags and whatnot. I injured my knee a couple of years ago and went through months of physical therapy, a minor surgery and was told I have a bit of arthritis. I have since returned to the gym after years of not going, and for the most part the knee is working well, albeit with random days when it hurts. Prayers to you! Keep up the great work. All the best to you and your family.
My prayers and thoughts are with you. I live in Oregon but used to live in Upper Michigan. Done the Picture Rocks Lake shore trail several times, including with boyscouts. Bring a bug net, cause sometimes the bugs are ferocious, especially around water. I am 66 and have had a knee replacement 2 years ago. Staying up on my PT was so important, and here I am hiking and backpacking, riding horses without pain, and feeling good. Love your videos, for the humor, the knowledge, your forthright way of being, and now because I know you're a man of God. Prayers for your recovery!
Just keep moving forward, Dan! Great channel. Thank you!
Hi Dan. Tina from Mobile, AL. Have been a fan for a short while, love your content. I am an overweight lady of 62, one knee done , another to go. I love the outdoors and have a son who takes me on short hikes all over the country when we can travel. I may never be a backpacker, but still love learning and have used your info about poles for when we went to NC in the mountains. God bless you and keep you sir! Carry on!
Really happy to hear you are doing ok and getting back out there!
God bless, Dan. Don’t worry about the future of the channel, you’ll do fine. I’m so glad to see that you’re being real about the situation and faking a facade while you face this. You’re in my prayers brother and I hope to meet up sometime!
Go Dan Go! Love your faith, attitude and approach to things. Happy Trails!!
Glad to hear you're on the mend, Dan. For your idea about giving out coordinates to your camp - what if you give the location out in a series of rhymes and riddles, so people have to decipher the location and then navigate to it. That would reduce the number of folks who ultimately end up at your campsite, and the folks who guessed wrong still got out and enjoyed nature in their own location. It would be like a treasure hunt - you could even give the clues out one by one within each new video you release leading up to the trip - might be a fun twist.
I absolutely love the combination of authenticity and positivity. Keep at it and I hope to see you on the trail some day. Take care of yourself.
Hey Dan. Thank you for your genuine and heartfelt video. I hope you get better.
As you are discovering, major health events can cause you to reevaluate your priorities. You seem to be handling this positively. You will look back in this as a pivotal point in your life years from now. Whatever you decide will be great for you and your family. You are a survivor and an inspiration.
Dude, love your mindset. There’s different seasons for different things.
Hi Dan, sorry to hear about your knees on top of the other issues . Praying for you.
Been watching your videos the lastvyear or so while recovering from a stroke working out what i can still do. The places you go and kit you get to test and report on has been great.
Hang in there, keep pushing, keep us as up to date as you feel able - He wont not hear your and others prayers. Jon
Dan, thank you. Very respectfully, thank you.
Bro, it's getting the returns for what you give to us! Heal up and get better, love your channel.
🙏 Good on you for finding the silver lining. I was just talking with my wife tonight about how much I missed with our oldest son and it haunts me to this day. So hard to balance "being there" with "daddy's gotta work." Prayers up for healing and clarity.
Never worry if you bring more value to the web... you do. I am always encouraged by your videos and will support you and your family in prayer. Be blessed!
God Bless you Dan from everyone here at Superior Gear!
Praying for you Dan! God bless!
I have to travel a lot for my work. Even though I love the work and the journey it takes me on with other people, I completely understand the family sacrifice. Love your stuff, Dan! Praying for you! I hope the Pictured Rocks trip goes smoothly!
Hello 👋 Dan, thank you for the update. The best to you for your continued recovery. Years from now, your Son will appreciate you being present during his youthful activities. Stay safe out there. 🤗
Thanks for posting the updates!! I find your content very inspiring and motivational, and I think you sharing all this just adds to that!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi Dan, I really appreciate you talking about your health journey. I was forced out of hiking and mountain biking with major inflammation and joint swelling with no diagnosis. Recently got diagnosed after 23 years and am on Humira for auto immune disease. My life is totally different. I'm riding my bike again, planning a backpacking trip for the first time in years, and feeling better. Also, I definitely will be praying for you. God can do anything. If you trust him, he will get you through whatever he lets you go through.
Dan, there is nothing more inspirational than you still getting out there and following your dreams and passion in spite of your health challenges. I know because I have lived the last 30 years of my life battling chronic illness, but I still get out there and go on adventures. My channel reflects all that. I know you will navigate all of that whatever you can share with us will be awesome.
I loved that you asked for prayers, Dan. Soak ‘em up! Looking forward to seeing Pictured Rocks. I’ve been waging a campaign to get my husband, committed day hiker, to make this our first camping and backpacking trip together. Sell it, man!
You inspire all of us. Have fun and enjoy the trail!
So sorry for the news about the arthritis. I am lifting your situation up in prayer.
I am very glad you are staying positive during adversity!
Dan it’s all good. Take care of yourself. I love your honest reviews, and insightful opinions. The camping is just a bonus. I’ll always watch you, even if you can’t backpack again. Relax and adjust to what you can do, we are still here.
Hey brother, really praying for you. I’m 63 and going through the same type of knee issues and I’m bound and determined to keep hiking. It’s my passion and I know you’ll continue to do the same. Love your channel keep rocking it and we’ll all keep watching it.❤
Praying...you are so inspirational !! Thank You for sharing your faith! May Gods BLESSINGS be always with you and Your family!
😊 Dan I am so glad to hear you're spending more time with your family and really enjoying it. It shows on your face in your video. Also looking forward to seeing that film of the Peninsula. I also believe in the power of prayer and I have prayed for you, keep up the good health and keep smiling! And enjoy your family as much as possible.
Love your candor and the fact that you don't have to apologize for taking an ultralight chair or robust pillow on a short backpacking trip. I'm a convert. Glad that you're on the road to recovery and adjusting to some of the realities of getting older (arthritis, etc.). You mentioned heading to Oregon soon. I'm recently transplanted from Chicago to the Portland area, so if your plans are taking you to the Mt Hood area, please reach out. My recent trip on the Sawtooth Wilderness Loop in Idaho was inspirational and educational.
Looking forward to your continued recovery and future adventures, good health my friend!
Dan..
I love your vids, regardless if your on trail or behind the desk. I was planning on retiring (early) this yr and training all of ‘23 for an “attempted” Thru-Hike of the AT in ‘24, but my wife was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in January. Everything changed, but that’s ok!
My son took me on a weekend hike this past weekend (his Father’s Day Gift) on the AT in GA. It was AWESOME, but we came home to the wife waiting for us! It’s God’s plan…And I’m happy! Let HIM blaze the trail for you. 🙏🏻
You are a class act, one we can relate to. You always come across as genuine and down to earth. Sorry for being tardy to the party but yes, prayers coming. I was under the weather for a couple weeks. Following my own doctors orders at the moment for the next few months. Your priorities are in the right order. I'd bet your family was happy to see you more. God's plan is always the right plan. We must take care of ourselves so we can best take care of our families. Thanks for being open with yourself and prayer for healing. Maybe our paths will cross in the future (trail or otherwise) or maybe not, either way, take care.
Keeping you and your family in prayer, thanks for sharing your story with us
God bless you Dan! Praying for your health!
Hey Dan, it's always hard to get a not-so-positive medical diagnosis. I'm happy you are going to readjust your trips and, also stoked you're continuing to test products out where they're intended to be used so, I'm with ya. Can't wait for the next video, let's go!!
Hey Dan, you and Sean Chandler have quickly become some of my favorite RUclipsrs because you are both so open about your faith and it is very encouraging to see two great RUclipsrs (who are very different in terms of main topics) using YT as a platform to share about their faith in a very positive way. Thank you for being a blessing in my life. Praying for you.
I totally get it. I was military for 22 years and missed so many things. Opened my eyes and I realized I was broken in so many ways and out of the loop. I use backpacking as an outlet but since I'm not traveling as much. I get to spend time with my kids and coach soccer. I entered a new life, that may be slower paced but definitely good for the hesrt.
As adults we have to embrace the new stage we enter into and be gentle with ourselves. Your illnesses as annoying and scary as they are, was your body and minds way of telling you to adjust a few things. Thanks for putting out great videos, bro !!!!
Love to hear that I am not alone in PT. Been dealing with major sciatic issues for the past few months, and a trigger finger (that is really starting to hurt) ortho appointment too. Since I am unable to hike, and taking care of my mom with Alzheimer’s in my home, I am getting things done with my body that have been giving me problems.
Great videos and pictures of your family … yes, it's the right time to care for and enjoy them !
