The latest version of my Roland TR-505 custom ROM project. Now uses a 512K EEPROM containing 4 kits, including the original stock sounds. Kit available here: hkadesign.org....
I know it says sold out, but do you happen to have ANY of the parts for this mod? The EPROM? I found a 505 at a Salvation Army for $25, and I REALLY want to do this mod. Sounds great.
yes he did!! idk if they are currently in stock, but try to email him, i did and he let me know when the mod was back in store, its great works like a charm!!
Maravilhoso e nostálgico. Esses sons fizeram parte de minha infância. Teria como fazer um Style Card TN-SC customizado com novos ritmos para o módulo Roland RA90 ? Parabéns pelo ótimo trabalho.
I've been A-B-ing the demo with my finished modded 505 and I think either your RIDE and CRASH are engaged on the rom swap or mine are totally different. Your DMX, LM-1& LinnDrum ride and crash sounds in the video are exactly like my 505 (and my 505 samples that I have), and also sound like exactly the same roms in the video. Also my LM-1 and LinnDrum RIDE and CRASH are the same samples post-mod on my machine (which I think makes sense).
Would these ROM work with a 626? If not, do you think you could do custom ROM for a TR-626? Would be wicked because of the single outs and pitch posibilities.
Thanks for your interest - the kit in its current state won't work in a 626 as that machine uses a different address map. I may look into developing a version for it in the future as several others have expressed interest as well, but I'd have to track down a 626 for development first.
Sorry for the mega late reply! It would be wicked and super nice from you if you would do this for a 626. Are you in Europe? I woud track down a cheap 626 somewhere, send it to you and when you finished the development you send me some ROMs in exchange. Great project!
cyclo bob I'm in the UK - I'd definitely be up for that if you can score a cheap one! I've been thinking about how to do the upgrade and it's certainly possible
Thats great man! I'll let you know when I have tracked down one. But I think this will be arround Jan/Feb 2017, because actually I'm typically Christmas broke : )
If you havent tracked down a 626 yet, PM me, I would exchange it for a few of the upraded ROM chips when you finished them. I read on your shop site that you will come up with a new batch of custom ROMs in August - will this be the ones for the 505?
Very interested in your offer - please send me an email (address is on the website). The 505 kits will be back around that time, hopefully along with the new kits for the 626.
What is the advantage over. importing LM1 samples into DAW vs having them in this mod TR505? Besides the obvious that it may be more fun to program on hardware. Do you benefit from the "lofi" outputs or why should I go for this? :)
Using samples in a daw, is harder depending on what kind of feel you're looking for. Like a simple kick on the one and 3, snare on 2&4, you'll spend hours pushing and pulling to get it to not sound wonky...but it works for unique styles..i guess.
@@kensmechanicalaffair well everything has pros and cons, but yes, timing def seems tighter with certain drum machines or samplers in some way. My MC505 is super tight
@@kensmechanicalaffair 😂😂 you should ssee it here, Indeed it does, my studio looks like the control center on the Millennium Falcon, only thing missing is Chewbacca roariing!
The mod replaces the 505's original sounds with a number of different sounds taken from classic early 80's drum machines. You could get more or less the same results by hooking up the 505 to a sampler and just firing off samples via MIDI I guess.
There's a 626-specific version of the kit. It uses mostly the same sounds but they can be individually tuned on the 626, and can use the individual outputs.
Wow, so great. I'm amazed someone finally managed to figure out the insane sample interleaving. Nice work! Do you plan on making any more runs of the kits soon? Also to add to the sacrilege, have you considered making eeproms with 707/808/909 samples on?Because surely that's what everyone REALLY wants when they get a 505.
new run coming in the new year. a 707 kit as well as a drumulator kit are on the horizon, I now have the original ROMs for them and will be converting them in my christmas break. I've looked into doing 808 / 909 kits but analogue samples never sound good dithered down to 8 bit @ 25kHz
Oh my! This expander and those tools just upgraded my old 505 from a shitty paperweight/triggerconverter for my Polysix into all kinds of awesome! Is there anyone out there doing custom kits? Perhaps some bitcrushed 808s? (I wouldn’t mind a stab a some grimey and harsh dithered sound)
Just ordered one! Have burned many an EPROM for arcade machines etc, but you deserve support for the great work and laying out how you did it on the website. Very much looking forward to fitting the upgrade and am sure to make a vid of it.
You don't need to be an expert in soldering by any means - the installation manual can be downloaded from the website (see description). I'll try and do a fitting video next time I have a clean 505 in.
Finally got round to installing my rom and it’s fantastic !! Super easy too. Love it . Thanks for making this .

I installed this in mine, works and sounds great
This is just brilliant.
If I sent you my 505 how much would you charge me to install the update?
im dying waiting for a restock T_T
yes he did!! idk if they are currently in stock, but try to email him, i did and he let me know when the mod was back in store, its great works like a charm!!
Those sounds are a VAST improvement on the originals! Nice work :)
I just pulled out my 505 and decided to look up something on youtube . this is dope.
this is great. i gotta get 505 for Linn Drum emulation
Just bought one.. Can't wait to install it. Great mod kit!

Drums of The Message at 3 minutes
When will the next batch be out? Just got a 505 today!
on his website it says the next batch will be available by the end of this year
Thanks for sharing all the files. What burner/programmer do you recommend for the 29C040?
Absolutely brilliant. I'm up for this mod!
What's that 9 pin port on the back for?
I don't have that TR-505 any more, but it connected to an external breakout box for individual outputs

Just found this video. Unfortunately the kits are sold out at the moment, but still.. Impressive work! 👍
AWESOME....🤗🤗🤗✨👍👍👍...PUNCHY AND MATURE SOUNDS !!💗💗....THE 80 S ARE HERE ....

Great work. Waiting forward TR-626 ROM to be available. Please let me know if it would be for sale in near future.
My question here is where did those new patterns come from?...If he programmed those himself well then great work
5mn ago I didnt know this kit existed, now it's on its way to my 505. Thanks!
"Juicy"
Just ordered mine!!!!!! Can’t wait !!! Cheers from México ❤️
first demo sounds like Pale Shelter (Tears For Fears) chrous haha
Added to cart, Thank you.
Hi, are these still available ? Is there a tutorial on installation? Thx
Installed the expansion board. Love my beloved 505 even more! Thanks Harry.
Genius - I need this for my 505 and thinking of getting the 626 now !!
Will this kit also work with the TR-626? If so, when will these be available? Thanks!
This kit won't, but I do plan on doing a 626 version some time this year though. No idea when exactly that will be.

I sended you a private massage via youtube.
you should do one for the 626 but with the LM-1, LinnDrum, DMX, and TR-505 sounds.
MUST HAVE! Amazing work on this for such a box o' tricks!
Great ! I would like to order this kit as well .
I will like to buy one, me too! But not more in stock!
You still making these?
Can we buy this? :O
When will it be available again?
Are the kits gonna be back in stock soon?
JUICY FRUIT
Great! How to get that mod?
man oh man do I wish I had this when I had a 505.

the sound engine in the 505 makes it perfect for lofi
When are you making more?
super cool you did this
This is amazing! can't wait to get a kit!
I'd love to do this to my 505! Would you accept a pre-order for your next run of kits? Thanks!
I don't do preorders in case I run into delays etc. but if you drop me an email (address is on the page), I'll let you know when they're back in.
Is it possible to create a CR-78 kit? (My personal favorite drum machine)
Would be up for a pre order
Can someone explain to me what exactly this mod does to alter the original? i.e. what am I hearing now that cant be done without the mod? Thanks!
The mod replaces the 505's original sounds with a number of different sounds taken from classic early 80's drum machines. You could get more or less the same results by hooking up the 505 to a sampler and just firing off samples via MIDI I guess.

Harry Axten I got one those samples on my mpc
It works also with the TR626??
Thx!!!

Would this work on a machine thats curcuit bent?
yes it would - I'd imagine it would sound great with clock mods, I have individual outputs fitted on mine which it works very nicely with
This works nicely with the clock/pitch mod! I'm sure data line bends would be fine too (I'm not a bender, just a modder)
can't wait!
cuando va a estar disponible ?
they'll be back in a week or two

can you do this on minor knowledge in soldering?..... a demonstration video on how to install this rom Expansion will be highly appreciated

Awesome! Can you mod it to have a few individual outs, say, BD and snare(s)?
