I did this in gym class took me 16 minutes! And my legs hurt for days

I love backwards running. I try to do 2-3 times a week
KneesOverToes RUclips channel kinda did this whole concept years ago for training the ligaments to remove knee pain. There are exercise for shoulders, hips, and vertical leaps.

I found I could run backwards for longer, faster, and easier than forwards way back in highschool. Everyone laughed at me though so I stopped... god why are classmates so cruel.

It is not as hard as many think.
I am 76 with a bunch of health issues and run backward for decades as part of daily exercise, not a mile, of course. Notice that the left and right sideward run and on one lag run are a part of regular routine, and I'm likely the fastest man older 70.
And I get ridiculed for just walking backwards on the treadmill at the gym!
