I did this 4 times to make it work. I have no idea what I did wrong the first times, but I'm so glad I finally nailed it. Thank you so much for your work, Devlin! I really appreciate all your content and how you present it, in such simple terms and thorough explanations, all while having an encouraging tone.
Third video down and I am LOVING these!I just have to stop it a lot and replay parts to trouble shoot as I go. I would do the bootcamp if I could afford it but I cannot for now. Thankful for these!
I love these type of videos and the step by step process as I’m a complete newbie. I’m waiting for my new laptop to be delivered before downloading my Articulate trial. Once I do that I’m definitely going to watch this video and following step by step to practice these techniques. Thank you!
Great! I have a couple more of these to upload as well. A good computer will definitely make working with Storyline easier 😃. Good luck with your Storyline journey!
Thanks so much for your work, Devlin! I've been following all your advice and as I'm on a 4 week study break with a lot of time on my hands, this has meant a bit of coding, graphic design, and these Storyline workshops. It feels like a lot and sometimes I get worried that I am spreading myself too thin, but I'm having a great time and I'm enjoying having you as my mentor. Trusting the process. I didn't realise how much I would love coding especially!
You’re welcome, Ruby! It sounds like you’re doing some serious upskilling, and I’m glad that you’ve been enjoying the Storyline workshops 😃. Keep up the great work and feel free to join us in the community to share what you create. www.devlinpeck.com/id
Thanks for this video, Devlin! I have developed the entire avatar selector exactly as you explained it and it works perfectly. For some reason though, when I preview it and go from the main slide to the next slide, there's a very brief flash of Lily that appears right before the other character appears. It's super brief but definitely noticeable. I'm stuck.
You’re very welcome! And are you using a slide transition by any chance? That will not execute the triggers until the transition completes. Another option is to make the character hidden by default and then change to the character stats based on the variable when the timeline starts.
@@DevlinPeckYT thanks! I don't have any slide transitions, but I will try hiding the character and using variables to make it visible. Fingers crossed! :)
I just did this one, around 50:37 when he created the new states he just added a new character on top of the other one, i right clicked on the character and clicked "replace pose" you can replace the character instead of having 2 characters on top of each other
When changing the character in the wheel, if you double click the character, then select "character" from the toolbar, you can automatically change the characters while keeping sizing, spacing, etc without fiddling around with copies- it's much faster and more efficient.
No problem! Your technique is still great to know for switching characters imported from external sources. Good to have lots of tools in the toolbox. 👍
Did anyone else notice how on the final test when we first select Andrew (not the normal state of Lily), the Intro Slide has to switch from Lily for a split second (54:22-54:24)? My home test had the same result. Do we know why this is? I thought it might be trigger order but can't seem to find the culprit.

I really love your all videos ..sorry But I am unable to find this sequence of this video ie no 4 ,where you might have discussed on variables and conditions.
Hi Sandeep! Thanks for commenting. I will double check the order of the playlist, but keep in mind that these are not designed to be sequential learning. Since people vote on what we build each session, some sessions are more complex and some are simpler. We do cover variables and conditions in many of these, though. I'd suggest trying to recreate what I do step-by-step, and soon enough you will have a solid understanding of how to apply these skills to new projects :)
It would be cool to see how to publish and post some of these projects. It looks like the files need to be unzipped and then placed on webpage server. Can they be embedded in other delivery systems?
I've done a character select screen using image states and a dial interaction, it's a little smoother than this I think, but it depends on how many avatars you include. I tried including 100 just to test and it worked well enough, but the backend triggers can stack up if you're trying to identify each avatar.
@@jjustjess I'd be happy to make a tutorial on how to do it. It's not that difficult once you figure out the logic. The tricky part with my setup was tracking name, team and avatar selection on the same screen. Sounds easy but you have to build in trigger variables for the three different selection orders a user might make. I should probably start making some videos like Devlin to help people.
Thank you for these tutorials. They are so helpful. I have a question on this one. If you go around 54 mins on this video, when you preview the project ... when you select Andrew, Lily flashes up for a fraction of a second before Andrew appears. The same happens on my version. I wondered if you have a way to stop this from happening as it looks a bit messy for those with an eye for small detail... Thanks so much!

If I'm using this as a character selection for a scenario-based learning, would it be better to keep each character as a state throughout my slides, or link their selection button to its own "scene" in the storyline and just make a scene for each character? I feel like the latter would dramatically increase my file size, but would make future editing simpler. 🤔
Very nice. Thanks for it. I will experiment to see if I can also attach a certain specific voice for each specific characters. I suppose creating different audiofiles and invoking them with the IF function in the variable trigger, similarly to the character selection? Another nice things would be to be able to have two independent carousels in the same slide (one to select a male character and another to select a female one, then used all along the course), but I don't think this is possible with layers as one cannot predict in which position there two will be in each carousel at the same time. I built the whole thing (with variables mentorSelectFemale and mentorSelectMale but then realized it would not work, so plan B is to separate the selections in a consecutive flow - different consecutive slides cause a transparent shield that blocks the other gender would work to prevent the second selection until the first is done, but then one would need more layers with all the permutations of character 1 selected, and the three character 2. A little too much.). Wonder if anyone has solutions for two carousels in one slide.
I solved using two sliders, instead of carousels via layers. Each position in the two sliders generate a different character variable. Simpler and it did the trick. Thanks for all the other tips! Really useful.
This video is great! I was curious, if you want to insert text to speech...is there an efficient way assign a female or male voice based on the avatar selection?
Thanks so much! And you could generate both the male and female audio, then you could use two triggers to play the audio when the timeline starts (each trigger has a condition to only play the audio if the variable is equal to the correct avatar's name)
@@DevlinPeckYT thanks for the response! I created a male voice and female voice, and both play when the male character is selected. I set up 2 trigger commands- stop audio “Lily Voice” when the state of Character 1 is “Andrew”. I also have - play audio “Male Voice” when the character state of Character 1 is Andrew.
@@coachkc2565 Oh, I see. You say it plays both voices. Can you share the slide w/ us in the Slack community? I'm sure we can take a look and figure it out: www.devlinpeck.com/id

Hmmm...perhaps you need to add triggers to hide the other layers when one layer is shown? Or you can change the layer properties to hide other layers when that layer is active
