hahahha I'm proud of you too! Such a funny term "boxing" but I guess it make sense since it's making a box of sorts :-). So cool that your wife is a seamstress, I'd love to see her work.
I love the way you are sitting inside the bunk sewing. A great table setting thanks for the tip. This will help on my projects. I just finished doing a complete outside covering for my leopard cockpit. This helps a lot and gives you a new room .
Thank you so much Mike! Congrats on your outside cover, I’m very impressed and would love to make one for ours. I’ve never done something that challenging with the glass, did you document your process by chance?
Ive been watching your videos for a while and I can say you are amazing.. the personal battles and victories as well as your endless talents makes you a special soul..
What a perfect comment to end the day, thank you so much James! I can't tell you how much that means to me, but I can say that it's comments like these that make me excited and inspired to keep on sharing. So grateful you're along for the adventure!
I’m so happy I found this video. We just purchased a L39 and I’m super eager to do all my own upholstery work. You guys are such an inspiration & my favorite RUclipsrs.
Thank you so much Mark! I know, I wish you could have one too, it really is next level. Should have mentioned it our cat vs. mono discussion ;-)! Thanks for the note!
I wish I could do this. I really need to re-cover our cushions, and I have a sewing machine, but I've only ever done throw pillows. I might watch your video a few more times and try to muster the courage to give it a shot. Thank you, and wishing you all the best, especially with Dorian.
Thank you for the wishes Karen, it will be a rough night for sure but I'm grateful we're safe. You can do it! Start small, find a small cushion or piece of foam to practice on. One of the toughest parts to master are the corners, but if you go slow and do the little clips, anchoring your needle down as you lift the foot and make the turn, you'll get the hang of it. Let me know if you have any questions!
you should do a video on basic needlework - what needles, thread to buy, fabrics - how to start . I don't know anything on this subject and it seems kind of useful to know.
Beautiful material and colour!! I use the wonder clips to secure my top plate and do the markings as well in the corners! It’s so nice to stand back and admire your work and how much money you have save!! Great job
Thank you so much Sandra! Smart clips - never heard of them, thanks for the tip I'll check them out. It really is such a good feeling to stand back (and sit back) and admire your work. And all the money we save, it's amazing! So cool to hear from you, thank you!
Hello. Thank you for showing how you made them. They really look great. In the beginning of the video Nick mentions that you added a few inches to the depth and it made a big difference in comfort. What is the new depth?
Thanks for answering my question I posted in one of your other videos and for providing this link. Your cushions look amazing and you make it look so easy!! If you don't mind, I have another couple of questions. Why do you use batting over the foam? How many cans of the spray adhesive did you use? Last one (for now LOL), did you use new foam in the back cushions and if so, did you change the angle or thickness? I REALLY appreciate your time. If I get up the courage to tackle the cushions, it will be a big job for this novice!
You’re welcome! Batting fills in the edges where the seams are and adds a little more softness as well as aesthetics. I think we had 2 cans of glue. Kept old foam in the back cushions because they were still comfortable. YOU CAN DO IT! Start with a small cushion.
Great video, Megan! Are you also considering upgrading the bench at the helm? I bet you could make it much more comfortable for passages. I'm glad you and Nick made the decision to get out of the way of Dorian. I think Sugar also approves. It was good seeing you guys on the live chat. -Darin
theguccipilot thank you so much Darin and yes I agree Sugar is happy! She was rolling in the grass today totally blissed out. Good question on the helm seat, it really could be more comfortable. I think it needs some 5 inch foam for sure!! Thanks for joining the live chat that was fun but kind of scary!! Thanks for Sugar treats 😘
Love that you converted your 4th stateroom into a sewing room and were able to bring your love of sewing on the high seas! Will you offer your services to other cruisers?
Thank you for making this video! I only know how to “sew” with hot glue. We just got our first boat and it is in dire need of new cushions. I love y’all’s channel and will have to check out your podcast too.
Thank you! I’m excited to finish the backs and get some fun fabric for throw pillows. We’re all doing great and heading back to Clarity in the next day or two.
Hi Megan. Was a great job! I wish I can do this. I'm thinking about start to sew, I just know the basics but I need more than that to make thinks easier on the boat. Can you give me some tips how to start it? I would like to know which sewing machines do you have? I saw you 2 different machines, I believe one is for thick materials, is it? Thank you to share your knowledge and information. Be safe ;)
Thank you Rubia, it's great to hear from you! I have a Sailrite LSZ-1 that I've had for 18 years - it's awesome. The other one is a used Baby Lock Anna that I got for $70 from a sewing repair place and I use it for making clothing. I recommend the Sailrite for any upholstery or boat projects.
@@meganokelly Thanks a lot for your answer and help! I'll keep watching you guys and your projects, I'm learning a lot with you. Thank you and good winds ;)
Hello Lilian from Holland, how wonderful to hear from you! Thank you so much for the huge compliment about my videos, I sure do love making them and setting them free in the world!
We are just about to start on making new cushions for our boat so I came back to watch your video again as we really like the makeover you guys have done in the saloon. Hope you don't mind but have a quick question.....Currently the front edge of our cushions end at the vertical of the base and I want to extend them out so there is an overhang using ply similar to your setup. What did you find was suitable for the length of the base (minus the thickness of the back cushion)?
Alan Duffy how exciting! The foam hangs over about an inch from the marine grade plywood. Good luck and feel free to ask any other questions. Hope that helps!
Thanks Kenneth! Yes, wood goes inside the cushion because our settees don't have a separate wood cover which means the the cushion acts as the cover. It's efficient and means we only have to lift the cushion to get to the storage below.
Hi! I’m getting ready to sew some marine vinyl on a couple of long cushions for my son’s 2 man sailboat. Do you think my 15 yr old singer sewing machine (nondigital with 40 stitches) will do the job or do I need an industrial one ?
No I bought it from the company Sailrite.com and I think I paid $900 - 19 years ago. It’s the LSZ-1 and I’m not sure what they go for now, maybe around the same amount.
Thanks for the reply!!! I know I’m kind of late watching you videos, but I just recently discovered them and love your videos!! You guys are so educational and that’s what we need!! We’re about 2 years away from being cruisers. We’re currently full time RV’ers and loving that. Keep up the great videos! By the way, I subscribed to Megan’s RUclips vlog!! 😁😁
Hope you guys are doing well during this crazy time! I'm getting ready to purchase a machine. I'm sure you've talked about it, but what's your favorite sewing machine for doing mostly art sewing projects, clothes and potentially sails if the need arises! :-) So, no need for ultra heavy duty but would love to have the option a few times a year if needed. I see you have a Sailrite and a Singer. Thank you!!
Hi Victoria! We are hanging in there just fine and hope you are too. For clothing/artsy projects I have a Baby Lock Anna which I got second hand at a repair place in Wilmington for $69. The Singer broke so I needed something for clothing and I'm quite pleased with the Baby Lock. Especially the price! Good luck and sorry for the delay, hope this helps.
Why put the zipper is the foam washable or something. I'm thinking to sewing it all up with a colored edge since it will be sewed outward. It is my first attempt
I loved this video! More sewing vids, please!! But it was slightly confusing to follow along... at the start I wasn't quite sure where the zip was going, or whether there were multiple zips on each cushion. I thought I had missed out the first part of the video! I only understood how it came together at the very end. Maybe more clear plan to describe the pattern for the cushion you were making. Maybe a diagram!? The information I got from the 'how to' was mostly about material choice, fitting and that you should add a zip! But love your channel!! Subscribed!
My wife is also a seamstress, so I understood most of the terms you used here, like Boxing. I am so proud of myself! :)
hahahha I'm proud of you too! Such a funny term "boxing" but I guess it make sense since it's making a box of sorts :-). So cool that your wife is a seamstress, I'd love to see her work.

Great work on those cushions. I need to do this for our boat and will check out the material on Sailrite.

I would do a test with the right heavy duty needle and thread, go through 4 layers. Old Singers are amazing so it could work! Good luck!
Hey Megan--would you do a vid on cockpit enclosure?
No we didn’t have one just side shades
Was your Sailrite sewing machine included in the sale of your boat? If not, where did you get it and about what was the cost of it?
