This was so awesome. I was born at what was then called, Elmhurst General Hospital in 1958. I have lived in and around this area most of my life, up until 1997. This area was predominantly Jewish, Italian and Irish in the 60's. I have fond memories of it than, but find it more fascinating now. When this video was shot I had already been gone(Virginia) 20 years 8 months, so imagine how crazy it was to see the Pic-A-Shoe, McDonald's and VIM, in the same spot on Junction Blvd. As I post this, I'm going through some emotional stuff right now, but you have no idea how this walking tour of my childhood home has helped me. Thank you so very ,very much.
I moved to New York recently and chose to live in Queens not only because of the rich culture but because it reminds me so much of my hometown of Boston. It’s like a blend between the suburbs and the city.
Born and raised in Jackson Heights/Elmhurst . Brings back memories but I no longer live in NY . Lots have changed there! Thanks for touring the neighborhood!
I grew up in this area in the 60's & 70's. Roosevelt Ave & 79 st. Boy has it changed! Different cultures. Brought back so many memories. Thanks for sharing.
Super long story short i moved from nyc (whole life till 22) to oregon 5 years ago. DIdn't bother me at first but between covid and etc havent been able to go back as much as wanted. These videos make me feel so much better , I grew up around QCM (back before there were 3.5 of them lmao) thanks alot.
Used to live at 92nd St and 35th Ave. so this brings back many memories of my old neighborhood. I felt like I was the one walking there. Thanks and keep up the great videos!
I thought the camera was on your head or some such. I see from your shadow that you have a stick. That is partly why these videos are so good. Well done it can't be easy. Thanks
One of my fav youtube vids. Thanks bro, you reconnected me to my old neighborhoods. Makes me wanna go back to high school days. Excellent quality. BEST part about it is that you let the sound run realtime and keep with the feel of the city (instead of shitty music). Thanks again mate
1:24:00 Corona AV. and Junction Blvd, I was told Corona AV. was an old Indian trail, the Indian village was where Corona Park is now, across from the Lemon Ice King. Originally Corona AV. was called Dutch Lane, Junction Blvd was called Junction AV. and went towards a threshing mill that was up near where LaGuardia airport is now, only 125 years ago Newtown was a farming village still very rural, only around 2,000 people lived in the entire village in 1890.
Wow! Noticeably cleaner here. What is the difference? Yes, I'm going back to watch old videos because I only recently discovered how much fun it was to watch someone film a walk in NY.
Good walk mate,i am Australian and it gave me a great look around, sad to see so many shops closed down its very much the same here in Oz i think its a global thing,no jobs and no money, thanks again.....
Jackson heights my old stomping grounds worked out of Elmhurst hospital love my Fri Sat at the Strip and Sundays going to church and having brunch watching all the honies
When the camera turns right, @29:13 , by the bus stop... That's where they would sell bootleg movies, on VHS... And right before Junction intersects with Roosevelt Ave, this Spanish guy would be yelling " Tempo ! Tempo ! El enemigo de las cucarachas ! " every weekend...
That's a magnificent video. Hope everyone could make walking videos from their own locals. It would be so nice! I want make a stable walking video in my neighborhood but I only have a GoPro with a grip. Your video is very stand still! do you use some source of humble to stabilize image? Thank you.
I am so glad I came across this video! This is the neighbored I grew up in in elmhurst, in the 50's, moved to Ozone Park in 1958. You can see the tower of Newtown high School at 1:15, that i attended. I lived right down 92nd st. from Corona avenue. What a treasure to come across!!! I will be showing this to my children and grandchildren. At that time the area was mainly Irish, German, and Italian. What a great video for my children to have!!!
Oh WOW! Finally a video on an area I recognize. This was my stumping ground decades ago. In my early twenties. Haven’t been back there in soooooo long. Nothing has changed, apparently. But I’m sure things are different there now than when I lived there. Everything is different all over the USA. I mean. Is it just me, but I think there was warmth on earth back then, not the razor sharp coldness of people today. people were friendly back then, not edgy, eager to start a new day, knowing that prosperity awaited for them outside their living room. Chaos, shootings, lootings, and mayhem await for those of this generation. I’m so sorry about that.
this was most informative - thinking of buying a CO-OP in the Historic District of Jackson Heights- everything seems so quiet - is it because it's so cold out? Thanks again . . . .
Gale Hysler Usually it's not nearly this quiet. When I filmed this the weather was extremely cold. In warmer weather you'll find many more people walking about.
Good video... huge fan of all the music... From Run DMC, Ll Cool J, MC Shan, Roxanne, Nas, Mobb Deep, Royal Flush, CNN, Beatnuts and so on and so on... do me a vid of the Bridge if you can...
Wow, looks so quiet. I live in Maine so I know quiet (originally from a city in England) but what a contrast compared to manhattan. I should try the other side of the East River next time I go to New York. Thanks for these vids!
7 Train in New York City is a Oriental Express Train. Passengers in 7 Train are mostly Minority people like Chinese, Korean, Asian Indian and Hispanic people.
Yes, both. I’ve had my iPhone stolen in SoHo, Manhattan. People can be random sometimes. I get crude gestures, the “finger”, turning away from the camera, private security telling me I’m not allowed to film, and people playing “chicken” with me to name a few.
Statistically speaking, NYC is pretty safe. (Just avoid the Bronx.) Just exercise common sense: don't walk around flaunting money or uber-fancy/expensive stuff, put your phone away when you're walking (or just don't look at it) and try to avoid being alone in a secluded spot, especially at night.
I will be moving to woodside or elmhurst in a few months. Queens residents, do u think elmhurst is safe for a white guy lol. I never see any others when im there. This doesnt bother me but i dont want to stand out in an unsafe area.

I will give you a hint at around 1:21:00 you are approaching a gas station on Corona AV. and 94th street, when I was a kid there was a hill behind that gas station, we would go up there once in awhile but they would chase us off because they said it was an Indian burial mound, after I came back from the Army they built a house on it. No respect for anything, really a shame.

My favorite borough. Love NY, but Queens is by far the most diverse and liveable. Parts of it reminds me of Philly.
