- Earlier this month, iconic hip-hop producer DJ Premier stopped by Genius HQ for the second installment of Genius Level with Genius' Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman. During the in-depth conversation, DJ Premier explained the process behind the making of Nas‘ 1994 classic “N.Y. State of Mind.” The track is featured on Nas’ debut album 'Illmatic,' and captured the dark, gritty nature of street life in New York from the perspective of a Queensbridge native.

when you actually read the words of tracks off illmatic on paper it's even deeper ,you say to yourself like how he come up with that, cause he lived it he wrote what he saw and lived it straight lyrical genius .
I always have that feeling, like, it's pure genius and realness writng a song like that. I'm italian and I'm trynna understand all the lyrics day by day and the rhymes that Nas put together are absolutely astonishing. The story with the MAC-10 is so fucking real
