My theory about this song is that the main character is a scientist researching antimatter.
Now here's why I think that:
There's a scientific theory out there explaining why there's so few antimatter out there compared to normal matter. As antimatter is the exact opposite of matter, at the very beginning of the universe, however it begun, there should have been the exact same amount of matter and antimatter. But today, that's not what scientists are seeing, there's mostly matter here and only a very small amount of antimatter, which makes sense, because when matter and antimatter come in contact, they annihilate each other. So if there was the same amount of both in our universe, we would most likely not be here to think about this.
So, where did all the antimatter go? Well, what if instead of only one universe, two actually got created? One with mostly matter, the other one with mostly antimatter. This would be our mirror universe. That is as far as the scientific theory goes.
And depending on how exactly the universe has begun (if the matter and antimatter universe had the exact same influences and mirroring particles), it might be an almost exact copy of our universe. So think of it as a mirroring, dark parallel dimension. What if the scientist managed to create a portal between those worlds? And what happens when an antimatter human (or any other thing made of antimatter) touches a human made of matter?
Human implosions.
(Yes, it's actually an explosion, but please, just let me have this)

_- this hints a little more at something spiritual or in the Eldritch direction_
_- however, there have been myths about parallel worlds for many centuries_
