On "My Car Story" we're at the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis WI on 2-22-24 at the World of Wheels car show.
We're looking at a 1974 American Motors AMC Matador DL in White Paint. The car is equipped with a 360 CI V8 engine, with an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Kyle Bingen. Kyle’s had this car since 2022. Kyle shares he had one in High School and he decided he wanted a car like the one he had in High School. It took him awhile to find it, however this one is really clean and a great car with “Grandma’s interior”.

AMC though "out moneyed" continued to punch above their weight to the end. Today these AMC orphans are Soo COOL to see and learn about.
Kudos to a gorgeous car!!!
Hi Wayne, Happy to read you think this car is "Soo COOL" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
When you are the “underdog”, you can afford to take risks. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. Just look at the previous model Matador.
Lou, I spotted this in the background in one of your recent videos. Glad you featured it! My mother had one. It was a very nice car.
And, I assure you, even in smogged-out 1974 ALL AMC V8's were very strong runners.
Audie, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Mothers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I cant remember the last time Ive seen one of those, super cool man
Happy to read this one is "super cool" :-)
Simply a beautiful car American motors wasn’t always on my screen as a teenager, but I don’t ever remember seeing one without the front bumper look
Hi James, I agree, I can't recall seeing one without the front bumper, but it looks pretty cool. Lou
I liked this feature,. i went to help a friend buy a 1974 Matador back in 2002 from original owner, he backed out and i bought it. Still have it.
Hi Jon, Happy to read your Friend has one too :-) Nice. Lou
I think it looks great without the front bumper too, and you're right it definitely gives it AMX vibes. I love the interior as well, and certainly what's under the hood. What a great car! Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you appreciate the design of the front of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this "great car!" with you. You're welcome, Lou

Very cool Matador! I like how AMC swung for the fences in the 1970s- no half measures!
Thanks for reminding us of this classic Lou!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you think this car is "Very cool" :-) My pleasure jogging our memories on this car. You're welcome, Lou
That car is so nice. It smells of 1980's. My nostalgia kicked in hard.
NICE!
Can’t recall ever seeing this car. And I thought I’d seen it all.
I gotta agree with you 100%. I’m sure I seen a few DL’s but I never seen one without the front bumper.
Hi Scott, I'll share one more with you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/JP6NKTcVLBs/видео.html
That was just a simple modification that Matador owners would do, simply be removing the factory front bumper for looks. I still remember seeing a black
Matador in the 70's with BOTH bumpers removed.
In '74 I was having some work done on my '69 Ambassador so the dealer let me use a new '74 Matador until mine was fixed. I sure liked the Matador. It was a copper color with matching interior.
Hi Daniel, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your dealer loaner car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

You’re right, cars do get better looking with age. I never thought I would consider a Matador as sharp, but this one is. Very nice! Love AMC.
Happy to share this "sharp" looking car with you :-)
So THAT'S a Matador ! That was the original ad tag line ! Thanks for posting Lou !
Hi Rudy, Thank you for sharing and you're welcome, Lou
Beautiful!!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Beautiful '74 AMC Matador! 17 year-old me just had to see it in person, so I drove to the local dealer, and although a bit shocked with the design at first, I was happy to see fresh styling from AMC. The vehicle in the showroom was the Oleg Cassini edition - black on black, and the carpet and buttons on the button-tufted seats were copper-colored. It blew my mind that AMC actually brought this cool design to market. And Lou, I agree, the front of this car looks great with the bumper removed. It does remind me of the Chrysler Turbine car.
Hi Mike, Great story :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Here is that Turbine, Lou ruclips.net/video/uh1Kt14Bido/видео.html
Nice old car Lou and very rare Thanks.

High praise.
Thanks, Lou. I appreciate all your content but especially like AMC cars.
You're welcome Anthony C. Glad you're along for the ride.
That is one sweet Matador and what a comfy/luxury interior.
High praise.
Thanks again for the variety on your channel, Lou. White I have never found the vinyl roof on those Matador Coupes to be appealing and am never a fan of odd tire combinations, this is a nice car even without the front bumper. Call me a purist - amateurs should never screw up what was original. At least this example has things that can be "corrected" to bring it back to original so this doesn't send me off into orbit with anger. Thankfully this guy saved it from a point of no return amateur fubar. Your efforts are always appreciated, Lou!
Hi ultraviolet tp, Happy to mix up the cars on the Channel to keep things interesting. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Wow Lou, what a great find. I would definitely spend time looking this over if I saw it at a show. Love the rare ones.

I never liked the look of the Matador until this one was revealed. The body stripe compliments it well and the bumper delete is just fine. Plus the wheels. Thanks, Lou, for giving the man the time of day.

Thanks for showing this beautiful car guys. Back in the 1970s i thought the matador was the ugliest car ever made. Now you don't see them anymore and I wish i had one now . Thanks guys , what a great car to show off.

"It's a Matador"! Or, so went the TV add of the day 📺
Good to see one again.
Happy to find one to share with you :-)
The old TV show ADAM 12 plays on the old TV channel. The character Martin Milner played bought one of these. They were uncommon then and you rarely(never) see one today.

When this amazing coupe came out, our parish, St. Mark's Catholic Church, in Stratford, Connecticut raffled one off at the annual bazaar. It was bright red with white stripes and matching upholstery. It was stunning! My Dad and I spent one long, hot Saturday night selling raffle tickets (at 25 cent$ each!) in front of Town Fair, the local department store/flea market. We were allowed to keep the Matador for the entire weekend, and enjoyed ever minute of it! Congrats on your new DL! 👍
Hi Greg, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the car at your church raffle :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
This sure brings back memories. My 1st car back in high school was a '74 Matador - orange with black interior and a 304 engine. It looked almost exactly like the one shown in the James Bond movie, "The Man With The Golden Gun". Coincidentally, a girl I worked with at the time had an AMC Hornet which resembled the one from the same movie!

Glad you featured this car, saw it next to the Ford in the last video. I've always been a fan of the Matador Coupe. The D/L is a Unicorn. Great one Lou thanks.
Hi David, Happy to share this one with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
Adam-12 producers caught hell because Pete Malloy had one of these and told Reed that, "the mechanic has more miles on it than i have".
AMC was a sponsor of the show...lol
this is a beautiful piece of art.

Great survivor condirion Matador. Another car that's grown on me, thumbs up, very cool.

That’s a sharp looking car. That was my first thought on the front end that resembles the Chrysler Turbine car.

This is certainly a rare car, I think you are right as time has gone on this style matador has gained a lot of appreciation for the styling as most all the cars look so similar now. Really unique on the woodgrain background instruments, I don't think any other car has that. Great piece of AMC history as well as the styling from Richard Teague, great part of the story on its return to its birth area. Its really amazing how many unique great cars AMC produced, as they certainly never had the R & D budget like GM, Ford, or Chrysler. Great car to share on the channel !
Hi Pavel 517, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I had a beautiful 76 Matador Coupe with the 360 4 bbl. It was from Nevada and only had 53K original miles on it. A tourist hit it and wrecked the front fender, hood and hood hinge so I parked it at a friend's empty lot while I was looking for the parts to fix it. There were a few other cars in that lot that were getting scrapped and when I wasn't there they showed up and the guy from the scrap yard was drunk and backed into the Matador and decided to just take it as well. He was using a logging clam truck to haul the cars and grabbed it by the roof with the clam to load it up and that totalled it.

sweet ride rare nice Lou
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this "sweet ride" :-) Lou
My first car was a '74 Matador sedan. My grandfather's car from new in early 74, it was handed down to me after he passed. Had every option AMC would stuff into one that year including the largest engine option (401cid) It drank gas like they were fixing to quit making it but it had the ride quality of the big Caddies and Oldsmobiles of the era so was a nice driver on a road trip. My teenage driving ultimately resulted in the destruction of its 'AccuTrac' limited slip rear end and sadly my dad sent it to the scrap yard.

I remember the TV Ads for the Matador. Various people seeing the car and saying, “So that’s a Matador!?”
Happy to read this car brings back memories of TV ads you remember.
I always loved that version of the AMC Matador. I remember them as being called the Cassini Matador. I think that they still made the squared-off bodystyle Matador. It looks like it might share the same core support under the hood between the 2 Matadors. This one would be even cooler if it had a 401 under the hood.
The styling of this car looks like the front end might have been carried over on the Pacer. I think the Pacer was AMC's biggest mistake, virtually killing the company. All they were left with, besides the Pace, was variations of the AMC Hornet ending with the Eagle.
Because AMC had made so many detrimental mistakes, they were left with excess factory capacity, so Chrysler stepped in and had AMC build their Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare models.
I have clicked on a thumbs-up for you. Thank you for another great video!
Hi Automated Electronics, Thanks for viewing and sharing. Here is a Matador I think you'll enjoy. You're welcome, Lou ruclips.net/video/JP6NKTcVLBs/видео.html
1970s AMC styling was the most out there stuff I have seen in my lifetime, other than that Tesla truck. Love it or hate it, gotta appreciate it.
Hi Mr Repurpose, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
@@loucostabile lou, you find and show us amazing cars. History matters.
Mark me down as another viewer who appreciates the absence of the front bumper, that's a big improvement. Also, Lou, good observation that the front of the car resembles the Chrysler Turbine car. I've been thinking the same thing for years.
Hi JayNaySayer, Happy to read you prefer the "Bumper delete" look :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
My favorite AMC, The DL was strictly for NASCAR to improve air dynamics. This is the first time I like one these. AMC contracted with Roger Penske with Mark Donahue. They work with AMC chief designer Dick Teague to develop the body. Unfortunately Mark Donahue was killed in a racing accident and never drove the Matador in a race. First driver was Gary Bittenhousen and the Bobby Allison. Bobby did win some races with the Matador. Unfortunately it wasn’t a big seller in the show room. In the 4 years of production they made 280000 cars. I purchased one when I was senior in high school. $3200. I currently have four of these. The original new one two parts cars and a 1978 Matador Barcelona that I’m restoring. That’s for showing the Matador.
Hi Steve, Hope your restored car comes out the way you like it :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

I remember this car and liked the aerodynamics. Never saw a D/L model though. As good looking as some of the 1950’s concept cars.
"As good looking as some of the 1950’s concept cars" High praise.
That Matador looks so nice with out it's front bumper. It just needs some rectangular driving lights put in the bumper cutouts and it would be what AMC should have done back then. Even a 1970 Camaro split bumper look. Beautiful car !!
Hi Jim, Happy to read you like the "bumper delete" Matador :-) Lou
Nice 😊
Hi Michael, Happy to read you enjoy this "Nice" car :-) Lou
.I bought this exact model, except for the exterior being a light tan color, as a used car back in 1977, paying $1800. The motor ran great, but it had rust issues (even around the rear light bezels), water leaked from the windshield, and the gas tank needed a new gauge. The best feature though was the interior with the luxurious door panels, and esp. the front seats that folded all the way to the rear seats. allowing you to lie back and see the night sky through the large rear glass. The car looked better when I added Goodyear Polyglas (GT?) tires with the raised white lettering.
I saw American Motors cars everywhere in the 70's, except for the Ambassador models.

I remember when these came out and I thought they were pretty weird looking. They are still pretty weird, but the shape isn't as bad as I recall. AMC went out of their way to produce oddball cars.

It is a shame that American Motors was destroyed, it was a good company with very loyal workers. Whatever the reasons, the big three eventually won out effectively ending the competition that AMC offered to the public. In my humble opinion they were forced out in part by our own government and collusion of the big three. They were even working on an electric car back then, Innovation was there, but the support for AMC was NOT.
Hi 55points, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
If you might recall Chrysler also almost died. The reason it died was more because of competition from Japan than anything else
