    For those who can't play ocasional tenths, there are ways of rolling 1-5-10, or in early jazz you can just use simple stride/swing bass with notes 1&5 on beat one, then a higher triad or fatter chord (occasionally) on beat two, and in any convenient inversion of course.

    To my ear, this technique reminds me of some spices... just a touch is enough. To play these could get very boring very quickly. That's the fascinating thing about keyboard playing... the combinations that "work" seem infinite IF you know how and when to use them properly. I can poke around for hours and produce, to my ear, beautiful sounds... not songs, for sure... just beautiful sounds. Some days that's just fine with me.

      @Impromptu naturally pivot on the fifth... but the preceding note is the root on finger 5. I'd like to see it. There's a lot of denial around re the advantages having a wide span. If you're only making an octave you almost certainly cannot retain position on the G with finger 2 and made the E with finger 1.

    • @markdenton8027
      @markdenton8027 4 года назад

      @Impromptu sure.. very informative. and thank you .. .but you must admit the overhead in time is significant to achieve the same result.

      When I was young my piano teacher had me do hand stretches to train my hands to reach an octave ( I can actually go one note over an octave now) they hurt really bad at the time, just like lifting weights it stretches,tears muscles to rebuild better. I'm soooo glad I went through the hand stretching training though because I love toggling octaves:-)
