Excellent, absolutely excellent video. Special Thanks for saying "Masonry Blade on a Skilsaw" ( circular saw). A joy to use with the right wind. That said, I've made your design including the two riser blocks ( so a total of 7 instead of 5 ). Oct. 2022 I put out a total under $30 including the under $5 blade and an 8th block in case I messed up cutting the first block. Didn't mess up. EZ, I cut the 8th one anyway for a backup fire chamber and just because I was really enjoyed cutting that concrete so easily. Bonus Points to you for the often left out can air intake. You are AWESOME! ( and I know this is 6 years later, but still great!) Thanks You!

@Billthewelder55 you're such a sweet person, you've made the stove and the video and you thank me! Some people are really angels but they don't know it yet. You're one of them.
My first post was six months ago, when my life was still bearable. Now I've lost my husband and I'm trying to remind myself what I used to do, how I was planning to make a stove capable of melting aluminium and glass. Sodium glass, low melting point.
But now I can only dream about that life as it will never be realised as I'm unable to do the most basics things without my husband being here with me more than half of me has already gone with him.
We don't realise when our husbands are with us how blessed we are.
Id give 10 years of my life for 1 day with my husband . Id give my all remaining years for just one day with my husband.
But God doesn't trade in lives. So I've been praying for some kind of help, anything, doesn't matter how small and God says no.
If I run away, I'll be able to build a stove like this so I won't need to eat raw roadkill.
      You've helped so many people!
God bless and enjoy every second you have together.
We were so in love , married for 40 years and one day it all had collapsed.
Look after yourself, I worry about these cement blocks exploding without a warning. Don't want to nag.
      All my love. ❤️🙏❤️

      @E-Kat 3 года назад

I'm so sorry for telling you all this. I must've felt at the lowest point at that time. Sometimes I feel a bit better and manage to watch some videos and even ask some questions.
And God must've directed me to you as you're such a wonderful, down to earth person.
Thank you so much for adding me to your prayers but I really don't want to add to your already busy life. Just one little prayer from you will be worth a lot to God. He might listen to you and send my guardian angels to help me.
Thank you again, your message has brighten my day!
Bless you and I'll say a prayer for you too, to thank God for putting you on my path. ❤️🙏❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏

I'm 71and lived, as a youth, without modern conveniences. The only recommendation that I can suggest is using nonshiny paper to start the fires. Like regular newspapers. The shiny have chemicals in them. Newspapers usually use soy print.

Well done! Just an fyi for you. Cinder blocks are known for cracking in higher heat. They cos a bit more but, you can get red or fire bricks shaped like standard building bricks and build the same thing by staggering the way you stack them. Then you won't need to worry about them breaking and you will get years of use out of them. I also recommend cast iron pots. Never the less, well done. Shows what you can do with a little effort.

Instead of a stove grill on the top, you can use any (metal) spacer; we used coat hanger wires on our version, and the tiny gap turned out to be enough to keep the chimney draft going, but made better use of the heat since not as much would bypass the pot. Another BSA related improvement: "skirt" the pot with tinfoil that drapes the outside of the pot, extending below the top of the block; leave a gap in the foil for gasses to escape. This really increases the heat transfer by heating the sides of the pot as well as the bottom. It took a lot less fuel. I like the tin can combustion air "duct"!! Another thought: use a wok ring (doesn't everyone have one of these?!!) instead of buying a grill.

I see many comments warning against the use of concrete against high-heat applications. I won't add to them even though they are all true. My suggestion to you would be to use fire brick. They aren't very expensive and would remove any worries of explosions. Concrete explodes like a bomb when subjected to high heat, and a prolonged fire could do it.

Cinder block concrete is usually too porous to build up pressure. I think it is called spalling when you put a lot of heat in concrete and a chunk explodes out. Like if you pour molten metal on it. But that is usually poured wet kind of concrete that is pretty compact.

We are playing with rocket designs using some old 'single' cinder-blocks (just a cube with one square hole), eventually hope to convert our wood stoves to Rocket/Mass heaters to heat the mud brick house in the winter. As we play, we learn.
Ours have a longer riser - four to six blocks tall and thus run much hotter. The bottom block cracks! The Pyrometer says that it was ~160C on the outside and around 380C inside, so no surprise. Repaired it with clay 'slip' and baling wire... We'll see how that works when it has cured.

I have watched many tutorials about rocket stoves, and many people waste a lot of time getting it started. Your technique is the most common sense approach that I've seen! Something you might try is dryer lint, which is mostly cotton, and can be kept in a zip lock bag. A cheap effective startup fuel is 91 to 94 percent isopropyl alcohol. Try spray painting your cinder blocks with high temperature Krylon paint to prevent cracking from high temperatures and prevent water absorption of rain. You can put a layer of tin foil on your pots to keep the soot off, or put your pot inside an aluminum pan, and this can be reused. Great video, looking forward to more!
