    Very interesting project, thanks for sharing. With reference to having them on cars. Most States ban them from use on moving vehicles, but they are totally okay for lighting at car shows where one might want to shed some light on the engine, interior, or under chassis.
    There is one application that is not illegal and I adopted before LED's and do it in my truck and car today, but with LED's. I began in 1970 by putting a blue semi running light under the outside front corners of my car seat by removing one seat bolt and securing a home made bracket, with the light attached, with the seat bolt. I ran (only one needed) a wire from the passenger side light to the drivers side light ant then to the fuse block and connected it to the dash dimmer lights fuse. My car (67 Galaxy) had a black interior and blue exterior so I used blue running lights. They dimmed with the dimmer, and lit up the floor board softly, both the back and front, while not obstructing the drivers view or distracting other drivers. This is great at night when you drop something on the floor while driving; it is easier to spot it on the lighted floor.
    The LED's work better for cars with power seats because of the clearance available, but you still have to move the seats around to guarantee clearance. Because they generate virtually no heat, they can just lay on the carpet with a simple zip tie to secure them.

    Great video. My advice is if you use plexiglass in order to eliminate the led exposure and have a more even illumination Frost the edges you can do that by sanding that’s if you have access to plexi rather than the cutting board ofcource.

    I'm a newbie..
    I'm confused on how you put the leds on the out side of the speaker, and how the cutting boards attaches to the leds
    correct me if I'm wrong , you cut the leds out, and mount the cutting board using two way tape to the leds..and use two way tape to mount to speakers

    great video I work at a boat store and this gives me some ideas i can run by my boss how ever you made an error 5050 refers to each led not how many are in a foot/meter 5050 is the size of the led its self there 5mm by 5mm you want to look for how many per meter such as 30/m 60/m or 144/m are the common densities. you can find 30/m and 60/m at 5m lengths but rare to find 144 at anything other then 1 meter

    I noticed you have the detachable tower speakers. Do your light rings just stay on when you mount them or is there someway to instal these lights using the controller to turn them on and off??

    Jay, thanks for the how to, just picked up some of these for our Mastercraft, Do the wires just route through the enclosure and out the top, is there any effect on sound quality by adding the rings?

  • @live4545
    @live4545 9 лет назад +1

    jay , did you sand the outter part of the ring after you cut it out ? what did you use to cut it out? and did you face the LEDS and glue them in or what ?

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  9 лет назад

      live4545 I used a router table on these with a guide bit. No I did not sand them, but you could if you had some burs.

    Great video... I see the cutting board is about 3/8” thick, and your ring is the diameter of the speaker. But how wide is the ring? I’m having trouble getting the light to shine through the ring... maybe I made it too wide ( aprox 1”) your install pics on the boat the rings seem so bright.

    • @_AlexSalome_

      We just finished with our LED speaker ring install. They look fantastic. Your video was great inspiration. The Rockford speakers have LEDs in the center of cone so if we want can change the ring color and speaker independently. Kids love it... so do I! FYI I used clear silicone to glue the strips to the rings. Arizona heat tape may have failed. Really makes the speaker set up look high end...well they are... nots it’s ‘ultra’ high end!!

      So what size did you end to cutting the ring thickness for the rings to show thru nicely. I know the leds are 1/2 inch wide.

  • @live4545
    @live4545 9 лет назад

    Did you glue the leds to the inside face of the ring ? I like that they are a solid beam ! Such a cool idea . I got (8) 6.5 " that I'm gonna do .

    Hi Jay, I was curious about the mounts you used for your speakers. Everything I have seen only have the bar mounts and not the flush mounts. I appreciate the help.

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  9 лет назад

      Tina Carnley You just take off the bar mounts and then use the flat part

      Tina Carnley BTW, just a note, I just happen to be at Walmart and looked at some cutting boards and the had a nice assortment of translucent ones. I purchased some small ones for $1.88 ea. I can get a 6.5" ring out of each one. Saved a couple bucks.

    how do you face leds inside the ring? and how did you secure them to plastic ring? with the backing tape?

    • @FriscoBoatersGarage
      @FriscoBoatersGarage  8 лет назад

      +gsxrkiller05 I just used simple white electrical tape to hold them on.
