Ignore This BAD Advice | 10 Common Style Misbeliefs for Shorter Men

- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2024
- If you search the Internet for style advice for short men, you'll find at least one article from every popular fashion-related website…and about 150+ articles from The Modest Man.
Most of these non-TMM articles contain a lot of the same old tips that you've heard a million times before: “Wear vertical stripes” and “Don't wear light colors” and “Wear shoes with thick soles.”
Here's the thing: a lot of this advice isn't actually true. Most of these “rules” can be bent, many can be broken, and some should be ignored entirely. Here are 10 common misconceptions about dressing the shorter body type.

I’m 5’5 and I don’t care if I look short on any clothes I wear as long as it fits me properly and looks good on me.. Nice video Brock very informative.. God bless!
At 5’ 9” average height I still gain a lot of advice from your channel so keep up the amazing work Brock.
Modern Life I don’t know I hear conflicting stories they say 59 is average height I don’t know 5’7-5’9 seems normal to me.
5'9" is average, right in the middle
It depends on the country. So the Netherlands is 6ft for example. Indonesia is 5'2". U.S is 5'9.5" and the UK is 9'9.75"
www.averageheight.co/average-male-height-by-country that's where I got everything in case you're interested.
As a 5'11 guy I'm below average height in my country, it all depends on where you live. 5'9 would be considered short.
I'm 6 foot 250lbs and I watch every one of Brock's videos.
Great style advice for shorter guys (and everyone else) on his channel.
I wouldn't restrict yourself to Brock's videos. His sense of style is, well, modest. His outfits are ok, and believes that you should not wear a V neck regardless of how shalloe the neckline.
And Fat Guys
Bruh you are tall
i'm 5'7 and 16 but your channel makes me feel more comfortable about my style and who i am
Hi, how tall are you now?
Good grief. The advice for short people is ridiculous. Like saying being short is bad. If you're short, you're short. I don't think clothes can change that. Just wear nice things that fit well. If people have a problem with you being short, then it's their problem. Great to see someone dispell all that nonsense.
Ofcourse being short is bad. But yes clothing won't change it. Just except it
This video is probably the most underrated fashion advice video ever. All the advice are so true, I yelled "AMEN" after every point
You’re so right about people talking us shorter guys & the guys writing the articles aren’t. Great video Brock! Also, I prefer the modest fam.
I live in Korea, and I think a lot of short Korean men make themselves look shorter by wearing pants that are cropped too short. It's been the style here for a long time (since I moved here 7 years ago) - slim fit pants, hemmed well above the shoe about an inch or more even. It's so common that I have to be very firm with my alterations folks, "yes, I really do want them to be that long and to just touch the top of my shoe".
Anyway, the problem is that skinny pants often are low-rise waists. Combine that with the physical genetic structure of Korean men where they have relatively long torsos and relatively shorter legs. So the cropped pants, IMO, just exaggerates those features and it just looks off.
All that is to say that, after seeing that day after day here, I became sort of averse to rolling/cuffing my pants. I'm glad I saw this video because now I feel a little more confident to start rolling up again.
I enjoy this return back to some of your "shorter man" focused content. While there is only so much you can say on the topic, things like hauls specifically are something that I enjoy.
I hear ya! Trying to keep the shorter man in mind, even if some of the videos stray toward general fashion advice.
Thank you for this video I thought it was great advice. I'm 43 years old and in my teens, 20's and 30's there were no support like this for shorter guys which made being a short guy extremly difficult ESPECIALLY trying to find dates with women. The "Tall Dark and Handsome" slogan in the 80s has ruled and shadowed over short men for decades while brain washing women to think taller is better.
Kudos to you, Brock!
Awesome summary, great video.
No extending bla bla and no dubious “sponsors “.
You helped me to upgrade my style to the point where I get compliments all the time! Thank you!
Glad to hear that, my friend!
As a 6’3” man I find a lot of great information in these videos, even though there is quite a bit tailored for shorter people.
What makes all these styles classics is the fact that they work on any body type. Wear what you feel comfortable in. Thanks for the video.
Blimey, I've been watching this channel the past few days for the watch advice and didn't know the origin of the channel/website. I'm 5' 3" and this channel seems to give very good advice for all men of different sizes - nice job ! 👍
The only thing that matters is proportions and proper colour combination, and that goes for anyone, doesn't matter if you're 6'3" or 5'4". What you wear doesn't matter, it's all about proper proportions and a great fit. I can make a 6'0 guy look short and stocky easily, just put him in an oversized shirt and pants that are too baggy and long. However, the tall guy will probably have a little more room to not get everything perfect and still look good. For example, bad colour combinations that cut your body in half is very bad for a short guy and, although still bad for a tall guy, it's not as bad.
Also, what works surprisingly well for me when clothes are a little too big is I soak them in hot water and then put them in the dryer for an hour. Do it once or twice and you have a shrunk shirt that fits perfectly. Of course, the shirt has to start just a little big. But it works really well honestly. I'm 5'7" and I love the uniqlo oxford shirts in XS. But they are a little big and I put them through ~2 cycles and they get shorter and lose all the baggyness. Fits perfectly and much better than having to tailor them since you keep the proportions of the item. I even do it with my chinos.
Good video Brock. :)
I’m 5’3 and double cuffing my pants have made my jeans and Chinos look so much better on me
The color video web school was one of the best lessons yet.
I am not a short guy but you nailed it properly with some sound arguments.
Your advice is so logical, it's shocking. Thanks!
Great videos sir Brock. I am one of your avid fans. Please continue on helping us by giving useful advice based on facts and just plain being true. More power and keep up the good work.
Proportion, proportion.proportion. Also what suits your hair and complexion. Solid advice in this.
The old adage that bigger guys needs more full cut, regular fit clothing holds much more true than the modern advice that everyone should wear slim fit clothes. Glad you brought that up.
Thank you for making me feel that my height wont limit my style options. Cheers to more content like this one!
hello im just 5'5 and im thankful that i discovered this channel for the amazing outfit tips👌
I tried the elevator shoes one time for a short while and to be honest, you do get used to it after a few wears but also as long as the added height isn't too drastic, it is pretty subtle and not noticeable. An extra 1" - 1 1/2" is enough to make a big change, if only for the wearer and the way they see themselves as opposed to making other people recognize that you got taller. It's almost in the same vein as wearing thick soled boots, but for a more dressy or business-like environment.
Great video again Brock! There is so much crap out there, that I think it is one of the reasons why many short men just don't bother with style.
Agreed!
I’m 6’1” but I love watching all your vids
we really love you, and truly appreciate 👏👏👏your hardwork and dedication. Keep doing this good stuff bro and you're gonna reach great HEIGHTS.👍👍👍
We have exactly the same measurements and you look classy af. You get my sub 👍
Appreciate it!
i'm 5'6" in shoes too. Glad to find this channel. I leaned a lot!:)
👊🏼
#10 is an interesting perspective. First person I've heard speak against that. Great tips. Some I already follow. Thanks
Brock you’re awesome - great advice on men’s styling - without silly hype! / and I’m loving that you’re “below average” height too (I’m 5’ 8” - on a good day!) - so added value that you cover relevant content for that too!
Came across your vids from Australia - Thanks heaps mate - subscribed!
I’m 5’8” and have a pretty strong athletic build. I usually wear larges to fit the top but often they’re all too long for me. Last year I had to wear XL’s for most stuff when I stopped running that season, that wasn’t a good look for me. Might have to find a tailor because shirts hanging over my bottom doesn’t do me any favors
Your advice is always on point Brock!
God, the struggles I have with buying a button shirt. It’s either too tight because it’s the small size or too long because it is medium. Like many say these days, I am a SHMedium. #thestruggles
What works surprisingly well for me when clothes are a little too big is I soak them in hot water and then put them in the dryer for an hour. majch ill have to give that a try!! I have a few large outfits so I’ll give it a go. Thanks ✌🏼🤙🏼
EscobarStyle hope it works out. Let me know if you remember :)
majch I’ll remember. I will do laundry tomorrow 😁
sooooo did it work?
Amazing!!! You look like freakin' James Bond in some of the outfits. You r a beacon of hope for us, vertically challanged dudes. Keep up the awesome work.
👊🏼
Great video!!. I'm just learning and greatly appreciate your teachings.! Thanks Brok...!
hey, brock, found your channel through RMRS and Gentleman's Gazette. you have really great content. it strengthens my passion towards double breasted jacket and you gave some good insight on how to look dapper for being the same height as you. keep up the good work!!!~~~
Really helpful tips here👍
Lotsa good info.
Great video I will share with my friends!
I'm not even a guy (am short tho) but I love your videos! Love from the Philippines!
Great video and suggestions, Brock! 👍
well said. fit is definitely king but for me function and comfort as well. thanks
Good advice there, thanks. The polo fits you well, but I think the pocket is too low, maybe this is why "wear accessories higher up" keep getting recycled.
LOL ! some of these advices were borderline offensive to me as short guy. By the way, it seems that I just dicovered my dream youtube channel. A new subscriber here
great video!
Great Video. Thank you for posting.
Serious and important question: do you prefer #tmmfam or #modestfam for an audience hashtag?? Let me know. Also, if you're not following along on Instagram, get on that! instagram.com/modestmanstyle/

And yes, I'm following you on Insta!
Loving your content man.
Just subbed, I’m 5’11 and awesome channel!
You are my fashion hero!
good video Brock! i agree with most of the points you mentioned.
but i really think elevator shoes are questionable. i am short and i'd rather be short than add some fake height to 'fool' ppl into thinking i am taller than i really am.
also the pic you put up 4:48 - yes i get the contrast point, but at the same time i have to say that black and dark blue doesn't look good tgt. ppl argue about this point, but i'd rather wear two dark blues or a dark grey and a dark blue than a black and dark blue combination.
cheers mate!
I love your channel im 5 11 pretty average however your advices work just fine for me!
Glad to hear that!
When I would go out drinking with friends, sooner or later the topic of height would come up, most of my friends are between 5’10 and 6’11’. When asked how tall I was by the girls, usually girls were asking, I would say I am 6’4”. Then I would get up and go to the restroom.
Now I am 5’4”. When I would return to the table they would always look confused. I ended up dating a girl who was 6’4” and we had great fun together until she relocated for a new job.
best video on the topic ever, good job ;)
The hero we need
Another great video from you!
I'm a giant and watch your channel.
I can relate to this video lol awesome video I love it!!!
The best advice anyone can get it look into a full body size mirror and judge yourself for who you are. If you like how you look then that's great and if you don't and change it.
The last advice is so stupid and Hilarious at the same time, anyway I’m 5ft6 too, Glad I found your channel. Nice content!
I feel you. I'm 5.8 130 lbs and have a lot of problem to find clothes that fit. XS in any shop are made for GQ model, meaning, 5.10 and more, and build line an athlete.... It's frustrating. Uniqlo is a big miracle for me. I can actually find some piece that fit well.....but otherwise, it's a challenge
Damn...as always, another great TMM video! Your content never ceases to be useful and relevant. In regards to stlye misbelief #9 (short sleeve shirts), I have actually seen that short, skinny men should never wear long sleeve henleys as a single layer. What do you think about this? To me it doesn't make that much sense, but I also have never found a henley that actually fits well on my short, skinny build, so I can't test it out.
I think it’s tough to find one that fits, especially in the sleeves. But if it fits well, it looks great as a single layer (especially if you’re muscular).
That's what I thought (obviously if it fits) which made the advice I found seem even more suspect.
Thanks for this video!!
Awesome video!!!
I see Josh Hutcherson on the thumbnail I click. 😍😍😍 even though I won't use the tips on the video. 🤣🤣
Hey man for shorter guys what do you think of stacked jeans? I personally like the look of it when they are skinny tapered.
Not a fan personally, but if you like them, wear them!
Great advice! True!
Great video💯👊
👊🏼
super info..thanks
I come from the future and this man has only improved his style more and more
I feel weirdo with 170cm height another tips for me i dont always wear stripe or a word saying on the garments i choose plain colours
Have you tried on the J.Crew untucked shirts. I'm just curious what your input on those for the length and fit.
Is that a specific line from J. Crew, like Untuckit? Or are you referring to their casual button ups, in general?
it's a specific line for the casual button downs www.jcrew.com/c/mens_special_sizes/untucked
I have a problem, which jeans should I wear? the slim fit or straight fit? i have a broader body built but short. my height is 5'1".
I'd go with slim fit or "athletic" fit (which means it will have room in the seat/thighs and taper from the knee down).
Great pic of Elijah wood at 2:42. Also if you style your hair like Brock you get like 2 extra inches!
great vid! i vote #modestfam, i like how it rhymes with "modest man" :D
This video help me a lot..
The Modest Man ROCKS! \m/ >_< \m/
Where can I find your Colour 101 webinar? I'm very interested.

You point out a truism within the men’s fashion industry, most “advise “ in GQ, Esquire, etc. is dead wrong or based upon opinions from people who have little or no clue what they are talking about.
great video brother
Thank you 👊🏼
im digging your sass!
Looking fit Brock!
Nice watch
Instead of elevator shoes, I wear custom made orthotics in my boots , that seems to add a half inch to my height and they feel great
You are the best out here
Haha do you leave this same comment on every video??
Your my hero!! ❤❤
U should be more famous man!!! U r gud..
Thanks man 🙏
Hey Barack.. question for you... how do you cuff your jeans when you have altered the length keeping the original hem as you suggested in one of your previous video (finding the tailor).. on an altered pair, when you try to cuff the jeans, the back side of alteration shows up!
The seam should be clean if they know what they’re doing. But you can roll them twice to hide the seam of the original cuff.
ok thanks, rolling it twice makes the jeans too short though
Can you do a video for fat balding guys like myself...please :(
Thank you🙏🙏
Actually, that wasn't bad advice! I'm 6'1", 170 and so have never had what seems to be a "short issue". The fact is that men who are short and lean can look really great and are easy to dress. I see executive applicants at my company and do not find a good correlation between height and impressive presentation. But clothing must flatter the man's body and enhance his appearance. When I interview someone I want to be paying close attention to the man and what he says and not be distracted by garish, ill-fitting, or otherwise inappropriate clothing (or accessories). Height is no barrier to good taste and good taste is timeless.
Like everyone else, I will turn to Esquire and GQ these days when I need advice on how to feel ashamed and guilty for being a man in general. Not when I need advice on how to look good as a short one.
Basically just wearing minimalistic and tapered clothes
Shorter men should study at your feet, Brock. You can clarify lots of misconceptions.
You got a sub😊
hey brock what's your favorite mtm shirt company?
Blank Label and TailorStore are both up there.
Is for modern era 5.10 short?
Are you wearing the same outfit in the video at 7:20?
I'm actually wearing a polo in the video and a button up shirt in that photo. Very similar color, though.
