I am a member of the S.B.L academy, and i viewed this course. It was a huge eye opener for me as to how simple it is to set up the bass yourself. I highly recommend this to all! Im so confident with adjusting the settings on my basses now, I feel like just taking it apart and putting it back together for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Thank you Scott !!
Thanks for that lesson....it's just what I was looking for as my neck on my F bass seems to have bent out of shape a little due to climatic changes. My D & G strings buzz from the Bb on the G string up to the D...same place for the D string, therefore I'll tighten up my truss rod a little hoping that that will solve the problem I have with the buzzing... Cheers!!
"It's only made for tension, not to adjust the action" I know this information was from almost a decade ago, but isn't the tension from the truss rod also crucial, in addition to the bridge, to prevent that insufferable buzzing noise when going for lower action? Because I know there's a certain point in which you can only do so many adjustments on the bridge before issues with lower action ring out such as octave temperament and the aforementioned buzzing, ergo the truss rod needs to be adjusted to counteract it. Right?
Hi Scott My 6'string has two truss rods so I don't dare to do it myself as of now, would love to know how. I love this instrument and can't make myself to experiment on her without really knowing what i'm doing. I probably could work it out with enough research. She's both expensive and very important to me so it's probably not a good idea to experiment on her without proper research. Do you or any other guitar tech maybe on this thread know of any good content explaining the best way to adjust a 6'string bass with two truss rods? Thanks for the lessons, loving it :)
It all depends to how the neck reacts to the tuning, adjusting the truss rod is not always mandatory, if the action is ok for you and the neck remains acceptable straight then you shouldn't do anything. Otherwise if the neck relief is noticeable to the point that it affects you then you have to adjust the rod. Every neck will react differently to a mixture of tunings and string gauges.
Hi Scott.. building a Sixstring Neck-Thru Bass-Beastie with double truss rods..(DIY-Pack) , courtesy to my friends at Valkyrie Guitars Holland , EU... Any tips how to handle that if the factory got it wrong..?? As always.. Thanks for everything.. my students are very happy I recommend your vids to them.. And.. : saves me a lot of repetition on lessons .. ;) What i do keep telling them is.. : practice, practice, and .. when you're done, study (rest your hand) , and then go practice some more.. Oh.. and recently picked up fretless bass playing..(custom defretted Blade 4 Livingston Bass.. ) and me like a lot!!
+Paul Kittredge Most of the great musicians that I know are not bassially prejudiced in any way. You must be getting information from the wrong people.
+Paul Kittredge most guitarist just view bass as very easy, because they think it's just their guitar scales, I know this because I'm a guitarist and thought the same but then I got more experienced in guitar, and learned differently haha.
Can the way the neck us set up mute a string? because I have a six string jazz and the E sounds really muffled compared to the rest I've been told it needs a neck adjustment but I'm thinking it could be something else
+James Sakimae check the string height, nut height and maybe ur pickups-to-string distance? can really be one fret higher than others and ur E is lower than other strings? u need to get someone too see it. @_@
Ok, this is something that nobody ever seems to discuss and I cannot find anywhere......Fender vintage truss rod adjustment or more specifically, the use of the host body vs a surrogate body during adjustments. My recently acquired, pre-CBS '61 Jazz has no adjustment routing slot cut into the body, at the truss rod position under the pick guard. This does not allow me to engage the truss rod for adjustment, (though I see where there was a small attempt before). Therefore, I must either route the 61 body to reach the slots (yea, that's gonna happen) or the neck requires removal and reset on a surrogate body that has the routing present in order to adjust the neck......Does this mean that the bass neck will have to be restrung on the surrogate body for adjustment? My tech told me that not all Vintage Fender JB's are like that and that he would have warned me of this if he knew I was shopping.....Does that also mean my hard earned was wasted on a vintage 'Lemon"? And if this is also true, why is this the case....what was Fender thinking?
Very disappointing and over information on something not needed. I wanted to see him make ACTUAL TRUSS ROD ADJUSTMENTS on at least the two types of Fender Jazz Bass. First the one that adjusts at the end of the neck toward the bridge. The other truss rod adjustment up top of the neck...He did neither. Most unfortunate. Wasted my time.

This is the greatest truss rod video, I saw a lot before, but this one explain it perfectly, no need to view more.
Great video. I think most players understand the basics of truss rods, but to have it explained in depth was really interesting.

Amazing video, essential to understanding how our instruments work and what to look for when selecting one. Thank you for posting this!
thank you for the knowledge gentlemen.
This guy is really informative and engaging. I hope we see more of him Scott!

I believe so yeah
This isn't just bass-ic information here...I can totally truss what you're saying.
Great video….wonder why there aren’t more graphite necks out there. Too costly?
Thank you very much
Thanks for checkin' the video!
Excellent information
Thank you Thank you
Thanks! Do you plan on releasing a lesson on action height adjustment?
That was great! But I did get flashbacks to Open University on BBC2 during the early hours in the '70's! :-)!
Great vid with great info!

Høgni Poulsen contact the manufacturer of your instrument. Somebody there should be able to help you
My band tunes to Drop B i use a five string. I keep the low be in standard
Then tune everything up to F#-B-E etc what should I do with my truss rod?

thanks for that..🦊
Are truss rods righty tighty lefty loosey??
Yes, is indeed what I use to do with my fender and musicman when is needed
is there anywhere i can get a proper guide on maitainance of a lead electric guitar?
*puts hand up* Guilty, Guitar player here
Lol... it's ok man... guitar players are welcome too ;)
Same here
why do most people hate bassists? just from personal experience everyone I know think bass is easy.

I want to build a custom guitar for myself, where could I buy a pre-fabbed truss rod?
I'm a guitar player, not a bass player haha. I wish I had the time to pick up bass and get good at it.
Scott: Guitar players are welcome
Davie: THAT’S ILLEGAL
WHO IS THAT AT THE END??? Shazam isn't finding it and that bass playing is silky smooth
Well, here I thought I might learn about intonation related to the truss rod. Rats.
Matthew Widder ... from my experience, adjust the rod with new strings, wait for the neck to stabilize, set string height and then do intonation.
Don’t you just turn the little screws on the bridge till your note hits the pitch?? It’s really simple sharp you turn right flat you turn left
Good of course, but a crucial component I feel is missing: capo, tapping above frets etc, clearance across range....
I swear I saw another video where the guy (different channel) said the opposite. You tighten to create relief and loosen to straighten the neck.
This guys owns a guitar company, designs and builds. I’d go with Scott’s man every time.

Gwoove
What if I have 2 truss rods and I tighten one and loosen the other?
+Max B (Maxderman) that would probably just radically screw up your neck
Max B it could help twist if you have any in the neck.just got I know where to go with the adjustment
has anyone ever called you headwig? I swear you look just like that james mcavoy character sometimes
I didn’t hear a thing because I was far too focused on Scott’s scarf
That's crazy. I didn't even notice a scarf.
cool
What's this guys name? I don't think I caught it in the video?
Scotty from Scott's Bass m8
Guilty, bass player here to
Didn't knew that Charles Xavier played the bass
I play guitar and bass.
Double rods...
Gibson invented the truss rod
Any guitar players?
Puts up hand
Tis I
It seems that my rod doesn't work
It sometimes take a whole night for the neck to be affected
That's what she said...
Then she has her head stuck...
Try Viagra
I trust Rod Stewart
We dont want history. Teach how to adjust it fast and quick
There's a progress bar underneath the video. Use it.
U need history I didn't the trust WASNT suppose to be about the neck being bent it whatever
What’s all this “We” stuff
bruh
lost....
Shut up Scott. Let him talk.
Brits are long winded.
Another wasted video.

Well...the item does say 'Learn how your truss rod works', not 'How to adjust truss rods on at least the two types of Fender Jazz Bass'.
