they grade it based on the number of submission attempts. Or more like who had more ground control the entirety of the match

Firstly a good submission attempt is called a catch. The referee decides on the spot if something is a 'catch' and he calls it immediately for the judge. So, the judges look at the number of catches, the number of other less convincing submission attempts and overall grappling control, and decide who won the bout. That is what I understood from watching 4 of these. So, do not quote me on this. 😁

Kade Ruotolo Matheus Gabriel match was extremely boring. What was Gabriel's plan thinking he was going to Dela Riva spin and take Ruotolo's back? Not a good look for IBJJF players. Please just have aggressive grapplers with gas tanks that will attack and engage in trying to finish every second not just be lying down playing 🦶 sy
It wasn't that bad, but Gabriel made no significant submission attempts. I'm not a grappler and even I could see openings that he could have at least attempted to get points.
