Enamel is a crystal. Ice is a crystal. Both are similar in hardness. When two crystals with similar hardness come in contact, they break each other down. When you chew on ice, no matter how careful you are, you’re breaking down your enamel every time you chew. Despite knowing this, I still chew on ice😅
Update: yall, chill. It’s not that serious 😭 (I still chew on ice… upgraded my fridge and now have ice twice the size as before so now I have to work for it. Ugh.)

Facts! I broke molars having eaten it since I was a kid. My cravings were unbearable at times. The automatic ice maker didn't make it fast enough. I "borrowed" ice from my neighbors a few times. I ate snow with no shame and I use to scrape the ice from the inside of the freezer. (I'm 44 years old). I know ALL of the spots that have the "good" ice. Pregnancies made it worse. I now get iron infusions and no longer crave it.

Yeah, I always tell ice chompers to get their iron, and other blood levels checked. Also, as someone who has anxiety and OCD, ice chewing, skin picking (my unfortunate "choice"), nail biting, hair pulling, etc, can definitely be signs of these conditions. I know that stress immediately flares up my symptoms. Recently I asked my psychiatrist if I could go up in dose on my bipolar medication because the picking was getting really bad. It's not a reported side effect or something my psychiatrist was even aware of, but it definitely helped me calm down and stop picking. If you're on the spectrum they may also be stimming or self soothing activities.

If it's because of anxiety or adhd or anything like that, I highly request looking at chewelry! It's kind of like teething things but it's for people who have things like chewing stims, need to chew on things when they get anxious, just chew on things or their lips without realizing it, etc. I used to chew on my cheeks so much that there was a swollen line that basically rested on my teeth. I used gum for a while but that was a lot of gum. But I found chewelry and it's helped a bunch!

Hearing the anxiety thing is actually really interesting, I used to always always always chew on ice non-stop at my dad's house when I lived with him for two years(10-12 years old), but when I moved back in with my mom, after like a month of settling in I stopped. My dad is a narcissist and made me into his 'perfect image of a daughter' which I felt it was causing some mental and emotional problems but could never confirm them (because then I wouldn't be perfect if I had to see a mental health doctor) But my mom is the complete opposite! It's not a guarantee, but having an actual reason for the ice chewing coming and going gives me a bit of clarity, that I wasn't being dramatic with my assumptions.
(TL;DR: I ate ice a lot when living with my dad but not when I was with my mom and my dad's house was really stressful. I know have a clue to why that is.)

Pretty sure it’s impossible to be only “a little bit” ocd.
Edit: yes, I know that there are different levels of OCD, I just meant that someone either has it or doesn’t have it. It kind of like autism, how there’s a spectrum. Someone can’t be “a little bit” autistic. Sure, there are different levels of functioning, but they are all have autism.

Yes it is sometimes you can have a mild urge to have perfect things like straight lines that’s a bit because having full ocd is like, FOR EXAMPLE whenever you touch things even your own body you have to wash your hands or you need EVERY SINGLE THING perfect ( I think this is a nice reply but all the replies I get correct in things is saying otherwise) IM DUMB OK 👍

@@mae388 OCD is a mental health disease, not everybody is a little bit ‘OCD’ OCD isn’t a verb it’s a real disease. Everybody may have some perfectionism, but OCD is a mental health disease. As somebody with OCD, please stop using it as a verb and using it for people who just ‘likes things cleaned or organized’

I became addicted to eating ice in this year. Back in the winter I used to eat snow (in my area, snow is not polluted) and when there was no more snow, I started eating ice cubes from my workplace. But I am well fed, I am not low on iron. And the cubes have to be small and not too cold. I like my cubes medium rare.
