What a dream it would be to record a album in this studio. Unfortunately it would stay a dream for me😂 Kyle seems like he knows everything about his studio and could talk for days about it. I enjoyed every second of this tour
I worked there back in 2002 when it was called TK DISK and then it changed hands to AVEX. The Studio had 2 Large Yachts for the guests back then. The 112 channel SSL was used by the NFL to do all the Production work for the Pro Bowl. I only got to work there for a few months before it started closing down because of 9-11. NOBODY was Flying to Hawaii to Record at that time. It was a tuff time for Hawaii. It was very sad. I worked under 2 Great Engineers Troy and Gaylord. They taught me alot. I was just an Assistant/Runner, but it was a DREAM JOB!!! In 2004 I moved to Las Vegas to work at ODDS ON RECORDING. So Glad to see the Studio Still Up and Running and Looks Basically the same. I believe the Restaurant was Owned by Dolly Parton, but that may have been a rumor or false memory.. lol MUCH LOVE. ALOHA and MAHALO!!!!! PS that other room was an apartment for the owner and other rooms were for guests and musicians complete with showers
Oh wow, cool - so you were there at the very beginning when it was a private studio. It's in good hands now and in great shape. I've heard about both Troy and Gaylord from Kyle, I know they're both great. Yes, I think the restaurant was owned by Dolly Parton actually haha. When I first visited I think they were two apartments in the studio, but they've since been converted to an office and a green room for the venues. Thanks for sharing!
I also had the privilege of mixing 3 albums the A room when owned by AVEX in 2004-2005. I did use every single channel on that 112CH J and we had heaps of additional outboard ontop of the rack. Fun times! Glad to see the studio back in loving hands and still around. @lovsciencemusic thank you for sharing!
Kick ass studio. Had no idea that place existed. I always see the mainland studios on RUclips. Recorded at Black Bird a few years ago. But this place is now on my bucket list! Thank you for sharing this 🤘🤘
I miss working in studios! It used to ONLY be professional recording studios to make records. Now people make them on laptops and wonder why old records sound better...
talk about the right guy to run a studio like that. Thanks to kyle for keepring this studio heaven alive. To me this is tonly second to the BOB studios, which willl never be restored. Are there more of these places ? Great video josh, love these videos. good camerawork as well but you guys could really do with an actual cam instead of phone to shoot, to make it more natural to watch. (shutterspeed, framerate, dynamic range stuff) If not the budget, try an app like filmic pro.
Yep, studios of this caliber are truly special. There’s a lot of big studios in the world, but far fewer than there used to be. Almost big studios have changed hands over the years. And yes, I’m continually improving my video quality as i produce more content… a learning curve and a work in progress
It takes a tremendous amount of time, money, and effort to maintain such analog equipment in good condition. It must be very difficult for both the owner and the staff.
I own a commercial 3000 sq ft studio with a Neve desk etc….I built and paid for all of it. I always wonder how someone this young is able to tackle a project this huge and fund it. I can’t imagine how much this all cost to buy this place and refurbish it they way they did. Excellent excellent job.
You can 98% of that ssl9000j sound on a $1,000 interface and a MacBook using a ssl plug in. The real magic is the analog tape machines here and rare outboard gear. A lot of this crazy gear is nice but most of us normals will be mixing on a normal laptop and can still get a great sound. Wonder what the rates are here??
Mmm while tracking w home interface it wont quite equate to SSL J in a studio when it comes to ease of getting high quality sounds. But yes you can still make great sounding records with a laptop
it's not a distraction if you know how to focus on the music and what it needs...you could be distracted by having 700 plugins on your laptop. Do you need a beautiful studio to get work done? No... but it's a very inspiring environment to work in and still is necessary for certain projects and artists

Worth it!
Wow, amazing place! He's right, going through analog gear give' it that special mojo that a plugin can't replicate.
