The object of imagination can be, theoretically speaking, any POSSIBLE thing and can be as determinate or indeterminate as you like.
This structure, for anyone interested, is called intentionality; that is, an act of the mind is always inseparably paired with an object of the mind. Can’t imagine-that without imagining some intelligible content- like that a dog is flying around your house on a steam powered jet-pack, etc. the act, in other words, collapses into nothingness if there is no object to support it. Likewise, with no object, there is no act. Ina sense, these come into being at the same time and depend on each other.
With these basic tools, you can literally imagine anything (except what is an explicit contradiction, namely, square circles and the like). But at least you can have fun trying!
It’s quite fun to try to break your own imagination. It’s like trying to throw a rock faster than light or breath under water- both things you can imagine, but can’t actually do.
As an exercise, imagine what it would be like to live on Mars, taking the mode of imagining-how from the first person. What would it be like to change an air filter on your ship? What would it be like to float in your ship in zero-G before landing? What would others be doing? What would the conversations be like? What would you say to the other crew members? Would you overthrow the captain and claim mars for yourself? Would you yourself have to prevent such an uprising? The possibilities are endless.
