A difficult subject, since there are literally HUNDREDS of ski resorts in Europe. Far easier then to name the best ski AREAS, and naming the best resort(s) in those domains, and why .? Here goes .... best first .... 1. central Dolomites (now also connecting Cortina), best resort is Corvara, being central to everything, and enjoying the best mountain food in the world across 20 plus linked resorts. VAST , modern, efficient prep, too modest in claims, 20 + v. long/ blacks, severe off pistes for the suicidal 2.Espace Killy, the epitome of superb CHALLENGING skiing, and although not the biggest, Val d'Isere and nearby Tignes has just enough beginner areas to qualify on VARIETY on and off piste 3. The Arlberg, now that St Anton is linked directly to posh and easier Lech, and on to Warth. Apres also legendary. 3. Three Valleys, so-called biggest in the world, but not on variety. Some stunning skiing in 4th valley. Now expensive oligarch residency in Courcheval 1850. Best for everything is central Meribel. 4. Ski Paradiski, based in Plagne Village, offering quick links to apres + ski areas, and also via easy Les Coches to vast variety of Les Arcs, and steep black run past one of the best restaurants in France above Vilaroger 5. Zermatt, for beauty and food, but far more expensive than linked Cervinia, and the gorgeous back bowls to Valtournanche. 6. Madonna de Campiglio, in the Brenta Dolomies above Lake Garda. Lovely village atmosphere with skiing extending to five other centres offering less crowds, and lower prices. 7. the Four valleys, based in expensive but lively Verbier. Severe skiing off Mont Fort to Siviers, and fantastic powder, and crowds ..8..Morzine and the Porte du Soleil. Long circuits of mostly intermediate, but The Swiss Wall out of Avoriaz for maniacs. Good food below that... 9. Kitsbuhel, with a quick bus to Ski Welt, this is a must for dangerman down Le Strieff/ Hanenkhan, Nice old town. 10. Milky Way for cheaper everything, but most linked resorts have drawbacks. Equal 11th: Saalbach & Hinterglem, Megeve, Ischgl, Solden, Wengen, Pila, Lillehammer, Chamonix, Serre Chevalier, Alpe d'Huez, Baquira, and many other good resorts
