If you are running the Merlin firmware for your router and it is not working, then maybe revert to the original Asus version. You may loose some features but it will ease the frustration

Thank you again for all your help, and answering my questions. I still cant get VPN to work on my home network. I bought a RT-AX3000 router. Connected an ethernet directly from my root router to the wan port on it. I do get an IP from my ISP root router, but I can only access the router if I connect directly to it from one of its LAN ports in the back. I can ping it from anywhere but cannot access it. I even turned off the firewall option in the RT-AX3000 router to see if that would help, but it doesnt. I was able to configure DDNS, port forwarding on my root router and the VPN server on the RT-AX3000 router. I can stablished a VPN connection when I connect directly to it with an ethernet cable, but not when using my cell's network on my laptop. Im sure it has to do with the same issue as to why I cannot access the router from any of my other home devices, even though I am able to ping it.

Make sure you use on the Asus an SSID (Wi-Fi Network name) that is different from the ISP's router and separate the 2.4GHz band from the 5GHz band

A friend of mine suggested I should definitely install it otherwise I could easily be exposed to man-in-the-middle attacks. Thank you so much. I'm very new to this. I have a question, I think I understand.
If I had an online instance of Docker running an OpenVPN server, could I also setup my router to be a client to the cloud server? That way all traffic from that router first goes to the cloud and then the internet?

    • @KnowledgeSharingTech
      @KnowledgeSharingTech  2 года назад

Yes, it will work but you need to configure your router as a VPN client and not as a VPN server. Here's the video explaining this: ruclips.net/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/видео.html

      One more question:
I want to setup a VPN for a small office setting.
I want to install clients on remote PCs and work laptops, that when they connect to the VPN, they use the redirect gateway so their internet traffic is encrypted.
But the router at the Small office, I want it ignore the redirect so Internet at the office is not tunneled. Only remote clients should tunnel, not the client running at the office.
That should be possible within the settings right?

I have an identical setup and couldn't get access to the machines on "the other" subnet/home. The problem was obvious when investigated, both routers/gateways had the same subnet created (192.1.1.x) so even though connected, clients' couldn't distinguish between servers/machines on the two home nets.
I now use 172... for our remote location. Watching and listening to all our media are such a nice technology improvement for rainy days when the board games are all played and the fire is too boring 👍🏼

With the VPN enabled, does this slow down the download/upload throughput of devices on the home network? In other words, does local inbound/outbound home traffic (while you are using devices in your home network) also get routed through the VPN?

Unrelated question: with this particular router, are you able to pause a device's access to the wifi or set up a schedule where during a certain time frame, a certain device would not be able to access the wifi? And if this can be done, can it also be done from outside the network? I know Google WiFi allows this, but I'm wondering if this allows it as well. Thanks!

I am able to access my router admin pages remotely, but I am not able to access local IIS websites on that network. I am reading somewhere that I need to use --redirect-gateway option to 'bridge' to the local network. But I imagine that I can't just modify the config file to do this? Also I want to restrict internet access and only be able to access local web applications. Am I going to need a more feature rich router to do these things?

No, if you are connected to the router, you are on the router's network. No need to use the vpn profile. The VPN is only to browse from your network while you are outside of your network. See the VPN as the telephone that allows you to talk to your wife while you're away. You only need the phone if you're away. If you are in the same room with your wife, why would you need the phone to talk to her?

Hello KST, awesome video. I was looking for this setup and the way you have explained this is excellent!!
I have two questions on HTTPS/ SSL cert part. I don't want to use the LetsEncrypt cert because it expires in 90days. When i go into the import certificate part it asks for both private key and ssl cert. Most private keys have passwords, this one says that the private keys should not be pass phrased. Any idea on how to get past this? I created a self signed certificate using a tool called ikeyman. I extracted the public key a .cer file and the private key a .p12 file, which required a password.
My concern on the 90 day expiry on the certificate is that, if I plan to work from a remote location by using this VPN connection how would I renew the certificate?
    I would appreciate your suggestion
    Again great video!

Hi, I have been following this and also DDNS videos which I found very good and detailed but, I am hitting a wall. As most people around, I have a home base connection, meaning a modem supplied and connected by the ISP (i.e. Bell, Rogers, etc) which provide access to the internet and, like in my case, a second modem to be used for a LAN in which, you setup your VPN server or DDNS access. So, I am getting a double NAT situation and kind of stuck there because the modem provided by the ISP is very restrictive on the things you can do or change. This issue prevents me from connecting that modem from outside. Any ideas to fix this problem will be appreciated. Thank you!

Hello. 1st thank you for being a member. You can do 2 things:
1- Establish port forwarding if you can like this: ruclips.net/video/B2plrWY5fH8/видео.html
2- Simply ask your ISP how to disable their router and connect yours instead to their modem.

I did exactly like you said, but I can't connect to openvpn client, is it because im using private WAN IP? I think I need to setup port forwarding because my router connect to the internet through another router. Do you have a walk through for setting up port forwarding?

i've had this working on my asus router for a long time. but now my house changed ISP and this oen doesn;t give me a public external IP. seems like this one is using carrier-grade NAT, so i'm looking for a way to set up remote access to my home pc through that. does anyone have any advice on that? :)

Your menus are nothing like mine, I have the same router. Are you running a different software than what came on the router?

Maybe you have the Merlin Firmware or your router is not up to date?

Here is my situation, I have a IPTV box (MAG254) which will not connect to my internet, I get a Error code 1020. I believe it is because my ISP provider is blocking the IPTV's portal address. My thinking is to connect another router with VPN functionality to my existing router(TP-Link Wireless N Router WR840N model:TL-WR840N) and there by connecting the Mag254 o the VPN.Will my theory work?

It should work as long as your ISP doesn't also block connections to VPN. You need to configure your router that you will connect your IPTV box to as a VPN client. Here's a video showing how to do this: ruclips.net/video/2oCG9GYsxIQ/видео.html
Now remember that your IPTV router should connect to your main router like this:
1- Connect an ethernet cable to any Lan port on your main router
2- Connect the other end to the Wan port of the IPTV router
