Potassium Perchlorate is a better oxidizer for flash powder, and more finely divided material is better too.

I have found nitrate to be more consistent,🤔 but that is just my opinion.

    • @cleolateeple1997

I go with 5 micron AL or MG, and P Percolate as a dust. That's how you get most complete detonation/deflagration. When these go off you can feel the sonic wave in your chest and sometimes see the distortion in the air from the shock wave. Most satisfying lol.

It is not readily available anymore, that l know of, in the 5 or 10 micron fineness. Now I can only find magnesium as rough shaving and coarse powder. You'd have to grind it down in a ball mill or something like that. AL works just fine and it is more stable anyway.

@@cleolateeple1997 anything lower than 40 microns in magnesium is dangerous as the self ignition risk is high below 40 microns :) 10 or even 5 would be an insane fire hazard and very dangerous to work with. Only (dark) AL is as fine as 5 microns

Don't mix larger amounts with a metal spoon. Use the diaper method. And you should use 50% of both when you use a nitrate. The excess fuel will make it more powerful. I made my first flash powder in 1999, so I think I know what I'm talking about.
