This song was released in 1983. Written by Jimmy Ibbotson, about his daughter Jean, to try to convince his wife to stay in their marriage.
When she heard the song she said it was good and going to be a hit. She also said, You can now afford child support.
Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Tim.
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Yes, the Dirt Band always introduced this song as being about a wedding they were playing. But no one stops to think, "Why would a big-name band be playing a wedding?" The truth, like you said, was that Jimmy Ibbotson wrote it in an attempt to get his ex-wife to consider remarrying him. As you said, it didn't work. (Full disclosure: I did photography and artwork for three of Ibby's solo albums.)

@@Clell57 Ibby wrote this song in the late 70s (I remember hearing it when he sang it at Telluride in 1979[?]). The daughter's name is Sarah Jean. His other daughter is named Jennifer.

The venue looked like one of those staged for video kind of deals, they want to record like the band is playing a live show, but they don't want people dancing around to distract from the band in the video. I recall going to one show in Nashville, it was a very small venue, very dark and intimate, we were seated in kind of bleacher seats around the performer who was on a little lighted stage in the middle, and they did not want any audience participation at all, and everyone had to sit very quiet and not talk, like some kind of church service, I remember it being kind of weird, my girlfriend I was visiting shushed me when I tried to whisper something to her and I was taken aback by it, she was a singer in a band and was very serious about the whole thing being quiet and respectful or something, I can't even remember who we saw now, that's been ages ago, my memory is going

No matter what gendre of music, but especially the lively country music of the 70s (the spirit of the country music of of that era epitomises by the film Nashville in 1976), they show the approachability of the Americans doing this gendre of music.
I guess the type of beats played push the singer to have one universal spirit for all.

This came out when I was about 15/16. I loved it from the start.
This live version, while not bad, is not to be compared to the far better radio version though. It is sad that some groups and singers, when they themselves get a little bored with a song, decide to mess with it onstage. They almost NEVER improve it, and usually make it unlistenable to those who are used to the polished radio version.
This song is a CLASSIC example of a good song, worthy of being remembered, but which has been almost thoroughly forgotten by everyone who heard it for daily about ~5 years or so growing up. Then...it just faded from daily radio, to...nothing. And was gone from memory.
I kid you not, this song would have been played once, or usually MORE than once, on every single country station in the nation for several years after it came out. It had TREMENDOUS staying power. Then...it was gone. And apparently forgotten all about.
There are lots of these songs. I'll come back in a few minutes with at least a couple others that just occurred to me. "The Baron" by Johnny Cash, and "Saturday Night Special" by Conway Twitty.
Neither of these two songs have been discovered yet by ANY of the reaction channels I am aware of.
Both of these have a more developed story than Dance Little Jean, and have a bit of a surprise ending.
"The Baron", Johnny Cash (great story song!)
