+scapegoht And yet, at least twice, armies led by such archers conquered most of the known world - more than Alexander the great, and probably more than the Romans at the height of their power, and it was one these "barbarians" that were largely responsible for the crumbling of the Roman empire around its edges. It was quite effective historically.
Steve Howard All because the horses would bute the enemy? What are you trying to say here? Pretty sure that Bucephalas wasn't taught to bite the enemy.
I'm saying that cavalry was a huge leap forward in warfare at a time when it was relevant. It gave the armies of the time a means of conducting the "lightning raid" or the blitzkrieg of their day. I never thought you were talking about the comment about biting. That was pretty obviously a joke, I thought. It seemed to me that you were talking about horseback archery being impractical ... something that was NOT the case in warfare of its day. It's not going to work against today's war machines, but the horse was THE war machine of its day ... in Central Asia especially. That's all I'm saying. I'm not talking about the horse biting anybody. That seemed to be a pretty obvious joke to me.
Sancho Enkhbayar there are, most of them use korean bows since it was formerly the regulation bow in earlier tournaments, now they've allowed other types of traditional bows, which was an awesome move, cause you can see the various archer cultures of the world in one event.
He is very wrong Bows are short cuz theyre korean and turkish bows Long bows should not be shot from horseback due to space Myth Buster prove that it didn't matter about momentum They even road a car Check that episode out though And you ride towards the target and shoot them so they won't get a chance to fight back Then when you past them, you turn back while the horse is going forward and shoot behind, and person on foot can't catch up Point of going around is to get mutiple shots at a target.
Sorry to burst your bubble but this video doesn't do justice to the mounted archery the Mongolians (tatars in my country) where infamous for. The bows are too short for example, mounted archery enables the rider to carry a bow longer than his stature, and the most powerful shots are achieves riding towards the target thus using the horse's momentum. This is video is a nice celebration of some sort...Little exciting fact. The mongolian bows where estimated to be between 20 to 30 lbs...compare! :)
well this maybe 4 years late but sorry to bust your bubble, the bows aren't too short at all. They are very efficient on horseback. They carry the same power as many other bows yet smaller. How efficient is that? That's why horse bows were scary. It didn't need higher poundage bows to shoot far and hard. Longer bows are much more difficult to shoot on horseback due to how lanky they are. Horseback riding does not allow an archer to carry a bow longer than his stature. That's complete bull. That's why you don't see much horse archery with a longbow unless you're Japanese shooting a yumi which their build is different from a traditional longbow or a native american shooting a flat bow. I don't think you handled Mongolian bows at all if you are spewing this crap let alone ridden a horse. I'm a recreational bowyer and sure I may not have built many bows yet or let alone reflex bows yet but I sure studied them a bit and still is. I can tell you that Mongol bows aren't as big as you say they are. Otherwise they wouldn't be horse bows. This video does enough justice and it's not about riding and shooting towards a target, shooting sideways is much more difficult and therefore a skill shot.
Sorry to burst your bubble, lights, but almost everything you said here is wrong. I suggest doing some more research. It's a really cool topic so it'll be fun.

If you miss a shot?
The horse will bite enemy
And trample
That could work if the enemy died of a staph infection, but it's still an absurd and impractical idea.

the Mongolians are expert in this and conquered large territories in the Middle eas,t the crusaders never interfered
any mongolian archers there?

nice
yesssssssssssssss ! : )
20-30 lb draw.... not weight of the bow.... jesus....
And these bows are weak cuz they're only for competition to hit the target. Nothing to kill here.
The music was so awful and out of context that this tournament might as well be sponsored by McDonalds...
go Iran!!
