Why did the first 10 seconds explain why I don't do tequila? Listen, you're right, but stop stalking me! 😂

I've always liked tequila, but it's only fairly recently that I've come to recognise the sheer depth of flavour that it's possible to get with these spirits. A couple of weeks ago I treated myself to a bottle of fortaleza reposado, and it's absolutely phenomenal stuff.
Really interesting to learn about the age of the plant itself, I didn't know that at all, and it kinda puts the price of top shelf tequila into perspective. It seems crazy for a young spirit to sell for the same price as a good quality 15yo single malt, until you consider the time involved in actually maturing the crops and the resulting limitations on supply.

I love the complex flavors of agave. It makes for quite modular spirits, and I've been keeping some bottles around more often these days, for easy mixes with fruit juices.
Great video, and a great expert guest with Alec!

Congratulations to your guest and you for this clear, simple and down to earth introduction to agave spirits. Mezcal is a trend since more than a década here in Mexico, but information is poor. Most of the time people that are supposedly informing or educating about mezcal speak from an ideological or pseudo-mystical stance that doesn’t inform at all. Unlike scotch, the are no clear parameters to know what kind of spirit you’re about to buy. Online information is mostly based on what the companies say (this happens mainly with tequila). Another situation that makes difficult understanding mezcal is that brands appear and disappear and some of the mezcals you can try in a bar are unbranded. So, for the time being, one has to rely on a trial and error method. Most of the time that’s a lot of fun.

Hi Cara, what an interesting show! At the start you mentioned youthful disasters. I had mine at 18 in 1972, put me off white Bacardi and Coca Cola for life!
But cocktail mixing reintroduced me to rums including other white rums.
However, your show continued with great interest, for it was only cocktails that have introduced me to Tequila and Mezcal. I know the problems happening in Mexico with the plants etc, feeling that the bottles of both are now inferior, the remaining quality produced bottles now unaffordable and I have to use the cheaper ones.
My Mexican cocktails are fewer because of this, though I have bottles of both if needed, but my main drinks are now rum, vodka, gin, brandy or whisky based.

THANK YOU so much for the education. I sooo love the agave spirits. Left for a bit for health reasons, but I'm back better than ever. You have such a way of making learning fun, you ask great questions that are on the tips of our tongues every time. Do you have a go to for tequila? On a more personal note, you have great taste in wardrobe, always look wonderful. Cheers!

Now this is some good stuff! Gonna be awesome to hear your thoughts on some of those lesser-known spirits, and I'd be curious to know if there are any recommended agave spirits outside of Mexico too (a more global approach could help with supply and sustainability perhaps?). Sotol was a favorite of mine for a while, but lately I've been back on the mezcal train, and it's been craaazy seeing these spirits take off in popularity and awareness.

I'm not ofay with agave spirits so this series is awesome thanks guys! From a layman's point of view, it looks like blending of agave spirits is more like rum blending, where they take the weird and funky to make an awesome blend, rather than most blended Scotch seems to be made to make it more balanced, repeatable and palatable?
