I've had a Mr. Buddy Heater for about 5 years now. I've used it 3 times during grid down situations due to ice storms. It performed well enough that I bought another a couple years ago. Now I have them set up to run off a 100 lb propane bottle attached with 10ft. hoses. I also keep several regular propane bottles handy for the grill and smoker. While not a permanent solution they'll get you by in an emergency.

Thanks AP. I noticed the awkward start up right off the bat. Having mobility issues in my hands I always look for things like that. I love my regular Mr Heater Buddy. It's 9000 btu's and with an adaptor I can use the 20 pound propane tank instead of the expensive little 1 pound bottles. It was $70 at both Home Depot and wally world. Much Love

The biggest advantage to buying the big buddy is the 2 tank hookup. Being able to hook it up to two 20 pound tanks is the better option.

Very honest review....I own a small buddy heater and I'm happy with it for its intended purpose...this however is not only expensive...(I can buy 2 of the smaller units for that price)...But the features aren't all that impressive...I saw a hack where you can remove and reverse the protective grill and use it on the small buddy heater to cook or boil water....Thanks.

I love your american prices....here in Canada this unit over $300
the cook unit is 200 $
the buddy 5 ft hose unit is $70
    one 20lb propane tank is $65 - $70
Total with taxes = Over $600
    Not worth it ;-(
I am happy with a camp fire or alcohol pop can stove for cooking food in parks, boiling water for dehydrated meals

I have a Mr Heater that screws right into 20lb tank. Light with a match. Have to hold starter button for about 45 seconds and it starts sounding like a jet warming up lol. When on low, I get about 2 full days of heat - big drafty room. If use in smaller or more airtight/insulated area, it would probably last a lot longer. It has tilt safety. I put tank on old cookie sheet and put big pan of water in front on floor (to have to go around as well as adding moisture into air). I hope this helps give another option.

Thanks for the review. I bought the Buddy Flex combo when they first came out. I really like the heater for camping. I like the 180 degree feature and it packs up a bit better than the Big Buddy. If you're looking for a home emergency heater, stick with the Big Buddy units. I heat my 400 sqft workshop with a Big Buddy hooked to a 20lb tank.
For cooking, I think I'll stick with my JetBoil or dedicated stove. The add-on cooker is a nice concept but I'm too concerned about food or oil accidentally dropping on that big open burner.

I have 2 Mr. Big Buddy heaters, both have 12' hoses with 2-20lb tanks and dual Stove Fans. Love them! The Flex is a proprietary pain. Cannot use the Cooker Stove by itself, has to have the Flex Heater for fuel. Not happening...When I bug, I want my stuff versatile as possible so I can mix/match. This is NOT it! Stick with the Mr. Big Buddy and you'll stay happier. And you can find much more versatile propane cooks stoves for a lot less money.

You kinda forgot to mention that (for some inexplicable reason) you have to light the pilot on the heater to put heat on the heater's thermocouple before the heater will relay gas to the cooker. I'm REALLY not sure why that was a necessary design element. (The heater will not run while relaying propane to the cooker.) I only purchased this system because I found each component marked down by a lot at different locations at the end of a winter season. And as you said, this is a redundant system for me. Kind of a winter outage / bugout unit. It's nice in some ways, but odd in others.

Great review but I have some info to share you can also use 20 lb cans with the flex which you made it sound like you couldn’t. Also yes the big buddy is a higher BTU output but you get high or low, there is no adjustable temperature and others claim you either stay Luke warm or sweat in certain camping situations. I do own the flex and love it. I have a 3 season room where I store my beer and pop and use the flex to raise temps out of beverage explosion ranges 😂. I ran it an hour and brought the 160 sq ft room from 20 degrees to a comfortable 65 degrees and shut it off until the night and repeat prior to bed. I never leave it unattended. But seriously one of the better videos. Thanks!!

Can it be used in a tent safely?

Yes, I used an older model Mr. Buddy back in 2008ish in a tent in 20 degree weather all night. Never hurts to have a CO2 alarm with you for comfort.

I’ll stick to my Big Buddy. Since it’s MY heater, i don’t need the 180 degrees, I’m the one directly in front of the heat. 🤪

I need help. I have a cottage on cape cod I like to go too for the weekends in the winter but unfortunately there’s no heat it’s about 1000 sq feet max. Does anyone recommend this? I’ve tried electric heaters but they suck lol

Uhhhh, yea, no. Money wise, you'd be better off going with an 18,000 BTU Mr. Buddy $229CAD Canadian Tire and a 15,000 BTU Gas One stove $100CAD on Amazon. I'd also get the hoses to go to a large propane tank for both.

I bought a Big Buddy for heating emergencies. I think that is a overpriced toy version.

I dont like the fact that it needs a battery and a fuel source.
