    "Making a game for everybody is a game for no-one."
    That's the motto of the recent homerun of a game, Helldivers 2. It is also a quote from Arrowhead, their development team. I believe the difficulty as described by yourself and other content creators will end up being a big contributor to POE2's success. Allowing GGG to further separate the game from their overly-accessable and thus alienating competition like Diablo 4.

  • @helljumper_
    @helljumper_ 5 месяцев назад +4

    I played 200 something hours of poe, really wanted to like it but it wasn't really my thing. Poe2 on the other hand is compared to a souls like in many of these reviews, which is great news, this game sounds like will be more up my alley than the first one. Really happy about the WASD movement too.
    Side note: you mentioned some of the abilities had too long wind up times, Aris (avoidingthepuddle) said in his review that those can be interrupted by dodging, he mainly used the charge up abilities to whiff punish enemies/bosses. It's probably weird if you're looking at it through the lens of a traditional ARPG but if you treat is as a souls like (spacing and all) it makes sense.

      Souls games are also good because they balance difficulty with fairness, you can only blame yourself when you die. GGG has to keep the difficulty feeling fair while dealing with random combos of monster modifiers, types, map mods, and other randomness that is inherent to ARPGs but not souls games. They couldn't even get the balance right on the 1 of the 3 classes they flew journalists out to showcase bro.

    difficulty is always a substitute for lack of content in arpgs and it's why all aprgs get easier as more content is released. it's a purposeful design choice to create the illusion of there being more to do than there really is. remember inferno difficulty in diablo 3? remember how difficult poe was when it first released? as poe2 gets larger it will get faster just like every other arpg that has ever released.

    • @iFoss
      @iFoss 5 месяцев назад

      Yup. If it was easy from the start, you'd end up having to tune back power creep way too much once you add on to the game. And even tho it is a needed thing to do, player perception of nerfs will always be negative. Also, it's better to start off too hard and make it easier than the other way around. Same thing with loot/rewards in general.

    I could totally be wrong, but I don't think they want it to be Souls-like in difficulty. I know Jonathan (lead dev) has already mentioned in talks that one help could be in improving shop keepers' loot tables, or in some way improve the likelihood of getting, for instance, a decent weapon. I guess a lot of folks who played the demo felt unable to progress because they simply didn't have any luck in finding a weapon upgrade.
    In PoE1 for instance, there are near-guaranteed ways to get a physical damage weapon from using vendor recipes involving items you will 100% come across. When I hear guys like Llama, Zizaran, and Alkaizerx talk about how challenging the game is, I really don't think that's what they want the new players they're trying to draw to PoE2 to deal with. @eepopgames2741 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@rabbitcreative I do play all those other ARPGs too. Doesn't mean I can't want this game to also be reasonably accessible too. There is a difference between a game having hard content, like PoE 1 ubers, and having everyone but dark-souls enjoyers hard locked by the second zone boss.
      If all you have heard is that is is harder, and take that to mean its 100% the goal, maybe you need to consume more PoE2 content. The devs have had numerous interviews where they talk about how they were looking for a wider market with PoE2 and trying to make for a cleaner new player experience. The near universal assessment of PoE 1 is that its an amazing game, with an amazingly frustrating onboarding process, but when you get past that its the best. They don't want to repeat that. As it is now, they have cleaned up PoE2 from a lot of the "understanding the game" struggles that they have with PoE 1, but they have replaced that frustration with a different one. GGG are great, but hopefully they recognize that they have a real hardcore gamer focus that can cause them to have a blind spot for how new players interface with their games. They have made statements that they are doing blind playtests, so it seems that they do recognize that shortcoming and are trying to compensate for it.
      And of course, maybe PoE2 won't be for me. If so, thats fine. But I could repeat the same thing back to you. There are a ton of souls-like games for you to play too, or Ruthless PoE 1, No Rest for the Wicked, or Masochist Boots in Last Epoch. Its fair for everyone to have their opinion on what would make the game most enjoyable for them and express that for the Devs to see.
      Overall, it looks like their core systems are solid, and the fact that those who found good gear had a much easier experience means that the changes to let players self-select their difficulty level don't have to be extreme. Something as simple as giving a quick influx of just enough resources like Gold, Alchemy Orbs, etc at the beginning to jumpstart people could solve things without any under the hood changes. Those who need help can spend those resources, those who are fine with the difficulty can save them for later. I have faith in GGG's ability to appease both you and me with their game.

      Jonathan has said in a few interviews on the subject that he wants you to "die three times on a boss". Seems obvious then that an act 1 or 2 boss being so difficult that high-level ARPG players are dying 10+ times isn't the intent for the finished product. They're trying to design fights that are solvable through mechanical play, and punish you harshly a few times while you figure it out.@@eepopgames2741

    I'm really worried about it being compared to Souls. Regardless of your opinion on Souls-like games, imagine doing all those intricate timing-based combat mechanics with constant lag. I also think they'll alienate the core audience for ARPGs if they make it too slow/difficult/mechanical.

    Common missunderstanding about poe is those exploding screens. Poe is neverending pain that you need to overcome, those screens dont explode without a character similar as high end javazon. There always something harder to do, harder boss to kill etc. And yes, poe bosses even in poe 1 are very souls like stuff. And thats what people enjoy.

    When a manual dodge or similar mechanic is added to the game, instead of just clicking to move away from the incoming attack, then it becomes a Souls like game. Unfortunately this not for me. Okay so my thought is more business minded I guess . Sorry. I like to see things from that angle.
    Any developer making a game that hard and slow and constricted are idiots. That’s it. I don’t care if 60-100k people line up to play that trash. Talk about stupid business decision 101.
    For all the D4 bad talk, guess what…… millions play their games even when they are bad. They print money and the masses keep coming back. This is why they will be goated. It’s simple. All their titles focus on looking good and making money. Win. And yes many things are wrong and need changing with the game but it still prints money.
    PoE2 will fail massive cause even most of their biggest streamers didn’t like ruthless lol. It’s like their management thinks it’s smart and cool to make a game hardly anyone plays. And my proof is league launches. A whopping 60k queue in the states. Any guess how many hundreds of thousands or millions log in for a big diablo launch or hell even league of legends event or something. GGG are clueless. They can keep their little game, small audience and their tiny few content creators that think they are better than everyone cause their game is hard lmfao. The joke is on them cause it’s only their community and think they are the best.
