Charlie Chaplin - How to Make Movies (Full Film)

  • In January 1918 Chaplin moved into his own new studio, built in the grounds of an old mansion on the corner of Le Brea and De Longpré, and then still surrounded by orange groves. His cameraman Roland Totheroh had recorded the construction of the studio, filming at intervals from the same position so that the film could subsequently be assembled to give an illusion of speeded-up action. Chaplin had the idea of combining this material with documentary shots of the studio at work, to make a film to be called How to Make Movies. It was never finished or released, presumably because the distributors, First National, did not think that such a casual documentary of this kind would be an adequate replacement for one of the comedies with which Chaplin was contracted to supply them. Although Chaplin used some of the material in The Chaplin Revue in 1959, it was not seen in its entirety until 1982, when Kevin Brownlow and David Gill edited the whole film together as originally intended, following the continuity provided by a surviving title list.

It's a jewel. This is perfect to give a class about cinema. Charlie will always be the cinema's orchestra man. Although you aren't in this world, I admire his intelligence, creative, versatility. You had all the professions in one. Great Charlot!

I love this film! It's been years since the last time I watched it and it's hilarious. Only Charlie Chaplin could make a documentary like this and make you laugh with it.

i think it's so interesting that as a Director he would demonstrate how to perform to his actors. He was so involved in the whole process. 7:50

Interesting film historically. Hollywood was still an agricultural town, but that was soon to change. I am a big Chaplin fan.

Haha, the part that makes me laugh most is when he tries to pick Edna up and his foot skids out from under him. (All the weight probably came from that immense fur coat, haha!) And then he obviously says something cute to her as she's going to sit down. Even after everything that happened, he could still (and always) make her smile. That's probably why she always loved him.

    Genius.
In the conclusion of the Symposium, Plato’s Socrates remarks that the same dramatist can skillfully write both comedy and tragedy. Plato proves this by establishing the dialogue itself as a mixed (“high” and “low” / “tragic” and “comic”) satyr play of sorts. ONly those who have gone through hell can write comedy. Thats the law of the universe.
