Bro…the term “walk the dog” was used by Mom when my brothers would take hour long showers and she would scream, “stop walking the dog and get outta the shower!”
Slightly contrarian take - I think the reason zack's hats sound better is not necessarily because they're louder, but because he's confident they're right in the middle of the beat. Oh wait, he actually says exactly that 🤣😅😳
Thanks, mate! This video helped me out with jazz drumming for gigs on zoom calls! You deserve all the gigs you can get! From the young Australian drummer.
About time.i want to start jazz drumming but theres no teachers around.and youtube is either the basic 1st lesson,or truely good players like yourself, who have learned about most about it
I’d also say it’s important to practice accenting different parts of the ride pattern. All four beats, on the skip notes (like Elvin), and also on 2&4.
My go to jazz beat is an extra hard four on the floor swing shuffle with a nice snare backbeat on 1 and 3 while simultaneously playing a quintuplet ride pattern. It's something to really get those booties movin'
A humble offering of point of view but: that "walk the dog" principle is broken by histories best jazz drummers. I've heard stilted jazz ride feels and even five note quintuplet quantised playing of the ride feel. Isn't it a feeling that is determined by either the song composition and or by the intended effect by the drummer player in that moment? Just asking and thanks for the great videos and more importantly amazing lessons which above all I appreciate most about this channel, forget any stupid debate I may offer peripherally
I’m starting college in a week and I’m scared to death of what the jazz band is gonna think of me bc I’m always so afraid that my tempo is off even though people said it’s fine in the past idk
Why should you care what they think? You’re in charge of the tempo. Besides, it’ll sound boring and robotic if everyone’s on the exact tempo and there’s zero variation. I’m not saying you should just go 20 bpm over/under, but don’t worry too much.
So i have learned today that fat chicks are the key to jazz (: Time to go tell people that with no context All jokes aside, great video my man, really helpful :D
Hey Zack 👋 I hope you're doing well. Really like your videos (grooves and C H O P S). I was wondering if you could help me with somethings... Whenever I play 3/4 or 6/8, I usually play the snare on 3, or 4, respectively. I was wondering, what's the backbeat for those times?
This video is so good, Zack deserves all the kisses he can get.
Salute
Sus.

i wonder whats the terminal dose of kisses
You should teach us more jazz. Maybe do a series. I’ve always wanted to learn to play it but always found it so hard. Help us

I’m a big fan of telling people to use spang-a-lang. I find it easier to say at faster tempos and to keep the feel.

As a metal and rock drummer i find this is very insightful
Nobody cares
I play jazz guitar lol but I still love watching all your vids, really fun and interesting to see how jazz drumming works.
I personally love the "tighter" swing, even tho in my opinion it's a lot harder to achieve for a beginner
Yooo u need to keep posting this format!
Then end is just an “Ohh Peter” moment😂😂😂
I’d also say it’s important to practice accenting different parts of the ride pattern. All four beats, on the skip notes (like Elvin), and also on 2&4.

You should do a chilled out song with Saxologic
From now on I'm going to mis-meter the phrase walk the dog, just because.
That “Yeah” at the end reminded me of the Hodge Twins.

I also played the drums for that song in my jazz band
Love your drumming!!
