Going dutch is perfectly fine. 3. Out of the blue - unexpectedly. Need not necessarily be a person coming unexpectedly - it can also be an event taking place unanticipated. 4. "A Brown Study" means to be lost or absorbed in one's thoughts, lost in reverie or being in a pensive mood. The full idiomatic phrase is "to fall into a brown study." 5. "A dog's life" means a miserable life. Not only in context of livelihood but also in the context of being harassed and tortured. Dogs are pelted with stones, beaten with sticks and generally lead miserable lives. Hence a dog's life is extremely pitiable.
