I’m 13 and I have a small welding business. I do pretty well, and I finally found an old service truck that I’m making into a welding rig. Until I can drive legally my dad or grandpa drives me around to jobs. 👍🏻
You're off to a great start. Sounds like you're a productive and responsible young man. Please keep on track and you won't regret it down the road. 👍👍👍👍👍
Northeast Nebraska pipeliner. I had a large chain welding supply employee that was amazed at my pancake. Couldn’t imagine using the small lense. North of Wichita and south of North Dakota our welding supplies are horrible for our area of work. Nothing on hand. It’s a struggle so I stock up when I find sales
I’ve been trying to get onto a pipeline job for about a year now. I work in refinery as a iron worker and always make people my friends and usually leave with several new contacts on my phone I definitely get closer to the welders since they always seem to encourage someone that’s trying to be a welder as well.
Union ironworker here, and its pretty similar for us too. You have your tool belt your supposed to supply yourself with several essential tools, and everything else you would need is provided by the contractor. Weather it be welding machines, grinders, impact guns, ppe, etc....
Austin, I’ve been watching your channel since the start, I’ve learned a lot of information from your videos. I’m not a pipeline welder, but I offer a mobile welding service as well as fabrication. Thinking about starting my own RUclips channel. Always look forward to your videos! Keep up the good work!
As a Welder myself 11+ yrs.. You have alot of views. But No Self Health encouragement. Dental, Lungs, Physical. Be cool if you could a video on Welders Health Brother❤❤
You should do a video showing the very basics for younger fellas. How to use a belt, how to build a slide/crotch, how to tie a tag line and use it properly. Just the basics for a greenies first day on the row.
I love your videos Austin keep them up you have a good outlook on life, I’ve been welding pipe line and oil field 20 years now but shits not looking good again LOL go figure that one. A man better have a lot of money saved up while working that’s what I do nothings steady out there but we will survive right? Keep it up brother I’ll keep watching your videos keep them coming, I wouldn’t advise nobody to be a welder, back in the old days it was better, I’m actually looking into being a welding inspector now.
Steve, unfortunately it's not just pipeline welding. Its jobs across the board. I'm 60 years old and went back to college last year. Studied in computer science and the main take away is there is no job security in any job. Technology changes so quickly that the most important skill is to keep learning and being able to pivot and adapt. Interesting note is that after decades I now just am taking a welding class to get my skills up so I can fabricate. I live in a area that is so costly that custom fab work is the way to go. Imagine 45 million dollar homes and yachts are the norm . No big stretch to do a stainless steel patio railing job at a couple million. Crazy eh? Anyways, keep on adapting and don't underbid .
I am Union currently on a compressor station job... (fab work)...... contractor is supplying pipe bevelers, pipe cutters, V-Stands, grinders are NOT supplied to us,..... I carry my own short barrel and hand cutting torches
Good video! Hope everything is going good with you and Kayla. Hang in there, all this virus crap is going to pass and things are going to get busy again!. Keep up the good work and be safe.
95 % of the last 7 years I've worked for MPG they will give you anything you want but you better be ready to git after it like no other as well they are the best I've ever worked for
So I see you have a sae 300 I looked at the newer ones on Lincoln electric page. Can you make a video of the whole machine so more New comers like myself wouldn't be so confused @AustinRoss Because I'm confused on where the leads hook to and where y'all find the quick disconnect for the torch hoses. I don't see any videos of people explaining the sae 300 I'm not a new welder I know stick, tig, mig, flux, arc gouging, and plasma and oxyfuel cutting but I'm new to pipeline
Austin, I know 2019 has been a bad year for you being a pipeline welder. However, for the period starting in 2014 through 2018 can you tell me the number of hours you worked compared to the total hours you were available to work pipeline. Figure 2000 hrs/yr available not including OT. Seems like there are 50 welders for every job, at least right now. Stay well, we will get through this!
Rarely is ths the "supplied" PPE the best and/or most comfortable and practical PPE for a "tradesman" doing far different work and far more "importanf" work than "laborers" and having your own "supplies" and being ready to go to work immediately as soon as you're on the job saves everyone time, money and hassle when a "professional" doesn't have to go to a "warehouse" to get the basic essentials to do his job.
Can you do a vid on how to talk to rig welders? Like at a pump I get asked and only asked “where’s the work?” I don’t get a hey how you doing, nice truck, how’s things going, I don’t want to sound like I’m not getting attention but dang I’m a person too lol.
I remember i tried to "Talk" to one, and this guy was straight up brick wall. As if he was not good enough to talk unless you paid him. I got the hint and just walked away, on my way out of the gas station he kept staring at my rig.....yea buddy 😎
I think the biggest reason they supplied the consumables was 1 like you said to keep the welders welding now the secondary reason to keep the materials consistent between people
Austin, what are your thoughts on that MSA skullguard? Had mine about 2 years and love it! Great Channel btw, has taught me a lot as a well driller(I weld the casing)
cool vid. just curious, how much of that stuff do you return after a job is complete? for example, the hammers? do they keep tabs on it or, its yours once you have it?
Good video I do not understand the english. excuse my grammar el marro truper, what do you consider to be of good quality compared to the presio or worth a estwing? Un saludo desde mexico
I am a welder in a shop up here in Canada, been welding a little over a year(MIG). My question is how is the Coronavirus affecting your job? Are you still working and maintaining distance? Thanks! -Kevin
I personally am not on a pipeline job yet. But I know several guys that are still working on pipeline jobs. They have not shut the pipeline jobs down yet to my knowledge. I have heard of plant jobs being shut down though. I assume because of working in closer quarters with others. As to to pipeline where everyone is outside and spread apart.
Will Allison...He has a video on this...I think he uses the machete for "repairs" where they have to peel the pipe wrap off of the pipe or something close to that...b
Is there a such thing as the company/union supplying the rig maybe at a different pay rate until funds are secured for rig ownership? Just kinda curious and thought it was a decent question.
not pipelin but there are tons of union pipe fitter welders in building trade that work singlehand meaning contractor supply rig. almost none of these pipe welders have a rig no need for torch or grinder either.
@@max-sr5dg I just a out to take my 6G test and try to get on a job. AWS has suspended testing in my area and "most of the work dried up overnight" from what I've heard. Mostly just fab shops hiring.
