Good job, you where very thorough, a lil tight on the back lash, (gets tighter when heated) but I understand the shim swapping, major pain in the .ss . Really liked the video, excellent information. Thanks.
Thank You! I have used summit racing for my parts for years and will definitely continue to do so. Great products and great prices and customer support! Thanks for the comment !
You could try to assemble it with nothing but the Carrier and bearings/shims installed. Tq the caps and see if it spins freely and smoothly. If not try a different cap orientation. Worst case scenario is to take it to a machine shop and have it line honed
I have an 8.8 that was recently rebuilt. But, when you let off the gas, there is a loud howl. Its quiet otherwise. What is causing this? Backlash or pinion preload error? Or something else?
Generally, That's pinion bearing related. It's possible the bearing preload wasn't set up correctly, or it's just a failed part. Could be carrier bearing, but in my experience I would definitely investigate both pinion bearings to start.
hey bud i had the samething happend to my pinoin chipped the end tooth off , did you still use that gear or did you replaced it, i noticed that it dosent contact anything on the where pattern.
I opted to replace it. Would it have been a problem? Hard to say. But I tend to error on the side of caution, as opposed to the "just send it" mentality
I tried putting in a set of gears when I did the 5 lug conversion (CuZ I wAs AlreAdY iN ThErE), little did I know I was way over my head. I wouldn't even be surprised if we left the pinion shim out. We reused the pinion races with the new bearings. Didn't check backlash or gear pattern. Slapped it in with the old carrier shims drove it down the road, horrendous sound on the coast side. Brought it to a shop to fix it, they charged me a little over $500. I'm pretty sure the original pinion races were reused cuz on the coast side it still whistles. I've probably put 10,000 miles on em, I'm just gonna run them till catastrophic failure. But since then, I've done a lot more research and taken a class at community college on rebuilding manual transmissions/axles/transfer cases so I have a little better understanding. I'll give it another go eventually, but i'll probably get the book on how to do it as well
When checking the pinion preload did u use the crush washer while checking it , I wanna rebuild my rear end in my foxbody but never done it before I’ve watch over 15 videos so far I get lost with the pinion because of the crush washer being a one time use
Yes, use the crush washer. You need to "sneak up" on the preload by tightening the pinion nut. This in turn is causing the washer between the inner and outer bearings (these bearings are tapered) to collapse or "crush”, bringing the bearings closer together in the housing. You are looking for a recommended tolerance between these two bearings which is measured by the rotational force or "tourqe" needed to turn the pinion. Let me know if this helps. If you would like, i could do a quick video on it too if you're still not quite sure.
I would not recommend it. That's not to say it hasn't, or can't be done. It will be a challenge to see the reading on a beam style tq wrench as your turning the pinion tho...
How’s the royal purple working out with the Eaton Posi? Love your channel by the way super informative… I just finished up an 8.8 build myself your video helped a lot!
Great so far! Super quiet operation from the Eaton diff... Thanks for watching and commenting my friend! Stay tuned, hope to release a vid on the finished mustang soon!
I'm in thr South....ughh need to build a gear up to 400 hp with an 8.8 I dagum guess.......I have a 96 Bronco rebuilt the ENTIRE frontend for death wobble but its the pinion bearing.....I need a long term hardened street/trail with longevity to it....Ive got too much invested....Dagum I would just pay you guys I have an f-150 with another shell.....The part of College I didn't finish......💔 Crush Dreams....GOD LOVE!
Like your attention to detail and cleanliness. Good job, thanks for your video
If you put that tooth under your pillow, all you're going to find in the morning is an invoice from the Snap On guy.
Just finishing up my rear and came for a refresher. I found clutch bits from previous owner and his rebuild as well. Thanks...

@Drag Race Therapy wow! That's a massive comment right there! Very cool of Summit
great video man! thx
What to do if you didnt mark the bearing caps and dont remember their orientation? Great video btw!

@@Dragracetherapy great idea!
Good video. Do prefer Eaton over True Trac thanks

Supposedly, it got all new bearings, races and gears. But, maybe wasn’t professionally assembled.

Did you have to heat the ring gear and chill the carrier before putting the two together? You didn't show that part...
No, I did not have to do that with this combo.
@@Dragracetherapy cool thanks for responding! I appreciated the video you took the time to do. I trust the rear end is holding up well?
@@MartyEscarcega so far so good 👍. And he drives it everywhere! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
Thanks for a proper 8.8 how -to guide.
Do yourself a favor and get the Ratech Smart Sleeve 11001. It's worth the $11. I keep a couple on hand just because. Nice video, you do good work.
Hello, the clock has a measuring dial in inches not in millimeters?
That's correct. Inch pounds
@@Dragracetherapy thanks
Where does the crunch sleeve go
Between the inner and outer pinion bearings

What I got out of this video is I'm not trying to rebuild my rear end
Definitely taking it somewhere after watching this lol

You cannot use old race with new bearings
@@CobraR1993 Oh i know now, lol
It is possible with a click torque wrench because the spec range is so big. 18in pounds to 26.
I know, 2 years late but- the answer is no. you want a beam style wrench, and the lighter the better, like one calibrated in inch lbs.

Yes you can we do it all the time!
Did you use a 1 1/16 3/8 drive socket
3/8 to 1/2 adapter

nice work dude . Would that differential be good for a daily driver?
Absolutely! A great upgrade from the factory limited slip unit. Just be sure you get the correct spline count for the axles you will be using.
@@Dragracetherapy sounds good . I will be doing this job this winter ! Thanks for the info
Maximum motorsports suspension 👌👌👌
Yes sir! All maximum Motorsports stuff on this build. From the K-member to the rear panhard bar.

TOO LOSE BACKLASH! DRSG RACING SHOULD BE .004-.006"!
Thank you! This was a street car build tho so I decided to stick with the gear manufacturer's specification for this application
We set them up .003-.005 other wise it will clunk on decel when it breaks in!
