it’s really offensive how they turned one of the biggest trans gender musicals that broke down doors for the trans community into a drag show when one of the biggest struggles trans women go threw is the fact that there considered a man in a wig and makeup like a drag queen and this episode literally is that stereotypical shit and it’s so bad like there are so many talented and befuddled trans actresses like most of the. you can even tell we trans and yet they decide to turn the musical into a drag show uhhh i hate it

"him saying this, about to sing a song from a musical about a trans woman, while also not having a trans character on the show. i can't stand it." God yes blow OFF.
One thing that I heard about Riverdale musicals is that for harmonies they don't put the singers in the studio together to harmonize, they record them all separately and then just layer them. That's why when they sing as a group it doesn't sound good.
I have a feeling that the whole Kevin’s Generation Z speech was a cry for help. “We are numb but also screaming inside, listen to us” it’s the cast asking for help!!!!
I feel like I'm one of the only people who have actually seen the musical. the musical is basically about a genderfluid (pretty sure) person called Hedwig who was more or less forced to get a sex change but it was botched. Hedwig was left with an inch, it says in one of the songs "a one inch mound of flesh". and that is why it is called Hedwig and the angry inch as well as the band being referred to as the angry inch. so basically it was so not appropriate for Riverdale to do Hedwig. they had to change SOOOO much
Compared to what Hedwig went through, these kids have nothing to complain about. Far preferred the reverence that Sex Education gave Hedwig, Steven Trask even posted about it.
You were close. Hedwig is a gay man who was forced by his mother and boyfriend / sugar daddy to get a sex change surgery in order to get married to Luther, it's boyfriend, so that they could move to America and escaped communist Berlin together. Hedwig learns to accept being a woman while in America it is not gender-fluid

Would have loved to have seen that played out on the TV show but no, we can't have nice things like that with great Storytelling
I really just want to know why Cheryl says Mr. Honey is queerphobic because he tells her she cant do a song that is about a sugar daddy? How is that queerphobic? And why do the writers of Riverdale insist on placing teenagers in awkward and uncomfortable scenes with very very grown adults? She and her RiVeR ViXeNs are gyrating and hip thrusting all around this man. I understand that they all sounded a lot better singing this musical's songs, but that scene is still inappropriate and weird. Also Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and Archie yelling at each other in that song was funnier than I think it was meant to be.
could say that for the entire show😭😭 there’s literally no point in them being teenagers bc all they do is over sexualize them. you can make a show that revolves around teenagers and it be angsty, show sexual things (bc that’s realistic), and have some drama without it coming off as such a try hard. take Sex Education for example. it’s got a lot of realism, with a few bizarre things in between. riverdale, to me, seems to throw in ever tragedy, trauma, straight-out-of-wattpad scenario you can think of and it’s all too much. “wE aRe gEnErAtiOn Z” like okay we know your target audience is 13 year old white girls but tone it down. just a lil.
Boy, that scene made me sooo uncomfortable. I especially hate the over-sexualisation when it comes to Cheryl, Toni and the Vixens/Poisons. It has gotten so creepy. I swear Toni barely wears any clothes anymore and does absolutely nothing when she used to be a very cool and badass character. Edit: God, I just remembered the episode where she was sexing up Veronica's (definitely adult) sister for some kind of plot twist. So gross!
@@kaepiper yes, or also Skins. ana k/ Yeah I mean I don’t know that show but I’m sure it tackles teenagers and sexual things in a better way than this show does. Riverdale has a very bad track record with teenagers saying or doing sexual things around grown men and women. Just a few off the top of my head: Archie and Ms Grundy (This was ABSOLUTELY disgusting, and yet it was treated more like a “forbidden love story.” Honestly I could write an essay on how awful they wrote this Cheryl making inappropriate comments about Mr Andrews (RIP Luke Perry) being a “dilf” TO HIS FACE Betty STRIP TEASING in a BAR while her MOTHER, boyfriend and boyfriend’s father just watch Veronica insinuating that Archie, Reggie, and Maddog should do a shirtless car wash because of horny suburban moms I’m giving the writers some serious side-eye
as every single musical theatre teacher i’ve ever had has said: when words aren’t enough, you sing. riverdale never uses this role because they’re just scrolling through their script and dropping songs wherever they want. they’re not thinking about the impact or the lead up, they just want the music there
ruclips.net/video/OaO3M-zZR8E/видео.html Basically what the guy in this video is saying. Characters only sing when they’re trying to convey their thoughts and feelings, when they have a hard time conveying it, then they switch to dancing edit: I just realized that Trin included clips from the same video from Sideways in this video :D
And it makes everything about this episode make sense, from the way the songs are almost all ripped out of context to make them shallower to fit this episode about "principals suck, wahh let us do our fun little play!" And just the fact that they chose Hedwig at all, in some sort of shallow bid for like. Woke brownie points without really getting or wanting to get into the shows pretty complex subject matter (not that Riverdale would've been able to handle it well so maybe it's best they didn't even try. Lord) They did this for the aesthetic and "the kids like drag race and this is kind of drag right?? Close enough" "the music sounds pretty don't think too hard about what the songs or story are ABOUT who gives a shit we're Riverdale season 4"
ayo "fun" fact: They erased Jughead being asexual. Jughead is canonically ace in the comics and they erased it for bUgHeAD. Also side note there possibly half siblings btw. They both have the same brother meaning its incest time.
Twisty Sunshine and besides that gotten rid of most of his storyline, if he’s not with Charles doing what he’s best at ( investigating ) he’s just the guy who died but didn’t die. That’s all he is right now and I hate it so much, for a narrator they’ve completely erased his storyline
it’s so upsetting how they use casey cott in riverdale especially in musical episodes.. he KNOWS his way around musical theatre,, he went to carnegie mellon for christ sake! it’s truly a waste of talent,, i hope he has better opportunities in the future to prove himself as an amazing actor AND singer
I didn't know this about him and I don't watch RD anymore but that is not surprising. The last musical episode I watched I noted that he had one line in one of the song's but that he should have had more because he was clearly the best singer of the main cast.
Les miserables is one of my favourite musical movies, and Anne Hathaway did "I dreamed a dream" with sooooooooo much emotion. The way she sang it always makes me cry.
Glee was wack but the good kind and they did it on purpose. They also chose songs that would suit the actors voice. Like Quinn: she had a really soft voice and couldn't belt like Rachel, but songs like "I feel pretty" were absolutely amazing for her and are memorable because of it.
More importantly, Glee was a show about a HS group that sings, going into the show you know to expect music. Riverdale has no business doing such episodes. They feel out of place and completely shutter everyone's suspension of disbelief. And of course Glee had a cast which was chosen among other things based on their ability to sing. These poor actors in Riverdale are just being forced to embarrass themselves. Except that gay character, he's the only one with a good voice.
Yeah! The one most important thing when you're doing a musicals should be the *music* so I don't understand why so many movies and shows either don't cast people who can sing, or they don't just dub in someone else's voice for the songs. Old Hollywood had a lot wrong with it but they had a point when they used to do that regularly for their movie musicals lol, we should being that back.
i can't speak for the other actors, but casey's theatrically trained - he did community theatre and went to carnegie mellon! also his brother corey is like a big deal in the broadway world
When you realise trin has missed: Cheryl’s dead twin’s corpse in their basement and Cheryl talking to it. Toni killing cheryls uncle, The supposed spirit of cheryls dead triplet which she apparently “absorbed in the womb” haunting them through a doll, which turned out to be cheryl’s mum tryna mess with her, Jughead moving schools and then being locked in a coffin in one episode, two of the teachers nose diving out the window, them trying to kill jughead and him pretending to be dead and fooling the whole town, Betty and archie pretending to be together to make people believe Jughead really was dead, Edgar Evernever trying to escape to space in a rocket but alice shoots him. Betty’s new mystery brother Charles works for the fbi but is secretly in a relationship with chic who is in prison who used to pretend to be bettys brother, Evelyn Evernever hypnotising people through the phone to try and kill Betty, and archie trying to take down a drug lord coz he thinks he’s batman. And all of this was only the first half of season 4😳
Riverdale's head writer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, actually worked on glee as a writer from 2011-2014😬 so I blame him for some of Glee's ridiculous storylines and Riverdale's musical episodes that no one asked for lol

If you watch the episodes without context they WILL feels disconnected...you don’t know the story or what’s happening...that’s why it feels disconnected lol
Like what were they THINKING lol...at least Heathers was *kind* of fitting given the high school setting. And given all the wild soap-opera shenanigans the characters get up to, I remember watching that video of that episode and finding the "can we just be 17" song actually kind of poignant for a brief fleeting moment. But they were still stretching their credibility with Heathers and Carrie, they had NO business trying to touch a show about the complexities of gender and sexuality and cycles of abuse, self-worth, and the nature of love and all. (I mean, I know what they were probably thinking, something like "Well it's kind of an LGBT thing, we need to boost our credibility on that. Kids these days like the drag race and all that kind of thing. That's close enough, why not?")
riverdale is supposed to have so much representation, but there's three important LGBTQ characters. one of them is crazy (cheryl) and actually needs help, another one was first shown as a criminal and then there's the cis gay playing a trans character. also, kevin shows up twice every season. then there's characters they just throw at it so Kevin has a relationship
Season four is set in 2020, it’s a really small town so they don’t have that much expensive stuff, since their jobs are only limited to riverdale, none of the companies do work anywhere other than riverdale
They all act like the principal is insane for not letting high schoolers perform a non kid friendly musical in a highschool like the principal seems like the sane person in riverdale right now
i get that but the kids at riverdale highs lives are far from kid friendly so it makes sense but injust think honey isnt used to that and they wanted to do a musical that reflected their lives.
I love Hedwig and the angry inch and when i originally heard Riverdale was gonna do it as a musical episode i was just like god no, firstly cause all the previous musical episodes just destroyed their original counterparts. But also because i was thinking about how are they gonna do the musical (if they did it as a school show like the others) as its has 2 characters and a live band, along with the fact that the lyrics/ themes are not exactly 'PG' so they would probably ruin it by yknow Kidzbop-afying it, especially after the Heathers episode where the lyrics were so botched that it ruined it. The vocal range of Hedwig in Riverdale's rendition suited them better than Carrie or Heathers, as those are two extremely challenging and vocally demanding shows, (not that Hedwig isn't a hard show to perform) but vocally it sounded better than their other musical ep. but it moved away from the original vibe of the show. Like Trin said (and just about every director/teacher I've worked with) "when words aren't enough you sing" and in the og show and soundtrack you can hear the pain (and other emotions) that are held in the actors voice. It is with these imperfections that we are able to hear the emotions that are being let out, but in their version is just sounds like they're singing a song for the sake of singing a song- no or hardly any emotion- and that's what hurts their performance. like if we could hear emotion in their voices we would enjoy it more. (like the point about live action film) I would really recommend you watch a bootleg of HATAI - cause then you can actually see the emotion of Hedwig's story. - I know that you probably wouldn't have known this either but the character of Hedwig (in my opinion) wouldn't be considered a trans woman (as the surgery wasn't really by choice) but more of genderqueer rock n roller. -The actual writer of the show John Cameron Mitchell doesn't believe Hedwig to be trans or the story of Hedwig to be a trans story i know this is long, so if you read this in full, let me know your opinion and yea
ShameldaTheMomFriend™ honestly same like I used to watch riverdale but there came a point where it was too ridiculous. I was hoping however that they would introduce musicals in an sincere way that didn’t ruin it as for most people these musical episodes may be the first time they are introduced to that world. Particularly with this musical it’s important it’s done in the right way and they should’ve looked at the identity and gender the way the show is set out to do.
PS: The whole seducing their principal thing isn't the first sexualization of herself that Cheryl has done. They had this incredibly dirty choreo to a pop song when cheer leading, earlier this season. Also, note that their coach was against it and they locked their coach up during the match. It's disturbing at this point, they are supposed to be minors for crying out loud.
Also I think isn't she supposed to be a lesbian?? If I'm wrong somebody pls tell me, but if not it was...certainly a choice to make the one (Also underage!!!) gay girl on the show constantly sexualizing herself to older male characters like this. Like if it was an actual plot point for exploring some trauma or issues the character is working thru that would be one thing but. Cmon. This is Riverdale. It's not that deep for them lol...

I just hate how much Riverdale tries to be "woke" and stuff. It just comes out so cringey. Pile that on top of their kids bop voices and the terrible writing and it just becomes a shitty show. Idk how this show has people that actually enjoy it. It's so bad.

The show is trash
it’s really offensive how they turned one of the biggest trans gender musicals that broke down doors for the trans community into a drag show when one of the biggest struggles trans women go threw is the fact that there considered a man in a wig and makeup like a drag queen and this episode literally is that stereotypical shit and it’s so bad like there are so many talented and befuddled trans actresses like most of the. you can even tell we trans and yet they decide to turn the musical into a drag show uhhh i hate it
Bored and tired H exactly! if they wanted to do a musical about a trans woman they could have at least had the decency to create a trans character. what’s the point of the line about celebrating genders if you don’t have any trans people on the show??
Hedwig is not trans tho. She was forced into transition and then just went with it.
@@SD-zz4ov She would still be considered trans, as she had to turn into a woman, meaning there is definitely some sort of dysphoria from knowing she should be a man.

@@LemonSte umm clearly you have not watched the show. Chic was gay, a southsider whose name I can't remember right now but who is consistenly in the latest episodes-Fangs i think?. and a couple other gay guys have come and gone throughout the seasons. there is honestly tons of LGBT people in this show/ heck Archie's mom even became gay for an episode. literally out of nowhere for no reason. I dont have anything against LGBT characters but it's pure ignorance to claim Riverdale doesn't have any. and to be fair Kevin has gotten a good amount of storylines in the last couple season which im glad about cause he does deserve more screen time.
AW301517 and Charles too
@@AW301517 I have watched every episode 😂 I just don't have a detailed memory of it. Why? because it's an overly complex and terrible show! Used to like it, now just sort of watch out of boredom. I'll give you that chic is gay, but he's not a main character. Charles dated chic, could be gay or bi. Fangs is bisexual, he had a thing with Midge. As for Archie's mum, I already said I know there's gay female characters lol.

It's bc a boomer wrote this and they don't know the difference 😂 they're aging backwards so they can keep being high schoolers
I mean their actors are millenials, the characters are supposed to be Gen Z tho lol
Genderfluid isn’t real tho soo
@@ryanatorraptor5223 not up to you to say that
You were close. Hedwig is a gay man who was forced by his mother and boyfriend / sugar daddy to get a sex change surgery in order to get married to Luther, it's boyfriend, so that they could move to America and escaped communist Berlin together.
That show has everything you mentioned but is very realistic and the characters are somewhat relatable in a way or another ( I say somewhat relatable because for example I don't do drugs or things of the sort but I still relate to them). It's an amazing show, if you haven't seen it yet I totally recommend it
ana k/ Yeah I mean I don’t know that show but I’m sure it tackles teenagers and sexual things in a better way than this show does. Riverdale has a very bad track record with teenagers saying or doing sexual things around grown men and women. Just a few off the top of my head:
Archie and Ms Grundy (This was ABSOLUTELY disgusting, and yet it was treated more like a “forbidden love story.” Honestly I could write an essay on how awful they wrote this
Cheryl making inappropriate comments about Mr Andrews (RIP Luke Perry) being a “dilf” TO HIS FACE
Betty STRIP TEASING in a BAR while her MOTHER, boyfriend and boyfriend’s father just watch
Veronica insinuating that Archie, Reggie, and Maddog should do a shirtless car wash because of horny suburban moms
I’m giving the writers some serious side-eye
Minnie
i want mr honey to murder them all
as every single musical theatre teacher i’ve ever had has said: when words aren’t enough, you sing. riverdale never uses this role because they’re just scrolling through their script and dropping songs wherever they want. they’re not thinking about the impact or the lead up, they just want the music there
ruclips.net/video/OaO3M-zZR8E/видео.html Basically what the guy in this video is saying.

Yes, the writers and directors knew what they were doing, that's the difference
biggest difference that everyone on glee could actually SING

Yea they should do a highschool version or a classic that's appropriate.

i get that but the kids at riverdale highs lives are far from kid friendly so it makes sense but injust think honey isnt used to that and they wanted to do a musical that reflected their lives.
Yea haha Cheryl literally locked one of the teachers in an office and then was confused when Mr Honey was pissed at her
hxney bee Principal Weatherbee let them do Heathers
(like the point about live action film)
I would really recommend you watch a bootleg of HATAI - cause then you can actually see the emotion of Hedwig's story. - I know that you probably wouldn't have known this either but the character of Hedwig (in my opinion) wouldn't be considered a trans woman (as the surgery wasn't really by choice) but more of genderqueer rock n roller.
-The actual writer of the show John Cameron Mitchell doesn't believe Hedwig to be trans or the story of Hedwig to be a trans story
i know this is long, so if you read this in full, let me know your opinion and yea
Blaine was written to have an eye injury in season 3 of glee so that he could perform in Hedwig without compromising filming
Everyone: 'Are you a Murder mystery, are you a Drama, are you a Comedy, are you a Musical? What are you?'

PS: The whole seducing their principal thing isn't the first sexualization of herself that Cheryl has done.
When they started hissing at eachother i LOST ITKSSJSJS

It’s like, when they auto tune the song so much, it doesn’t feel like the character is singing, it feels like the actor is singing in a studio.
