@@dennislang4375 Around 1960 you had to lock your stock trailer at the sale barn. Farmers went around sticking bull calves in trailers to get rid of them. Hard to believe. Southern Wisconsin
We are dairy farmers in Wa state and we justify lots of purchases these days because we say it’s only a few bull calves. It’s funny that he is doing the same
@@Otis1953 Actually, Otis, I was not a buyer, so for me, the small dairy, I spent more on gas (40 miles roundtrip) than I got for the calf. At one point, I remember contemplating just burning the carcass's.
Just seeing how clean ur animals are is just amazing. By watching the videos u can see what kind of farmers ur family is, should be proud of this. Great job!!!
Eric, I am a Philadelphia suburbanite. I am so often blown away by the nuances you MUST attend to be a successful dairyman/farmer. I had no idea what you must attend to ( from grubs to silos to cost of what seems to me like every tidbit of what you touch every day, etc., etc., etc. ) to keep your head above your expenses and labor. Seems to me that I would have to be on fire to move and think fast enough to do all you do. You (and your dad )are awesome. So good to know people like you are caring for the soil and grass and critters we depend on for our existence. God bless people of the earth.
Farming like any business is complicated with many moving parts. The people that cant stay ahead of the curve go out of business pretty fast. Farming is a hard and complicated job.
For years i had trouble growing in my garden. I finally figured out it was slugs. They would chew the stems on everything and kill the plants. I started using sluggo (diatomaceous earth) and it works great.
When I read the Title to your video Eric I was amazed. I was not aware of slugs being a problem out in the country fields. I of course was thinking of the ones I always see in my garden and around my lawn especially after it rains! So, you could imagine my surprise when you showed us a slug up close and how small it was considered to the ones I have in my front and backyards! But then you mentioned the number of slugs in your fields and that explained the damage they can cause along with the groundhogs added. Besides enjoying just hanging out with you all, I learn a ton and that really helps connect the dots for this knucklehead! Appreciate your time in making these videos too Eric! MOO From next door in COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
I enjoy your commentary on what is going on and why as it makes your videos more interesting to folks like me that is not farming. Thanks for taking the time editing and posting.
I didn't know about the slug bait or how it was applied. I'm having issues with moles and groundhogs, I know how to take care of those critters. You got a good deal on the tires and rims. Thanks for sharing, I hope all goes well, have a nice evening!😀
An udder great video.. Thanks! Hey Eric, I bought some Triticale breakfast cereal. I'm already mooing. It tastes good and also has oats, barley, red & white wheat, spelt, and flax seed. I like it with a little pure maple syrup. Yummm.
Ahh, no better feeling than getting a new set of wheels and tires for your equipment! I’ve been a subscriber a few years now and for some reason, I didn’t realize you had pastures for your herd. A joy to see how the cows reacted knowing they are going out to it!
Sorry to hear about the slugs after all that hard work. Just a side note, it would be great to see a mural of 10th Generation Dairyman on your new concrete silo!
Nice optic showing those three tall silos...towering over your family home farm...maybe sell advertising space...lol...thanks for taking us along..👨🌾🚜👨🌾😍
Seriously, he might be able to sell ad space on those silo's. Basically 3 panels 135' up, and if local regulations allow it, it could be extra income. Perhaps even cellular antenna, since they are poured concrete and not stave type. Again, local regs... 🤔
Woah, so many new things I learned about today! It seems like farming would drive me crazy with worry. I'm a perfectionist, so having things go wrong even when I do my best is so difficult. Big respect to you for grit and perseverance and problem solving!
We are having the exact same thing in Wisconsin here!! We had a beautiful field of beans and the slugs are everything. It looks like we never planted it.
I've been struggling with slugs and groundhogs in southern York county much more than normal this year. I feel your pain. Thanks for all your work on the videos.
Thanks for all the uploads recently you’ve been pounding them out. I watch a lot of farm videos but yours is my favorite. Haven’t found any chocolate milks hiding in awhile 🤣🤣
I got large vegetable gardens for 4 decades and the slugs are worst I ever seen them this year. I also had to replant peas 3 times so far. Beans are suffering but might make it.
Love watching your videos, I'm out in Indiana County and we've got more slugs then usual as well. My chickens are loving it though. Have you guys ever been out to the Indiana County auction? They have it every Thursday at 1 in Homer City. Usually pretty good prices.
Time to do some ground hog hunting. Sad to see your hard work messed up so soon in the year. The new silos look really impressive. The construction process is really interesting. Hoping the slug bait works well. Amazing how much damage the slugs have done. The investment in the bait might pay for itself by saving the plants. hopefully the bodies of the slugs will add some fertility to the soil. The new tires and rims make the skid look sharp. Thanks for another great video Eric. I always look forward to them and enjoy them.
12:25 Never-ending height! That worker standing in there looks like a little child in comparison to that vast silo. What a project for the growth of your farm. In 100 years from now when your descendants are running the operation, those silos will be near the end of their life. Maybe they will fill them with shelves to store things and put an elevator in to get to the shelves. You never know!
I had to get new rims for my 35 year old 4 wheeler for the same reason. Rusting out and wouldn't hold air. I guess drowning slugs in beer doesn't work for that kind of acreage.
Great video! Slug problem isn't a good thing. You should seriously consider selling ad space or leasing silo's for cellular antenna. I don't know your local regulations, but I know of several poured concrete silos being used for cellular antenna around here.
I remember 20 years ago taking a load of 30 baby bull calves to an auction 2 hours away to watch them go for $1 a piece. Dad said we didn’t make enough money to buy us lunch. It was a good memory.
Tweels are a lot more expensive, but I wonder if the downtime saved from flats, etc would be worth it. Only the hubs are steel and supposedly they work in manure that freezes on the vanes.
The space shuttle SRB’s (2 white rocket motors) were only 30 feet taller than your silos. Your work ethic is phenomenal. Young people should see all you do instead of complaining about “how hard they work”. They haven’t a clue. I love Jersey cows. Is this an experiment ? Milk fat plus quantity of milk ? I really enjoy it when I see you’ve got a new video. As busy as you are, that’s admirable. SaskDutchKid must be busy. It’s been three weeks since he posted but can’t see how he could be any busier than you with all the major construction you’re doing, etc. Thanks for your efforts !!
Eric...are you missing a flash drive or pocket knife? (14:50) on the ground...might have a Targus logo on it...maybe too late by the time you review this. Hope it wasn't yours.... Great video of completion of the pour of the third silo! Keep up the good work Sluggo?! 👀🐌🐌🤣🙂😆🙃😆🙂🙂💪👏👏

Silos look good, Sorry to hear about the slugs. I think potash was a good choice, as nitrogen is either prescription, and or you don't want to burn crop. Now i know what you can put on the field for a farm. Back in the garden I would put plastic frogs with a top, and in the chamber i put beer, it was great until you clened it up. the only way i knnow of to fight slugs is tillage get that spring weeds ground up so the slugs do not have that damp blanket of weeds and growth to live under while they eat the hell out of the bean crop
Just a wee question , maybe some of you guys will know the answer, why aren't the bottom of the silo's finished wouldn't be better to have a good surface for cleaning out etc? Please enlighten me, it's doing my head in ?
There is the humor we all know and love! Sluggish 😂
I love that the new monetary unit is "Bull calf"
In the 80's when I was dairying, bull calves were topping at $100 bucks and for awhile it was a good bull calf that would bring
$10 some weeks.

Any thoughts of a robotic milking system, to go along with the feeding system?

Slugs are 4 "to 5" here in Florida
