Your video saved me so much time. I started reading the directions that came with slides I purchased and they were very confusing. Using your method I had then mounted and installed in less than 20 minutes.
Wow! The simplest instructions I have seen to intall work area drawers! Thanks so much. I am putting drawers in my shelves which look like your shelves in your video.
My compliments, my good man! I am just learning to become a wood worker and have never built a drawer, or installed slides on one. Without your video help I was suffering and failing miserably!! Once I watched how to attach the slide to the drawer like you do, and then attach the drawer side with the paint stir stick as a spacer, it worked out perfectly!! Well done and my sincere thanks for the "how to" video!!
I was always the child who held the flashlight or handed the tools to my dad when he needed help with various projects. Luckily, I learn a lot by watching -and now your video has helped me better understand what I should have done yesterday (ack) when I tried to install drawer slides and failed miserably- lol. I think it’s a task that has a tricky “simplicity” - sure the other videos I watched earlier made it seem easy- but Michael Phelps made swimming fast seem easy too… ;) Thanks for being so helpful- It’s great if I have the fancy extras (if they work) but I love that you shared how to work smarter by using what we already have at hand. ❤
That is what I try to do. More than anything I try to show the simplest way to get the job done. It is the 80/20 rule in reverse. 20% effort for 80% results is good enough most times.
Glad it was helpful! I have been planning for a couple of years to make a follow-up video with several different styles of slides and how to deal with cabinets or drawers that are not square. I just haven't done it yet, but I hope to get it done soon.
I have also been watching numerous videos on installing bearing drawer slides. This has definitely answered my search and is the solution I was looking for. Thanks for the video. I feel now much more confident that I will be able to successfully install the drawers for my kitchen rebuild project. 👍🏼👍🏼
Just take your time and use spacers blocks, and you should be fine. The mounting holes are slotted, some vertical, and some horizontal. If you need to make a small adjustment, you may need to move a screw to the right hole where you can slide it to make any fine adjustment you need. For a kitchen, you will be adding drawer fronts. If the drawers are off a little, it will be covered by the drawer fronts.
I just discovered you, thanks to your great method for mounting drawer slides. I put nine drawers in a cabinet using your method. Easy and fast. I scanned through your other videos and saw the short presentation of the Foreman-like pocket hole machine. I sure wish you would make a build video and set of plans for it. Thanks.
I am sorry I haven't made it yet. I have put in for several vactions at my full-time job over the next few months. I plan to get several projects including the pocket hole machine done.
That is what these drawers are for. They are all full of nuts bolts and screws. I still have to go buy screw on every project. It seems I never can find the one I need.
I am sitting here trying to redo old cabinet drawer slides. Two days so far a d still none installed. it looks, easy but not so. will now watch your video!
@@ShopRamblings I used part of your method and part of mine. Instead of a spacer to set each outer slide I measured from the bottom of the carcass, that way if my spacer was off by 1/16" I wouldn't keep stacking in the error until the top slide was off by 3/8".
Hey Robert, another excellent, easy-to-follow video. I've always stayed away from adding drawers to my projects because of the fear of having to install them. Other channels make it seem like you need special tools and jigs in order to get the job done. Now I'll look on your channel to see if you have an easy-to-follow video on how you made the drawers. (If you don't have one, please consider making one). I have a few projects around the shop and home that can use some pull-out drawers. (Edited: I just found the drawer videos) Thanks again for sharing.
It depends on if you are just installing a drawer or if they are going to be above a cabinet. For normal construction, I use 1/2" overlay concealment hinges unless I am trying to match something already built. That means the cabinet door overlays on the hinge side 1/2". Just to keep it simple, I do 1/2" on every side. I always build the cabinet first. Then, I measure the opening and add 1" to both the length and width. Keeping it simple, I do the drawer faces the say way. So if the drawer opening is 14" x 5", I would cut my drawer face 15" x 6". I a situation where there is not a rail between the draws measure from the top of one drawer to the top of the next drawer. Then, subtract the gap you want in between the drawers. If from top to top is 6" and you want a 1/4" gap, then when mounting the face, it should be 1/8" from the center of where you want the gap on top and bottom. The next drawer will be the same to give the total gap.
The easiest way is to place the slides in the opening where the drawer goes up against one side and measure to the other side. Some slides will tell you the amount of room that they take up. I find for this style slide that it's normally about and half an inch on each side, so I just make the drawers one inch smaller than the opening. 📏📐 #DIY #HomeImprovement #Handyman
Great job Robert. Do you have a link to the screws you used to mount the slide to the cabinet. It went by to fast for me to catch the picture on the screw box. Thank you!

Looks good. Simple. I like it. If you made your drawers with a 3/8" overhang left and right on the front it would close the side gap down to about 1/8". Might look a little better and keep even more dust out.
I wish I could post pictures in the comments. I have gone back and put walnut draw fronts with 3/32 gaps. Closed up the gap underneath in the front so any dust that goes through the dog holes comes out the back and I completely closed in the drawers in the back. Not more dust in the drawers. Maybe I will shot a short update and post it.
Hi Robert, I was wondering how you knew what size you made your drawers to fit your space? just for reference purpose. I have numerous draws to install a box and was wondering if you could help
I measured the opening. I subtracted 1/8". Then divided that by the number of drawers I wanted. Then made each drawer 1/8" shorter than that. That gives 1/8" above and below each drawer.
Easy peasy lemon squeezee. Nice, repeatable process. Just one thing I would do different. There is a reason the manufacturer went through all the trouble to put those cut outs on the roller frame, and it has to do with installation.
You can keep out more dust by just making the front board of your drawer wider and have the drawer close against the outside edge of the frame. You don’t need a decorated front panel and you won’t have a big 1/2 “ gap on each side of your closed drawer. The drawer dimensions remain the same except for a wider front piece of the drawer. There would still be a .125 gap vertically between drawers with the exception of the top and bottom drawer fronts that could be a 1/2” taller to close the gag at the top and bottom of the drawer stack.
Great video. The drawer side slide spacing is very well identified but unless I missed it how did you determine the size of the spacer between the cabinet slides?
I don't know why but I didn't realize just what the spacer was you showed at the very first. Once that clicked it is a no brainer. Sorry for my confusion.
Hi Robert, just installed 5 draw slides in a set of drawers, my first time installing more then one, it was a challenge, it took a lot longer then 2 1/2 minutes believe me, then this morning came across your video, Wow! You made it look so easy, Just a quick question you set the slides on a flat bench top, and marked your spacer to suit, then when installing you added a spacer under your first slide, dose this not alter the spacing, when you fix the top drawer, or is it just me miss understanding the process. Great vid it’s given me much confidence to attempt another one at some stage 🤪👍
I mount the slides touching the table. There needs to be a small amount of space under the draw, so it doesn't rub when opening and closing. I normally use a 1/8" spacer.
Very cool - how do you do it with face frames though? I get the spacing and the front one is easy - but with a rear mounting bracket? Or do you add spacers on the side to make up the difference? Thanks!
I am not sure if this type of slide has a back mount. What I do is cut a spacer block. I measure the lip on the inside. If it is under 1/4" I will somethime I will just put a couple of washers. More than that, I will cut 2 strips and put them vertically, making sure they are where the screws go. Then I use screw long enough to go through the spacer and into the cabinet.
New viewer here. Great video. Can you give me any guidance on how to calculate the width of the drawers in relation to the frames taking int account the thickness of the slides? Thank you.
Most of this kind of slide takes 1/2" each. Measure your opening width and subtract 1". If you think your slides are not standard, place both sets against one side and measure from the other side to the slides, and that should also give you the correct measurement. If you need more help let me know.
Why do the rails have to be mounted on the bottom. Why not the middle so that it's easier to drill for the first rail? Or mount on top of drawer so when things fall to the side it'll act as a stop.

I am not sure I completely understand what you are trying to say. My drawers are 1" narrower than the opening. The slides are 1/2" wide on each side. I mount the slides flush to the bottom. I used a paint stick to give me just under a 1/8" gap on the bottom. I used the same paint stick to mark the spacer for the slides above the bottom one.
