Ian, as a small business owner I can relate and empathize. My industry has seen huge changes and competitive pressures over the past few years. It's not a sad fact, nor a happy fact. It's just a fact. And one that will continue. That said, your passion and willingness to invent and re-invent will always serve you well. Truly what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Hang in there.

I found myself in a similar situation. I ran my small business successfully for 17 of the 21 years I had it and tried to do a lot of things to keep afloat but at the end I just couldn't. It's really stressful, really scary and challenging but it's just part of life. I'm 100% confident that new opportunities will show up for someone that's incredibly dedicated, hard working and kind hearted as you. Cheer up Ian! the best may be still to come@@EssentialTennis

Ian, thanks for the honest video. As someone that has watched your videos since the start, I’m pleased you’re continuing despite the tough times you’ve had. You and James will smash it as a small team and without the stresses that come with big overheads, you can create what you want, rather than what you have to, as after all… life is too short to stress!! Thanks for everything you do for us all

Like you I grew up in Wisconsin, but in Madison. I was late to tennis and parents didn’t have the extra money for lessons as a teen. So I mostly figured things out from hitting against a brick wall and watching others in the 80s. Flash forward to today, I’m a very popular full time tennis pro at a top club in Houston the past 4 yrs. Before that I was a tennis pro in NYC.
With hundreds of students I have always shared links to your content with great feedback. I have always been proud of your passion and work as a fellow Wisconsinite. Job well done!

Ian, it’s great that you are reinventing yourself. Clearly you are passionate about Tennis. With reinventing yourself, I would highly recommend reading VIC BRADEN’s book Tennis for the Future and the revised Tennis 2000 and every video of Vic on RUclips, especially the ones about biomechanics. Good luck!

Sometimes I unabashedly watch your videos WITH my students because you present the information so well, I know they are getting good value for their lesson time.

Hi Ian. I found your videos 18 months ago when I picked up tennis again after 15 years away from the game. Your knowledge and method of coaching/explaining have been so helpful for me as I've fallen back in love with the game. I wanted to say thank you for your dedication, hard work, and talent for coaching and providing tennis knowledge through this medium (not an easy feat.) Thank you for sharing the good and the bad here and having this difficult conversation about what you've experienced with this business/channel. I'm looking forward to continuing to support you, the content, and your channel as you start over. Thanks again!

I just watched your video, and I must say how heartfelt and heart wrenching it was. You are one of the good guys, I share your name (Ian and Essential Tennis) often. It's been a rough few years for any business, you are not alone. You have provided so much to the tennis community in honesty and from the front, the reality that we as rec players face. I would like to personally thank you for that. And you are correct, I have several tennis skills subscriptions but yours is the one I always make time to watch. You have a gift in presentation and in making us understand the lesson.
It's a new chapter for the business world in general, for online, brick and mortar, with AI taking a front seat (is it real or is it ....). Lots to ponder and wonder. Keep doing what you're doing, find a new way or keep doing the same way but more aggressively or differently. You will figure it out, but in the meantime, I appreciate you immensely and what you bring to the tennis community; you are "The Guy" for the rec tennis community. Believe that. I'm sure everyone else does too.
    In gratitude,
    Tracey

Yours were one of the first videos I looked at when I grabbed the racquet for the first time 2-3 years ago, at the ripe age of 34. I'm 37 now and have learned to play with both hands (all but the serve which is still only with the right), and I remember how much information I got from your videos and how I liked your approach to distilling that info.
Thanks for that and here's to great new beginnings! 🥂

Hi Ian! Thank you for your candor and transparency! I’ve been a subscriber for many years. I have watched most of your content purchased your book in two formats and own several of your courses. I believe that you are correct when you speak of the internet competition. However I quickly learned that too many coaches lead to confusion and less time on the courts working on your game! So I only subscribe to your channel and refer you to my many USTA teams! Your content is superior to all others and has been extremely helpful to me and so many others who won’t take the time to write you! Thank you for all that you’ve done to help me and so many others grow our tennis game! I’m looking forward to seeing and celebrating the evolution of Essential Tennis! Hang tough my friend and trust God to carry you forward! Blessings for you, your staff and family!

Dude! Thank you for your video, and your videos. I have always enjoyed them, and your sense of fun and passion and your clarity and ways of explaining things. My heart goes out to you in and around having to let go of your team. Years ago I owned a clinic, and having to focus not only on my core work but also the work of keeping the cash flow going was a lot. Too much, in fact. I, too, eventually stripped down my operation to the point where it was just me, and I couldn't be happier. Good luck in your next steps, and may the creativity flow freely for you and James!

The birth of RealTennis out of the atrophy is an absolutely powerful element that has a lot of legs left. Truely. Amazing and still the best in its genre/market. Hope you refer both channels to each other. Have the brands reconnect. (I loved that time and space in the warehouse. Maybe you can find a great one once more! As part of new directions) It seems you also really love doing that type of presence, and the product of it. In a sense it's like the podcast to your educational content. It's a more personal casual vibe. You pop off the screen, during matches and commentary.( I mean not as much as Scott but heck who does.) I hope RealTennis remains part of your focus on ET. All the best to you.thank you and respect from Europe.

I have learnt a lot from your videos over the year, and I totally get how it is, even as much as I love tennis (and doing some side coaching), I found myself watching less and less of tennis content over the past years as I get more busy with other things.
Nonetheless, here's hoping we'll all be here for years to come and share our passion for tennis for more people! godspeed!

Ian, thank you. Your channel and content sparked a new chapter in my life as I recovered from injuries looking for a new way forward. At 55 years old, Tennis became my new fitness fun activity and your channel taught me so much, it accelerated my growth so much that it feels like I’ve been playing for years. I hope you find a new way forward that suits you because it will certainly thrill so many of us. Again - thank you.

Very transparent, honest and from the heart. Got into the channel during the pandemic, mainly for the matches which are entertaining and quality content .... especially the smack talk! It's clear how invested you are in the subject and business and it's clear how challenging the recent phase of the journey has been for you. As we say in the UK, you look knackered. Only advice I would give you is to look after the important stuff - your health, wellbeing and family. After that, nothing else matters. If content doesn't get uploaded the day you want, nobody dies and nothing explodes. Having said that, everything happens for a reason so good luck with the reset and look forward to seeing the next chapter.

Having a small business is a grind man, gotta keep on reinventing yourself in this sphere, especially online. One area that is often overlooked in the online tennis world is there aren't enough breakdown of strategy, shot selection, tactics, technique of PROFESSIONAL matches, and why a player was able to either play so well or what they were doing wrong to lose a match - or where their technique went south on a certain shot. It's always really interesting to hear from the commentators why something went awry or a breakdown of an awesome shot in slow motion (they used to do this a lot more with the likes of Cliff Drysdale breaking down Novak's forehand for example). With someone who has the size of your audience on RUclips, I bet that a lot of people would tune in, I know I would! These types of videos could separate you from the rest of the online tennis channels IMO.

I’m a big supporter, very grateful for your content. You helped me get into tennis to begin with. Love your book as well. Don’t be afraid to make simpler videos-if the content is helpful for what rec players want, that’s enough. I still watch really simply produced/edited videos if the content and talking points speak to me.

I appreciate your honesty in everything you do. Very best of luck going forward and I wouldn’t be opposed to a where are they now video.
