My advise to women especially, be persistent about changes you notice in ur skin. When my dad got diagnosed with Basal Cell, I followed up with a dermatologist regarding a new small, round flesh colored bump on my forehead...he said it was an enlarged oil gland...a year later, however, I said I wanted it removed...so he did a biopsy...and it came back positive for basal cell carcinoma.
@DebraWarrick Yes! I had similar on border of lip 💋 for yrs. *several* derms ignored it, then it got bigger. They still ignored it but It said I wanted a biopsy. It was squamous cell carcinoma! I now have a 1 inch vertical scar below my lip.. Grateful, didn't need chemo,, etc
I had a spot that fit one of the things mentioned in this video so I made an appt with a dermatologist. Turns out that spot is a squamous cell carcinoma and it was caught early. I wouldn’t have had it checked out if I hadn’t watched this video. Thank you doc for making these videos and for your expertise!
I'm so glad you are dedicating the week to this subject. My mother was recently diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on her nose and as much as it is a "not-so-bad" kind of cancer, because it is on the nose she will need plastic surgery and it will impact her face and self steem. The crazy thing is that we saw it growing for years and years and never thought about it as a threat. So thank you doctor Dray for making these videos. I know for sure they will help lots of people who had no idea how skin cancers could look or feel like to look for professional guidance as soon as possible.
I have skin cancer and this was a great video! Thank you. I use my sun screen every day and see my dermatologist every six months! Have a great Thursday! Mine were flaky round spots that were pink sometimes or very light tan. It was also itchy.
im 33 and 2 years ago they discovered skin cancer in the face and my back but nothing seem to be damaging my body as of my age.. but i have not done any new operations on my body or anything.. im swedish so im not sure whats its called but my face is very damaged at this time...

Thanks so much for this very important information, Dr. Dray. As an Army brat, I often lived in tropical and semi-tropical areas while growing up. No winter, just endless summer. Everyone in my family was tan, all the time, but we’re also Italian American and kind of started out that way. My first diagnosis for basal cell was when I was 28, the second when I was 30 and the third when I was 33. All the lesions were on the center of my face, tip of the nose, where labial folds would eventually develop and just halfway down my zygomatic bone. Because of the lesion locations, they were removed by a plastic surgeon, who did a great job. I became devoted to sunscreen use, though there wasn’t much on the market besides Neutrogena, which I grew to really, truly hate. To bolster protection, I used only mineral makeup, wore hats and gloves whenever possible outside. Because I literally don’t leave home without it, I’m incredibly grateful that there are now many sunscreens available from which to choose and appreciate your frequent reviews of sunscreens- I’ve found several new ones through your videos, some worked well, some didn’t (I politely ignore your reviews of Neutrogena products). Thanks so much for your hard work in keeping us so well informed.
I know it’s harder for new patients to get appointments, but if they have an area of concern, make sure they mention it when they call. The assistant might assume they are calling for a routine body check. My derm is always backed up like that but if I have something suspicious pop up, they will do their best to fit me in asap. My elderly parents were always extremely polite and did not advocate for themselves well. You are sweet to care about them ❤️
I had a "mole" show up on my scalp behind my ear in my hair and I watched it grow and change color (both of my parents have had skin cancer) so I was worried and got it checked out. Thankfully it wasn't cancerous but I was happy to get it removed and checked.
After trying multiple things over the course of months to clear my skin, I had to face the probability that the bump near my eye was skin cancer. When I went to the doctor he told me it wasn’t skin cancer. I persisted in my request of a referral to a dermatologist. The dermatologist knew before the biopsy results that it was Basal Cell. Since we caught it early the Mohs surgery was very quick and uncomplicated. Do check your skin regularly with a magnifying mirror and don’t be afraid to get a second opinion!
Will you do a video on Squamous cell? My husband had basal cell and I had a squamous cell. Mine was frozen off. We now go yearly to get checked as we are in our 60's, part of the disco generation that loved a good tan!
Thanks Dr Dray for emphasizing that darker skin tones can also develop skin cancers. A few years ago i was evaluated for a spot slowly growing on the sole of my foot (under a toe), and the sense of urgency my doctors tried to instill in me to get it seen by a specialist and then get it biopsied (it was Christmas Eve so he ordered an emergency biopsy) told me it could be serious - a rare type of melanoma, "acral lentiginous melanoma." Fortunately the biopsy didn't find cancer, though they still recommended it be removed. And it was in a spot one rarely bothers to check. It seems that although rare, it accounts for a decent percentage of melanomas in darker-skinned people (just bec lighter skins are more prone to more types).

I had a pimple pop up on my upper lip. I hadn't had a pimple in 30 years. It didn't go away and I popped it and it came right back. 3 months later I saw my derm. He removed it and said a few more weeks it would have developed into a squamous cell carcinoma. He told me to never let one of those go and to call him asap if I get another!
I just came to say thank you! My husband had a really flaky ear for ages and after this video I made him get it checked out, and we found out is skin cancer. It's not a type that spreads so just need to have it removed, but so glad that we had it checked after this!

With summer coming up here in Canada we need to be aware because this is the season where there is a higher risk of developing cancer. The pictures were very helpful! I have a much better idea of what to look for. I know it’s a long shot, but I’m using retinol body cream to try to stop some of these before they get started. I use tretanoin on the backs of my hands, since those poor things were just out there baking, until I learned about sun protection from you.
I have had several basal cell carcinoma occurrences Living in Florida for 40 years and not using sunscreen So I’m a regular at my dermatologist every three month They have a plastic surgeon there that takes them out with MOHS surgery and does a nice job with repairs. I will say they did tell me to wear sunscreen but it would burn my eyes. Here is where I learned about tinted mineral sunscreen which I apply religiously

I finally got the courage to ask for a consult.... sadly its not until October :( Question for you, should I be doing something differnent in my skin care? I don't want to make it worse, for example should I stop using my alpha hydroxi acid? or should I avoid any other products? I also use an LED light therapy machine.... Thanks so much in advance.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and worshipped the sun all through the 90s. I got A LOT of sun exposure. Regularly tanned in beds for several years. I have a new, raised, rough patch near my ear. I also have new, small moles or beauty spots in the hairline by my other ear. Yikes! I will be asking my Derm to look at these when I next go in for Botox.

Yes absolutely!! Derm nurse. Please prioritize getting a yearly skin check. Skip eating out,etc.. The fact that these are moles is concerning. It shouldn't be more than 150 bucks to get those spots looked at. A full body skin exam will be the same price as getting just a few spots looked at so just the full body.
Dr Dray, would you recommend to mix two sunscreens of the same brand together to find your perfect shade. I love the Australian gold tinted sunscreen, but fair to light is too light and medium tan is too dark for me. However, when I mix them I have the perfect shade.

Oh, no ! I think I have that but I tried n it is staying there for over 2 months. It's right at one of my tip nostrils and I thought it was due to wearing mask since I work in a park. Thank you for your video Dr Dray. I have a tiny dry patch under my eye on the bone & slightly pink. I tried moisturizing. I thought it might be the rim of my sunglasses. I've been really good about applying sunscreen every day (regardless of the weather) - especially the last 11 years. During a facial yesterday, the esthetician noticed it & told me to contact my dermatologist.

I have had rough red skin patches sometimes in the face or neck, also one in my leg close to my foot that was red and soft to the touch (can't avoid feeling a little anxious when they appear), but I think these are due to stress and skin dehydration, as they go away by themselves or when I consistently moisturize the area. You're the best, thanks to you, I started to take better care of my skin , and also ordered my first Korean skincare products 🤭

Hi, Dr. Dray :-) Is octocrylene a common eye irritant? This may just be correlation, but every time I've used an SPF that contained this ingredient, my eyes burned like the dickens. Granted, these were all American sunscreens, whose formulas have the migratory capacity of geese; they can find their way to your eye from your elbow. But I'm wondering if I should avoid it in Korean sunscreens too. I've tried the rare American sunscreen without it, and they still stung but nowhere near the literally blinding pain of the others. Perhaps I have a sensitivity. Thanks, as always, for your fun and informative content!
Thanks for posting about skin cancer I was diagnosed with basal cell last year on my check luckily my doctor did such a great job removing and I have good colligan you could barely see it. And I had a while body skin check yesterday found clusters on the hairline so I have to put sunscreen more into the hairline.
The thing that frustrates me about skin cancer is you find a spot that you're concerned about and then you call the derm office and it takes 4 to 5 months to get an appointment. It's very anxiety inducing. Editing my comment to say the transitions on the slides were pretty fun.
My son have a spot on his stomach was never healing and dermatologist said this is OK and we can remove it or you don’t need to worry about but I think he should be worry about it.

removed a mole near my eyebrow today using tweezers and a dental lance tmi and it was painless which was odd but the downside is that it left a large lesion in the surrounding area maybe this is a sign of melanoma since it seems abnormal for damage to be inflicted on an area that wasn't damaged directly
I also thought I have a nose pimple that bleeds and keeps on coming back. Thanks for this video. Unfortunately the dermatologist and GP said to just monitor it and not remove it because it is too small. Can beauty salon remove basal cell carcinoma with laser similar to the removal of sun spots?
Hi Noplay, I would see another dermatologist - if it were a basal cell carcinoma the "roots" would be bigger than what you see on the surface of your skin. I know I would rather have something small removed rather than wait for it to get bigger. Just my opinion (and I had a small BCC removed with MOHS surgery in 2020) - good luck, take care, be well.

Hey Dr Dray can I use a benzoyl peroxide wash and topical cerave retinol at the same time? It doesn’t bother my skin but I was wondering if it was the same effectiveness as layering topical retinol and topical benzoyl peroxide gel. I’m a cosmetologist :)
I was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma if the anus in 2019. Had MOHS surgery but no chemo/ rad. The surgeon said " it will never come back". Nobody has checked me since...until now. The gastroenterologist that I am seeing for back door issues does not understand why nobody has followed up, so he is and I am scheduled for an endoscopy/colonoscopy for July 1st. Why do doctors just ignore the patient? I have been treated as though my concerns are all in my head. So I have not bothered to discuss the dry, crusty and painful sores in my nose that I have had for months. It does not feel good being treated like I am an idiot by doctors. I thought I was the only one being treated this way but I am seeing it come from scores of people that it is happening to them too. So its definitely not "in my head"

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and worshipped the sun all through the 90s. I got A LOT of sun exposure. Regularly tanned in beds for several years. I have a new, raised, rough patch near my ear. I also have new, small moles or beauty spots in the hairline by my other ear. Yikes! I will be asking my Derm to look at these when I next go in for Botox.

Yes absolutely!! Derm nurse. Please prioritize getting a yearly skin check. Skip eating out,etc.. The fact that these are moles is concerning. It shouldn't be more than 150 bucks to get those spots looked at. A full body skin exam will be the same price as getting just a few spots looked at so just the full body.

Dr Dray, would you recommend to mix two sunscreens of the same brand together to find your perfect shade. I love the Australian gold tinted sunscreen, but fair to light is too light and medium tan is too dark for me. However, when I mix them I have the perfect shade.

I had half my nose removed and replaced with tissue from cheek. It was the most pain ever...watch yourself and always get checked.
Oh, no ! I think I have that but I tried n it is staying there for over 2 months. It's right at one of my tip nostrils and I thought it was due to wearing mask since I work in a park. I did ask a pharmacist and they said it happens a lot n was recommended to use nasal sprays.

Thank you for your video Dr Dray. I have a tiny dry patch under my eye on the bone & slightly pink. I tried moisturizing. I thought it might be the rim of my sunglasses. I've been really good about applying sunscreen every day (regardless of the weather) - especially the last 11 years. During a facial yesterday, the esthetician noticed it & told me to contact my dermatologist.
Thank you for this info, Dr. Dray! It's so important. I have had rough red skin patches sometimes in the face or neck, also one in my leg close to my foot that was red and soft to the touch (can't avoid feeling a little anxious when they appear), but I think these are due to stress and skin dehydration, as they go away by themselves or when I consistently moisturize the area. You're the best, thanks to you, I started to take better care of my skin , and also ordered my first Korean skincare products 🤭

I have a small, otherwise invisible “pimple” that appears nonexistent until a month or so goes by and it slowly becomes more visible.
Eventually it bursts blood. Brought it up with my doctor and she said she would look at it this coming fall (my next physical). Should I be more persistent?

Hi, Dr. Dray :-) Is octocrylene a common eye irritant? This may just be correlation, but every time I've used an SPF that contained this ingredient, my eyes burned like the dickens. Granted, these were all American sunscreens, whose formulas have the migratory capacity of geese; they can find their way to your eye from your elbow. But I'm wondering if I should avoid it in Korean sunscreens too. I've tried the rare American sunscreen without it, and they still stung but nowhere near the literally blinding pain of the others. Perhaps I have a sensitivity. Thanks, as always, for your fun and informative content!

Thanks for posting about skin cancer I was diagnosed with basal cell last year on my check luckily my doctor did such a great job removing and I have good colligan you could barely see it. And I had a while body skin check yesterday found clusters on the hairline so I have to put sunscreen more into the hairline.
Glad your Dr did a good job and sorry you had to go through that. Good reminder to put sunscreen at hairline, I think I tend to miss that spot.
The thing that frustrates me about skin cancer is you find a spot that you're concerned about and then you call the derm office and it takes 4 to 5 months to get an appointment. It's very anxiety inducing. Editing my comment to say the transitions on the slides were pretty fun.
My son have a spot on his stomach was never healing and dermatologist said this is OK and we can remove it or you don’t need to worry about but I think he should be worry about it.

removed a mole near my eyebrow today using tweezers and a dental lance tmi and it was painless which was odd but the downside is that it left a large lesion in the surrounding area maybe this is a sign of melanoma since it seems abnormal for damage to be inflicted on an area that wasn't damaged directly

Hi Noplay, I would see another dermatologist - if it were a basal cell carcinoma the "roots" would be bigger than what you see on the surface of your skin. I know I would rather have something small removed rather than wait for it to get bigger. Just my opinion (and I had a small BCC removed with MOHS surgery in 2020) - good luck, take care, be well.

Are you still a practicing physician?
I was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma if the anus in 2019. Had MOHS surgery but no chemo/ rad. The surgeon said " it will never come back". Nobody has checked me since...until now. The gastroenterologist that I am seeing for back door issues does not understand why nobody has followed up, so he is and I am scheduled for an endoscopy/colonoscopy for July 1st.
Why do doctors just ignore the patient? I have been treated as though my concerns are all in my head. So I have not bothered to discuss the dry, crusty and painful sores in my nose that I have had for months. It does not feel good being treated like I am an idiot by doctors. I thought I was the only one being treated this way but I am seeing it come from scores of people that it is happening to them too. So its definitely not "in my head"
