There’s a reason why these cars were raced as much as they were. Paul Newman raced one. When you weigh 2300 lbs (that’s NA Miata weight) and everyone around you weighs in at 3300 lbs and more, you’re going to win in the corners.
You may struggle in the straight line due to the small displacement but everyone has to take a corner sometime, and when they do, they’ll be seeing you in the inside lane. Lightweight beats horsepower every time .
Put a good driver in a well prepped and well designed light and powerful car and this is what happens. And the beautiful part is that this car drove to the track pulling a trailer, passed everything in sight, and then pulled the trailer home again. I got a '73 Z with a carbed 2.8L and the 5-speed. Drive it all the time.
I had a 260, mint. Wish I still had it.
The L-Series engine was designed over 46 years ago
very tuff old engines
Love the Nissan Comp transmissions, and the 6 cylinder on triple webbers sounds awesome. The trans and your gearing are ideal for this track. Great driving. This cars are legends on the race track. thanks for sharing.
I have a green 76 280 with 28k miles. Every time I see these videos I vicariously am behind the wheel of that car. I gotta get my thrills in life when o can. Really enjoy these videos
This video just blew my mind! How can a N/A datsun Z just blow threw everyone? Not saying its not possible but very impressive, awesome vid!
+ideamr2 It's the single overhead cam. :) Plus, the lack of any super/turbocharging saves weight. :D
because its a L SERIES
Damn good driver! Damn good car!
Because it has way north of 50k under the hood
this thing putting in laps on top gear by the stig would be soo badass!
My absolute favorite Z race car.
I have owned a stock original 71 since 1976 and will NEVER sell it.
I want to buy and build a 72 240 (custom restomod), 73 240 (custom GT "what if" car), a 74 260 (street drivable track car), a 77 280 (custom ZZAP) and an 80 280ZX (custom restomod).
Working on making it happen.
From one former race car driver to another - great driving, Scott.
I would give my left arm just to drive "The Green Hornet" one lap around Laguna Seca, but then I would have to steer with my feet!
Thanks for sharing this and all your other great videos and much continued success in future races.
Stay safe, Brother.
that's how it's done son. fucking Nice driving! now that's what i'm talking about. Love it!
best looking car on the track
God that engine sounds incredible
Best part. No Panzy Paddle Shifts. Old school. Beautiful car. I had an air dam on my 260. Wonder if that would help more than a chin spoiler?
This is so freeking awesome!
I Have owned for the past 30 years a 1974 Datsun 260Z 2 seater, and she has never, ever, let me down. These old engines really are very tough. If you've never owned one of these cars, got out and get one,you will never look back.
william Allen i hope not i just got a black 260z
@@josephlemus8307 I’ve been looking, they are hard to find
That Datsun 240z-WOW! You are driving so well and the Z it's a beautiful example of a blast to drive car under 30k.
Well...with this specific car....I can pretty much guarantee you he has over $30K in the engine alone....
My gosh that sounds good.
Jeeze that exhaust looks good!
pure joy watching this, ill be thinking of this while Im wrenching my 280z
hard to imagine a almost 50 year old 30,000 dollar datsun slaying 200,000 dollar modern cars .incredible car and incredible driving!!!
If you really think 30 grand is what this particular car is worth, you are out of your mind. He has way more than that on the engine alone.
I kept waiting for you to catch some head-to-head!
Beast
I love how the grey Porsche 911 GT3 was trying to keep up. 1970 > 2015
Hail King Z ,your majesty and thy greatness will descend through many generations, and their shall be peace throughout the land flowing with milk and honey....(shakes head)..ok,ok I just love this Z....
And after eating porsches & vettes all day, what does he have for desert?.....an ariel atom.OMG.....
this is now my favorite z.
Wanted to see him catch up with that yellow 964 that was going strong... good racing though
just to cool
that G meter is interesting- It seems he could go on for a 24 hr race, Yellow Corvette tried to hold him off, but was futile, Whoa was that a Silver Cuda I saw 8:40, make a man weep
No throttle lift off at 14:49, bet it felt just a bit light there :)
Thanks to Gran Turismo, I’ve done 500,000 laps on Laguna Seca.
Amazing car and driver. Whats your best lap there? Im surprised how much grip you have with no down force aid.
+925boosting Thank you for enjoying the video. Here's a video of the current quickest lap. ruclips.net/video/rYJ_7kl9sP8/видео.html Still making improvements...
+925boosting 1.38.71 is best for now.
where did you learn to drive?
Go Karts from 8 yrs old Thanks for watching Video
Love this Datsun. I'm building a 77 280z right now. Is there a good build log of this car somewhere on the WWW?
+Michael Melton Have a look at: lescollinsracing.com/engine/projects-engine/3435cc-z-racer
Just imagine what the L-series engines could do with a proper cross flow cylinder head?
search for OS Giken and find out!
Why is this thing so fast? No downforce?! Crazy
2,900lb, aerodynamic, 300hp l-series, engine is closer to the center of the car. Really quick with all those things together for a 70's car.
J.J. H 2900lb? ...maybe with the trailer attached. 😂
@@BraveNewwor1d try 2400lbs + change
downforce also = drag, so depends how fast the circuit, but yes the 240Z is a lifting body, I've seen photos of 240Zs at speed without a rear spoiler actually lifting up on their suspension.
racketman2u laguna has some highspeed corners
this vid is at 240 thumbs up, i think ill leave it right there.
whats your alignment specs?
+VisionWells May I ask how you made those animations of the instruments. Thanks
