I'm a 80s/90s Adult and mtn. biker, that's retired now and due to heart issues, have switch over to 20" fat-tire e-bikes, but still have my Cannondale Super V , & GT RTS mountain bikes. My first bike was a Stingray banana seat 20" Huffy bike and since then I've always ridden bikes, motorcycles. At 67, I've never lost the FUN FACTOR of biking. 😊

Love to hear about the changes in your health! Got off my mountain bike years ago due to a lack of good local trails but riding on the road 8-10 hrs a week has done wonders for my physical and mental health, and just better overall lifestyle choices. Plus it's fun as hell going fast on a bike, even if I am 40 😅. Another vote for more bike content!

I’m 40 since June 22 2024 , and I bought myself an EVIL faction 2 with about $500 worth of DEITY upgrades.. I’ve always been a skateboard guy, but this journey into dirt jumping / hardtail MTB has been so much fun!! I feel better physically and mentally .. next step is to cut back on the beers before bedtime lol!! 😂 but I’m on my way to a healthier and happier lifestyle ! If I could go back in time, I would have gotten into biking a whole lot more!!

I feel this. Today I turn 41, the year of 40 i have stopped smoking cigarettes, slashed my soda intake, changed how I eat, dropped 46lbs. Started riding in Florida this summer, struggled to get to 8 miles while there, came back to carolina and just hit my first 26 mile ride and feel like I could have done 35 comfortably.
I'm in better physical condition now than at any other point in my life, it's crazy

    That intro is so relatable!
    "bikes, bikes, bikes, bikes, bikes"
    *gets license*
    "whats a bike?"
I've done the opposite to you over the last few years, I bought a basic Roscoe in 2020 then got a used Specialized Camber full sus off a friend, the Roscoe was more fun to throw around downhill but the baloon tyres make it feel so slow everywhere else compared to the Specialized's narrower 29's

I have roscoe 8 and use it to ride local trails, only reason why i choosed it over x-caliber is that it rides much better over obsticales, downhill, big holes in ground etc, more like a tank, so its maybe not fastest, but overall comfy ride for 50km+

Very true. I got a Giant Fathom last year - hardtail similar to Roscoe - and I've been riding bike parks and local trails a lot. The limiting factor is me, I gotta learn to be a much better rider to fully take advantage of what this bike can do.

Hey Dave, I came here for the fabrication but I love mountain biking so I appreciate the additional content. I’ve been into mountain biking seriously since ‘97 but I have dropped off over the past 10 years, just got busy. I have had a ton of different bikes but bought an Ibis Ripmo a few years back and I am loving it. I wasn’t sure if I would love a full carbon bike but it has been great. At 53 my back and body aren’t what they used to be so a full suspension is kind of a necessity to keep me riding often. Much love from the NorthEast for the dirt heads that ride bikes! Keep it up!

I'm in Northern Idaho so your pacific Northwest views look very familiar to me. Congratulation on your new Isuzu project, I look forward to seeing it's rejuvenation. Awesome Dave, I've been cycling a lot since my teens. I built a super high end MTB 20 years ago but barely took it off road and mostly stuck to road bikes. About 5 years ago I built a fat bike and that's been so amazingly fun. I wouldn't have believed it from looking at it but the traction and stability are so confidence inspiring and being fully rigid I think helps with the technique. I've also found that since getting the fat bike my skill and confidence on the motorbikes has increased by a huge margin, I never had a motorbike growing up and have very little off-road experience so now am planning on getting a 300 cc dual sport

Also a former BMX'er that wasn't good at it but did it anyway, still have my 93 GT Vertigo. Wanted to get back to BMX in 2021 so I picked up a Sunday Forecaster but im 44 and beer fat so, needed to get in shape to even think about riding BMX again. So I picked up a Trek Marlin 5 gen 2 to see if I'd stick with it and it been great. Did a few upgrades with some Microshift Advent X parts, an air shock and its a blast. All in all, should have just bought the Roscoe instead!

Interesting addition to the channel. I’ve kinda considered the roscoe myself though still riding and modifying my ‘96 Kona Ti hard tail. Almost have my wife convinced to “let me” get a new one. You’re probably better off selling your haro as-is or keeping it as a spare for friends to ride.

Upgrades for the haro, if you can get a rear coil shock or a shock with a external res. *if the frame has clearance.
Another upgrade would be a better fork with larger stations.
You may also be able to upgrade the fork internals with the new damper and get more control over the fork settings.
Have been following your channel ever since the beginning and love all thing cars, Jeeps, low riders and mountain bikes.

Keep the mtn bike action coming. I'm an old BMX and 26" mtn biker. I kept going when I was active duty in So-Cal. Even raced out there in the 909. I still hae a bike but its a death trap with mechanical brakes. Still the old style 26" wheels.

Stoked to see more bikes! I've been riding bikes and working in the bike industry my whole life, it's cool to see more crossover with the off-road world.
Not sure how far you want to take the Haro upgrades, but I can't suggest ditching the + tires for a set of on the wide side but regular (2.6-2.5) tires enough. The whole "+ size" tire thing died pretty quickly for a reason, it was and still is a marketing gimmick. The outside diameter difference is negligible when running appropriate pressures, but on the trails you're riding it will work way better. Kinda like the old tall and narrow vs super wide truck tire debate, but the biggest factor on an MTB is the undamped tire volume, it makes a bike feel sluggish and unresponsive.

Cool Dave. I road bikes a lot when I was growing up. But that was in the 60's. No mountain bikes back then. But with less traffic you could ride your bike to the store without getting ran over. I'd like to get back into some biking, but I getting on in years. I do watch the Berm Peak guy a lot, he has interesting videos. I still like bikes, but....

Dave- good on you for getting back into riding and enjoying the thrill of it. I bought a new Scott full suspension 29er a few years ago to get back into mountain biking, as I used to race for quite a few years, but then lost interest. The new technology is incredible and makes riding so much more fun.
I converted both my old 26" hardtail & other full suspension to 1x drivetrain and really enjoy riding both of those as well. The hardtail is a blast at the local bike park as it is so much lighter than the FS and just quicker to throw around in the berms and quick hits. Enjoy the trails, and keep up the hustle! Looking forward to watching the next videos, as I'm a bit behind.... lol

Fellow 80's child, like you I'm also into off roading, fabricating my own stuff and hoping to build a bagged estate car one day.
Also like you I'm big in mountain biking and am lucky enough that my other half enjoys it too. An upgrade i would highly recommend is fitting an oval chainring. These massively transforms how the bike pedals making it easier to climb and you're able to pedal further for longer. Absolute black is the brand I would recommend because they have the science sorted out plus it's cnc'd and comes in lots of cool colours.
Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your channel.

Dave, Great to see you doing MTB content! I'm with you on hardtail bikes. I grew up with my legs as suspension and full-suspension bikes feel unresponsive to me... I'm about 10 years older and 10 years deeper into the mountain-bike rabbit hole... I've found the 29er wheels roll over rocks and stumps better than the rest... and finding a 29er frame with a short chain stays makes the bike nimble like a smaller bike. As a gearhead... my current bike is all parts I picked and put together. I suspect you'll end up the same way if you stay on the trails.

I relate so much to this at nearly 58, have an FZJ80 landcruiser for towing my off road caravan and camping etc, used to mountain bike a lot from 2005 on my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR which was such a great (but expensive) bike for many years until I gave up on riding and sold everything......then last year had a heart attack which I survived really well due to all the cardio from mountain biking, was told I shouldn't have stopped so took it up and fell in love with it all over again, yep you guessed it....on a Trek Roscoe 7 that looks identical to yours, it out rides my old Stumpjumper in nearly every way, 29x2.6 tyres, 1x12 drive train, boost through axles, dropper post etc just are all game changers....it's so much fun and can be ridden all day over everything ❤

However, I recently did the same thing as you, I downgraded to a hard tail with a nice fork. It really just suits my riding style better. This is also a great time to buy bikes as far as prices are concerned. You also live in a great area to showcase your riding skills. I look forward to seeing more.

I got a Roscoe 8 last May (2023, so I paid more than you 😂)to replace my 1996 Nishiki Rigid. Needless to say, HUGE upgrade. I may have been sucked in by specs (4 piston calipers? Yes please! ) I’ve not gotten to ride as much as I’d like, plus I don’t have quite the biking background you do (and I’m 12 years older) so it’s definitely overkill, but I do dig it! I just can’t ride like you. I don’t wanna break a hip! Just lose some weight and gain some lung capacity.

So great to see a few offroad RUclipsrs getting back into riding bikes! As you said, they've come such a long ways since we were kids messing around on 20in single speeds. Also fun to see the trail system I ride often. I'm surprised to see you hitting all that rocky gnar on your hardtail! This really makes me want to get a Roscoe...I just got a brand new Slash, and it's so damn good, but something about reconnecting with the trail on a hardtail is really appealing right now...well, you get it. I would highly recommend getting a chest mount for future riding videos, with superview and hyper stabilization enabled on the GoPro. Really makes for an immersive experience. Also, there's a group of rowdy but chill riders who ride those trails every Wednesday evening, so if you're interested in sharing the stoke, look up Mountain Junkie Wednesdays!

Popped up in my feed due to algorithms apparently working and glad to see you on a bike in addition to some Roadkill Garage and Faster with Newburn/Cotton!
Your seat appears to be too low or you left your dropper down (if that is a dropper) while climbing - look up saddle positioning but in short your knees are still way to bent at the bottom of the stroke. Knees should not be able to lock out straight but should get pretty straight. Couldn't tell drive angle but after you get the saddle height where it should be, the fore/aft adjustment may be needed to really dial in an efficient stroke that doesn't give you repetitive motion knee issues.

    • @thedirtheadshed
      @thedirtheadshed  7 месяцев назад +1

This bike has dropper problems. Water bottle cage gets in the way so you only get line 100mm post. It’s a small window . Currently doesn’t go low OR high enough
