As a musician and the connection I have with my own instruments, my heart breaks for this man. I was literally moved to tears knowing that he had an irreplaceable bond with this particular kora and understanding that he would never be able to replace the connection he had with it. This instrument was part of this man’s soul and that is the greater tragedy here...that part of his soul was stripped away from him. I hope you find that blissful joy again my friend. God bless.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ballake in Minneapolis a few years ago. Even though there was a language barrier, his smile and love were infectious 💞. I’ve played his CD’s over and over….. and wil continue forever 🕊
@Calloway, It's called the Kora, originally from West African. It's been played for over 1000 years. It's a form of story telling in west Africa and it's players are called Jalli. It's a tradition passed down from father to son. Sissokko can trace his ancestors upto 700+ years back. When a Jalli passes away, it's like a library has burned to the ground. That's why they start training their male (now female) children as early as 5 yrs old.
Heartbreaking to find out this instrument was disassembled so brutally. It is my first time learning about this instrument and about Mr. Sissako. What a beautiful music, What a beautiful sound and what an amazing solo performance. I hope he can get it fixed to its original shape.
this track was created to honour a Great warrior his name is Nyahling sonko. whom I can trace my lineage back to. he was a great warrior during the time of the great kabou Kingdom. this track was originally composed after his heroic in one of the wars. where he fired more than a barrel of gun powder he alone. the song to this track goes like this Barra bangnaa nyalingwo koringwoo bolota Nyaling Sonko. which translates literally to the gun powder Barrel finisher Nyaling sonko, the koring was right. because during those days when they are going to war every warrior made a promise to what they would do during the war and his promise during this particular was that he alone would finish a barrel of gun powder which was unheard of at that time.
I have been to a concert With Balleke Sissoko and it was truely amazing. Some of the best I have been to ever. However, have to join others in the condemnation of TSA and their shameful treatment of a dear and irreplaceable instrument. They don't know much about soul and music.
I was lucky enough to go and see Ballake Sissoko playing at the Arc in Bury St. Edmunds about a year and a half ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. His music is very pleasant to listen to. I would certainly recommend going to watch him if you get the chance.
Malian music is a beautiful art form. The music is both rhythmically intricate and tranquil in mood. I hope the TSA mishandling brings a wider audience into contact with it (and of course that Ballake gets a new kora)
One of my favorite instruments. Such a full sound from an instrument w only 21 pitches available in each performance and played w only 4 fingers (each thumb & index finger while the remaining support the instrument). Despite any such limitations, the Kora musical tradition developed approaches which provide the listener with a rich & very full composition/performance. A tribute to artists such as the one above and the tradition which he represents. That is my view anyway, you don't have 2 agree w me. Either way, maybe we can atleast agree that the music played in this video and which can be produced by the Kora is worthy of respect.
This saddens me almost to tears, Kora’s are probably the most beautiful instruments in the world also one of the most delicate it takes years to master this instrument it cannot just be fixed you have to tweak it overtime until it is perfection. You can’t just go to the store and buy a new one he can’t just go home and fix it, America is very ignorant! Obviously someone had opened the case, why couldn’t someone take the blame for it, I encourage you anyone to read the articles on this💖 prayers to this talented wonderful man who really didn’t deserve this horrible treatment
These are not just musical instruments. They have a soul and when someone who is not the owner of the instrument or dif not get permision from the owner to touch it, it can destroy the energy between the instrument and the owner. This is very spiritual and it was wrong for whoever it was to dismantle his kora. These instruments have souls.
We will never hear him play this kora again. I know he has another one, with guitar like plugs, but I think he preferred this one, as he played it most. What a shame. So sorry for the wonderful musician. Cannot imagine how he must have felt, probably like losing a child !
This lovely man's instrument was destroyed by racist TSA Agents in America. Sissoko's comment in the Washibgtom Post about the loss of his precious instrument was as follows, "racism and cultural ignorance is on the rise globally, would they have treated a Stadivarius violin in this manner? " But as an American of African descent myself and as a person with a Masters degree in American History from Yale University, I can say that racism and cultural ignorance is the foundation of the American experiment. The misguided ideology of white supremacy is American patriotism. Sadly, many people are in denial and are unable to grasp that evident fact. They have been lured by the idea of America through her music and movies which are her propaganda wing, used to shift the narrative away from her ugly truth. The official narrative of the US promotes "American freedom and justice" while ignoring the fact that America is a country built by African bondage and Native American genocide with a scheme of "white man's burden" and manifest destiny" added for insurance. I'm saddened that this beautiful musician's heavenly instrument was destroyed. But I can say for certain, I'm not surprised. My comments were removed from this vine once, which let's me know the propaganda of America is very effective.
Just beautiful.. the sonic quality and the cinematography here are spectacular. This version is VERY different from the "Nalesonko" on the "At Peace" Cd.. Much more spectacular, esp. the ending.
No way it will end his career. It's a horribly unfortunate incident and we can only hope to find out the truth. However, I truly believe it will make him stronger. Looking forward to his new beginning. Also realize how many new listeners Ballake will have due to this incident. What if the TSA didn't do this at all? It is a genius way to boost his listeners exponentially. Come back tomorrow and see how many views this video has. 349,722 now :)
If anything, the incident has made him more famous. It’s the reason I’m here now. Such a shame about the instrument. I am a musician, once got pulled over on my way home from band practice (because I had an air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror, which is apparently a terrible crime?) and the cop felt the need to take apart my keyboard. What a country.
This traditional music is so soothing & relaxing & classic. Shame about the wonton Destruction of a masterpiece of such a unique & beautiful instrument. Can only hazard a guess at the low life that was determined to decimate a cultural artefact. 😱
2/6/2020 TSA dismantled that instrument, congratulations America
here from reddit
Every day, we fall further from grace.
fuck man :(
@Anom Mona no it's not
TSA is a dysfunctional artifact of post 911 hysteria - misallocated resources, under-trained inspectors... par for the Bush43 legacy
Watching this because I just found out his instrument was destroyed by US customs. Shame on them, this is beautiful (2020)
Yep. Me too.

Not going to try that again. Thank You

Essayé ce titre: szerelem szerelem de sebestyen martha
sounds much like guitars & harps mixed together in harmony & it's so peaceful

Merci Ballaké des sons qui me rappellent ma jeunesse folle
Tears of joy. Even angels will have tears because US Customs destroyed his Kora. What a goddam shame.
What a beautiful instrument. Never seen anything like it before.

If something good came out of that, it's that I discovered his beautiful music. His talent is up there with Paco de Lucia and Jimi Hendrix. Stunning.
