The internet is a two-edged sword. On the one hand it has made it very easy for new talents to emerge. On the other hand, it ate up intellectual property because as soon as one download slips through the cracks, a new song becomes free content overnight. In the halcyon days of OPM amazing songwriters like Odette Quesada helped shape contemporary music culture and were appropriately, if barely, compensated for their wonderful work. But she, like many genuine songwriters of old, is almost an extinct species. These days young writers are not incentivized enough to even try. The reason why covers are popular is because infringement is widely tolerated. Young artists often choose the path of least resistance and that has led to the extinction of genuine artistry. I love Odette's music and I hope and pray that enough upstarts could be inspired enough to still try to follow in her footsteps. This is why I've resisted free-downloading Odette Quesada--and many other local songwriters--but the problem is there seems to be NO OTHER PLACE to legitimately purchase their music either. There are no more "record stores" as we knew them..everything is on RUclips..for FREE. Since I miss Odette Quesada's music too much, I did end up downloading her, but I would snap up any record, tape or CD of hers I could find from a primary seller (because buying her music as a collectible second-hand relic doesn't really help her any) so I could properly pay her my due.
