There is a phenomenon where skilled chess players can lose against new players because they are used to seeing high skill plays and are prepared to counter them, but are completely flabbergasted by the nonsensical moves of a newer player and their preparation is turned against them.
Magnus Carlson often does inoptimal moves specifically to force opponents out of their practiced moves and make them actually play the game as a matter of skill, where he tends to excel and his opponents tend to be out of their comfort zone.
Anyways that’s why I think Connor had a harder time than expected on the first matchup.

    GG WP Connor!
I can absolutely understand why you were shaking. I had the same in October playing an AoE2 game on stage, and the stakes weren't even remotely as high. It's insanely stressful.
But you know what? Given the chance, I would do it again. I'm no youtube celebrity, so it's unlikely, and money in my game is pretty scarce, but I would absolutely want it again.

This is the prequel that shows the villain of the original series (tournament arc) getting to the point he is in the series, fleshes out his character, and makes you root for him.
What that makes tournament arc 2, I don’t know.

I thought playing in Magic the Gathering Grand Prix's was intense - Connor's chess game brings chess to another level of exciting! Certainly is a big difference between competing online vs. in person, especially if you can't doodle in a coloring book between turns. Great job winning, hope you have some spicy plans for the moolah : )
