Huge fan of the bubble rig. Instead of water ,put a small hole near an end and slowly squeeze hot glue into it. It will last longer and less cracking on the pier

I have some questions. I moved here from S. IL a year ago and haven’t ever salt water fished. In fresh water I generally used baitcasters especially for bass and catfish and closed faced spin cast reels for panfish and sometimes catfish. I see most people using open face spinning reels. Is there a reason for this? What would be an inexpensive yet decent rod/reel to start with? What line would you recommend? Also how do you rig for live bait vs lures?
Welcome to paradise! We both were born in Illinois and moved down here, never looking back.
Open vs closed reels are personal preference. The biggest thing from switching fresh to salt is how each type of fishing, beach, pier, boat etc. all takes a different setup. And you NEED to spray down ALL of your gear after each use. Saltwater will destroy gear! When we 1st moved down we used our freshwater rods&reels. Since they aren’t sealed they were ruined with in a few trips, even with the spray downs.
Penn makes great starter combos. We like the Penn battles 7-8.5 med/heavy 3000-5000 series. For pier fishing rods are setup with 20 -30 lb super slick braid tied to leader. Carolina style setup, with live bait. Shrimp, pin fish etc. or you can always throw metal, good old silver spoons will get the job done. Just remember piers do not want you casting over head.
You are going to have an amazing time with salt water! Try out different types and areas of fishing to hone in on your favorite. Pier fishing is great for the environment. Surf fishing is wild and inshore fishing can be just as rewarding. Of course if you can get offshore, that’s where the epic catches are. You can’t go wrong! Just take it slow, gather your information and enjoy learning new techniques. Tight lines!🎣❤️

Gotcha plug or a spoon for Spanish, ladyfish and maybe a random jack. You can also drop down shrimp on a Carolina rig. The reds have been hanging around. Have fun and tight lines!🎣❤️

What’s y’all fishing set up
