Okay this was clearly a very well-researched and well made video, however, I think there’s a HUGE portion of Shein buyers that you neglected to address in this video (I, myself, fall into this category). This category being plus size individuals- it’s no coincidence that Shein targets low income individuals, as you touched on briefly in the outro, but it’s a fact that plus size individuals are disproportionately also low income, and by being one of very few affordable and size-inclusive companies with “trendy” clothing, Shein corners a huge section of the market that’s otherwise not being catered to. As a plus size individual myself who finds it very difficult to find clothes that fit let alone clothes that fit AND are cute, I’ve shopped from Shein for years, not out of ignorance or because I don’t CARE about their malpractice but because there is no other reliable retailer which has stepped forward offering sizes up to 5X that aren’t entirely ludicrous in price. Take Torrid for instance, what is probably one of if not THE most well-known plus size retailers in America. Not only is Torrid for their malpractice just as Shein is when it comes to their workers, but they have otherwise monopolized the plus size market by inflating prices to a ridiculous rate. A bathing suit from Torrid costs $100 or more, a bathing suit from Shein costs $5, and both companies are unethical. This isn’t me trying to argue in favor of buying from Shein, especially for those who have PLENTY of other options, I just think this is a point so seldom brought up during these discussions, and wanted to provide a bit of perspective. 🤍

Why is Torrid unethical? I didn’t know!

thank you for bringing this up! there are certainly many consumers who are underserved in the fashion industry, and it's understandable that shein may be the only viable choice for affordable and trendy plus-sized clothing, even if it's not ideal. just goes to show that there are so many gaps in the market. great point!

@@lexTS89 Admittedly I’m not super up to date on it either since it’s a little hard to navigate drama like that haha, but I believe in the past few years a lot of workers have come forward saying Torrid treated them unfairly and underpaid them. Also, like I mentioned in the original comment, it’s a little bit gross and unethical how Torrid has cornered the market, and constantly inflated the price of their clothing which is, more often than not, simple reproductions of the same products they’ve been producing for years with no new ingenuity or influence from today’s trends. Nothing as bad as Shein’s bad deeds certainly, but still just overall slimy business practice.

I agree completely I never comment but these exposes seem so one sided I can’t afford name brand clothes and thrifting is not always an option. These sites allow people to clothe there children and or themselves. Also I don’t buy stuff to be trendy I buy things because I like them and or they are affordable I could care less about what is popular I create my own fashion style.

that's why i said that it is 100% understandable if you have no choice but to buy from shein - i would never judge somebody for that. it's a problem greater than consumers that the only option for affordable clothing is a company that has severe malpractice.

Obviously I knew about the whole craze with SHEIN, but I never wanted to buy anything there. I've always been very skeptical at the very low and the packaging. Obviously the low prices seem great and affordable, but I just feel bad for the people who are having to make these clothes. Alao when every item you buy is packaged in an individual plastic bag, think what that does to the environment. I see all these people buy hundreds of dollars worth of SHEIN clothes, just to get rid of them 4 months later. We just need more people bringing attention to what this harmless looking thing can really do. I've seen other people talking about this and I'm so glad you did too.

the packaging is a huge part too! like there's no reason for a separate plasic bag for every item...especially when people order in such high quantities. it's sad and hard to watch. it's been a big discussion but i know a lot of people who still shamelessly buy from there. again, i understand if you have no other choice, but for those who are able to support a different brand who is ethical and inclusive, they should.
