"Nothing to Fear" is a masterpiece with countless remakes, it always make me wonder what would it sound like if vocal is added.
Yes! This may sound harsh, but to leave such a beautiful song behind in an instrumental that (lets be honest) is dated in its composition, feels like a waste. Wish Martin would give new life to this song with a vocal and updated production.
I love this song - even more beautiful stripped down to piano.
Glad you liked it!! VG :-)
I really love the way you enjoy and explain Depeche Mode. It is always a pleasure to check your opinion and reviews. Greetings from Guatemala, Central America.
A Broken Frame was impressive on the fact that Martin Gore pretty much played everything himself.
My guess with a little help from his friend...Daniel. Dave and Fletch could never play synths
I dont think Martin played everything. Maybe less than the 10%, 20% Daniel and 70% sequencers 😅❤
Nothing to fear was my early absolute favorite on the A broken frame album.
Martin made some really nice and unusual instrumentals up until the Violator era.
- Another favorite is of course the wistfully sleepy and gloomy "Sibling", as well as the almost equally gloomy "Memphisto". Unusual and unique.
Watching from Southern California! Thanks for this vid!
You are welcome Cory!! VG :-)
I love Broken Frame, it doesn't matter that DM were very young and a bit naive at that time , the quality of Mart's composing was really good. With all my respect to DM I prefer to listen to their early albums than last ones.
Good point 👍
Totally agree!
Agreed, but after the release of Ghosts Again, I am anticipating Memento Mori will change that!
A Broken Frame has The Sun and the Rainfall, another masterpiece!
Yes. Is a very moody and personal album.
One of the songs that proves that Martin Gore is genuinely talented.
This is my go to song when anxiety strikes. ❤
Didnt se that one coming, great choice😍. Long time since i listend to Nothing to fear. I have always loved DMs instrumental tracks, most of them are masterpieces. Thanks VG🖤
You are very welcome!! VG :-)
Great channel and you are very talented. Thank you !
Bless you and thank you !! VG 🎹😎👍
I’ve never personally liked this instrumental but a brilliant analysis that explains the complexities and intelligence that went into it.
Me neither. . . I do now, though. Thank you Vaughn.
Beautiful song. I still think that even today his legacy is underated...
He has been given the International Achievement Award from the British Academy of Songwriters so that at least is an appropriate acknowledgment of his brilliance.
"Forget about which period this came from?" Hell no! He was maybe 17 when he wrote this! and that to me is quite fascinating!
Thanks for the vid on this very classy instrumental track from Martin, always loved it but your breakdown on piano to strip it back to it's basic parts and explanation of it's subtle complexities is always appreciated Vaughan.
One can hope that the new album from them has at least 1 instrumental track and Sonic bridge between tracks as it's those little idiosyncrasies that surprise and delight and are almost a trademark of albums in the past of Depeche. It was totally absent with Spirit.
Keep up the good work Vaughan, from NZ
Strange but great choice and well played bro, good to see you again.
Thanks GiGI!! Full respect brother!! VG :-)
Nothing To Fear. One of my favourites from A Broken Frame
this and Oberkorn blew my mind when it first came out.
I still remember listening to NTF on full blast on my parent's stereo in the 80s when they were out. It rouses the soul like some of the great classical music does.
I came over from a Jean Michel Jarre background over to Depeche Mode in the late 80's, so when I found this instrumental track on the Broken Frame album I was very happy. Played it over and over again just couuldn't get enough of it.
Back then I was stumped an instrumental song was on a synth pop album. Actually, would associate Alan to compose such music. I sometimes think Martin lied when he says he is not classically trained. 😁
But these days often looking back to the A Broken Frame album, I'm in amazement that a 17 yr old boy wrote those songs!
A visit down memory lane this one, and thanks for bringing this track back from obscurity
It is such a strong piece. Thank you for reminding me about it again. So many good memories attached to that period.
I love this song....i can get lost in its mountains and valleys and i can sit amongst its trees and fields
used to like this early piece from their BROKEN FRAME album, but when SOFAD was released was amaze more on Martin orchestral background creation and vocals arrangement of ONE CARESS.
In 1995 I was in Bucharest Romania and the television newscast had "Nothing to Fear" as their cut to commercial music
That phrase, precursor of Behind the Wheel
Wonderfull video Vaughn. This song is very powerfull. It contains as you said a strange mix of complexity and completness like a full closed world in itself as a never ending loop which is as beautiful as a classical Bach melody or a mathematic demonstration. Perfection. Thank for the deep analysis. Fab.
Not musicaly trained proceeds to play what seems to be beethovens symphony🤪👌
Bless you , you are flattering me!! VG :-)
This song was actually used in the background of my local cable provider's channel guide in the early 90s.
Thank you for doing these 'Rick Beato style' breakdowns :)
Glad you like them! VG :-)
I've always enjoyed listening to Nothing To Fear.
Brilliant!
I’m really glad I came across your channel. Your music speaks louder than words, and your words are really well spoken. I seem to align with any of your musical opinions. I think that’s because we’re both right ha ha. Keep up the great work and you have a new fan.
I love this track so much. I totally agree with you 100% 👍
A great instrumental. I remember hearing it for the 1st. time in 1986 or 1987 when I started to listen to DM, as we could have the albums on recorded casettes here behind the iron curtain. I remember I thought it was a soundtrack of a scientifical documentary as the sound was so modern.
The first decade of DM works is a time for the most amazing tunes. How delicately the mood is caught - so melancholic, but not depressing. Gore has an exceptionally ethereal soul.
In a previous video you were already asked about Empathy test , what do you think of The Midnight? Found them sounds quite nice.
Thanks for that Vaughn, haven't listened to it for a while, great melody (: Now when is VG's official DM Instrumentals album release date? (;
I appreciate your enthusiasm my friend and thank you, I am more focused on my own original material. You can hear my latest HERE: vaughty.bandcamp.com/album/1984-ep
❤
at 5.38 you will get “Youre Behind the Wheel tonight” 5 years before
Mart was like 19-20 at the time!! Raw talent hard work 🖤🌹
At 5.38 could have been recycled for Behind the wheel. Or at least I think so? Another great upload Vaughn.
Great channel!
Vaughn, am I the only one who thinks Ghosts Again sounds like a demo?! Only the electro instrumental part is at the DM legacy level in sound quality.
Thought you've made a Stjarna)))
Perfect idea VG, I'd like so much to be able to play this track with my Hydrasynth Deluxe but i'm a big ZERO :-(
The first time I heard this song was on an Amiga Demo, and I didn't know it was a Depeche Mode track until much later. Here is the Amiga Demo from Circa 1987 or so. ruclips.net/video/rc-oWjSIu3g/видео.html
I always wondered how instrumentals happen for Mart. Are they planned? And are they "full songs" to him or just nice giveaways on an album?
Yes, this is the most melodic instrumental, but from instrumentals with an inexpressive melody, but a very deep atmosphere, I would single out The Great Outdoors!
Really loved this track ,besides what is the roll of daniel miller in this album and track?producer and mixer?
Hi Vaughn,
Yes. This is certainly my favourite Depeche mode instrumentals. I apologise in a recent video I thought you were a schooled musician. I said this due to your skilled piano playing. I must say though and tell me if you agree or disagree? I find schooled musicians I have met really do not understand music like this at all! They write it off! I think they come at it from a completely different mine set. Someone I know a music teacher I played him a really good OMD track called romance of the telescope. Which I think is a superb beautiful track. He just didn’t get it! He Said I really don’t like this. Then he played me a song by a virtuoso pianist. Very, very skilled top notch piano player. Top graded. But to be honest I found the actual song completely really boring and uninteresting. Why do you think this is so?
Richard
Does Martin gore write Depeche Mode songs on the piano ?
Can he actually play what Vaughn is playing ?
Not sure about their early stuff but from Music For The Masses onwards, almost all started from a guitar riff
Obercorn its a small town - the best instr of Martin Gore
You were talking about Big Muff right?
"Ok, for a start", quoth the schooled musician, "it doesn't start in Ab minor but in G# minor! Beware the enharmonic equivalents!" ;-)
Why you dont talk about the new Depeche Mode sound, the New Sounds of the Last Albuns, Sound of Universe and others. Martin Gore not only use Eurorack modules What Soft Synths Martin Use, Gareth Jones its a Fan of Analog Synths but to Soft Synths. No One abord the New Sounds in The Last albuns. And People dont care Music Theory to mutch its Important but Depeche always looked for Sound , in Past mixing Moog with Arp and other Stuff. Why not people talk about new Sounds Depeche Use ? Regards from Portugal
Can I sing ? ;)
👍👍😊🎹
Milakia
Agent orange is his best.
I love this song, an amazing tune. I am glad our Basildon lads have finally got the credit for all the talent they have. No contemporary band gets even closer to them and it was so sad nobody admitted that in the 80s
Broken Frame is on the top of my favorite DM records. This is one of the reasons.
I love that song and I really love A Broken Frame. Too bad Martin doesn’t! 😂
Thank you for this video! Regards from Saint Petersburg!
Thank you Vaughan, that was very interesting. I'm in the minority that considers "A Broken frame" amongst Depeche mode's best albums but this particular track has never been a favourite from it. So much so that I couldn't even recall it from its title alone! Hearing you break this down on piano has given me a whole new appreciation for it as a composition and a sense of embarrassment for it never having registered that it has such an obviously strong melody.
So many of Martin’s songs he chooses to sing on are very simple but complex as you say. He’s a fantastic singer in his own right and I’m mesmerized by the structure of the songs. Sometimes I have to listen to them many times and each time is a treat. Excellent analysis 🤗 🌹🎼
What did you think of the uproar last Fri over the countdown? I thought you would’ve posted a video about it.
I think their PR Team are not really up to the job. Or perhaps it was done on purpose. VG
I 100% agree with you on this. Very well done BTW. I remember the first time I heard this song, way back, when I lost my mind over the key change! This isn't just a song, it's a composition! 😉
My all time favorite depeche mode instrumental is Stjarna from the music for the masses days. Though I think that one is all Alan Wilder
The more I hear that song I believe it is all Wilder as well. 💖 Hauntingly beautiful.
Mine too!
yes yes its was me always funny for me that he could make that monkey ep when he is/was abyle make this masterpiece.. i always play this to my non depeche friend and they love it
I received a certificate to the local vinyl store for my birthday, on 26th of May, 2022. Straight on the next day I went there to buy, as you can possibly guess, one of the Depeche Mode albums that I hadn’t yet owned on vinyl at the time. Out of all their albums that this shop had A Broken Frame was the one that I didn’t possess. I gave it a listen that very day in full, probably for the first time in 11 years, though Leave In Silence and The Sun And The Rainfall are some of my favourites from Depeche. Nothing To Fear was one of the compositions that I discovered - or I should better say rediscovered. A week later my friend came to visit me, we also listened to this album and she fell in love with this composition. I can’t say that I listen to it often, but it is indeed one of the best instrumentals that Martin has ever written within DM. Anyway, too much writing from me. You explain things very well, Vaughn! And of course your playing is great as usual. I have a feeling that Memento Mori will signify the return to melodism for DM, but we shall all see
Thank you !! this track is beautiful, and this time of the band is really underestimated , love that song, and the album is my childhood gold and dreams.
NothingTo Fear! Yes, an absolutely gorgeous melody. It's a stunning song, and one of the reasons why 'A Broken Frame' holds special place in my heart. Thanks, Vaughn!
A Broken Frame has some really beautiful songs like The Sun and the Rainfall and of course Nothing to Fear.
Nothing to Fear can go from beautiful to hauntingly beautiful to creepy & dark depending on which remake or version. It really is underrated. One of my favorites being the live 1982 Hammersmith Odeon version.
I never rated ABF, other than the 2 tracks, that immediately, stood out being , ‘The Sun & the rainfall’ and ‘Nothing to fear’, but listening to Marsheaux cover version, of the album, using modern production tech, really uplifted the ketchy production of the original, to show just how good most of the songs were. Their version of ‘Shouldn’t have done that’ being the highlight. Interestingly, the exception would be ‘Nothing to fear’ where the original production still holds up better than any cover, I’ve heard to date, imho.
I agree Todd !! The Marsheaux version is outstanding !! VG :-)
My God I wish I could play that. Absolutely beautiful. As I’ve said multiple times, yours is much better than the original.
Nothing to fear seemed way ahead of anything they did on the Broken Frame album. It could fit 1000 movies as a soundtrack.
Are you talking in terms of composition or modernity because "Big Muff" from the previous, "Speak and Spell" album sounds much more futuristic than this to my ears?
No reference to the "and you're behind the wheel tonight..." Riff that originated there?
Omigosh! You’re right!!
I had an odd feeling that you were going to break-out into 'Noting To Fear'. Have to agree with you that it is one of Martin's finest. I always imagined that this track would be a perfect theme tune to some cracking drama series. Pure genius and a reminder that A Broken Frame is all actually rather good stuff.
I always Sing ”you’re behind the wheel tonight” before the keychange to the upper tone;) there something like in ”behind the wheel ” in it there:)
2:54 "So 🇬🇧 if 🇬🇧 you 🇬🇧 are 🇬🇧 one 🇬🇧 of 🇬🇧 those 🇬🇧 schooled 🇬🇧 musicians 🇬🇧 with 🇬🇧 a 🇬🇧 grade 🇬🇧 8 🇬🇧 and 🇬🇧 you 🇬🇧 find 🇬🇧 this 🇬🇧 a 🇬🇧 bit 🇬🇧 uh -🇬🇧- dh -🇬🇧- uh -🇬🇧- elementary"
Haha not offended. I often wonder what it was like for Alan working with Martin, Dave & Fletch having his grade 8 in piano.
Agent Orange will ALWAYS be my all time favorite DM instrumental but Nothing To Fear is definitely next for me!
I wholeheartedly agree!
I used to listen to a cover version of it on the album “Synthesizer Greatest, vol. 3” when I was a kid. Sounding very good:
ruclips.net/video/7pmLSFbAojc/видео.htmlsi=GCb8qJXUP7rK55fr
for me would be oberkorn. what a gem. iremember loving St jarna as well.
Amazing how you hear seeds of behind the wheel in that beautiful song. I have a huge Playlist just of martins stuff......I'm in that mood sometimes.
Can't decide Vaughan, NTF or PIMPF, although I appreciate PIMPF isn't a true instrumental, another great
video though all the same 👍
"Oberkorn(it's a small town)"is a favourite of mine,(could you do a video on it?), also "The great outdoors". Nothing to fear is great.Good video.
This song is much better than the whole Delta Machine and Spirit albums alltogether. I never agreed with Martin when he claimed that A Broken Frame is their worst album. Maybe in a production level, but it have really great songs. Perhaps, it should be hard to him accept the fact that the new ones are really very mediocre material.
"...not complex in an annoying jazz kind of way!" Strike. Again! I love you for these sideswipes. :-)
Flabergasted as to how you do what you do! You sure your not trained???? Youre piano tinkling is heart breaking and romantic
“Nothing to Fear” is also a song lyric that is sung multiple times in the Pet Shop Boys’ track Integral, in the revamped live version.
You are right, Sir. Thank you. Now I like this melody better. -Andy Ry Denmark
Hello, Vaughn, where is the video with your favourite 10 melodies and riffs of DM?
I am in love with the original sequence
And the bass line as well - it is so synth classy
It feels like soundtrack for movie, but really good one
Please make a review of "Not tonight live in Berlin"
great
I named my bull Martin Gore!
Thank you so much for reminding us of existence of beautiful 'Ghosts of the Past'. I really forgot how amazing this song is, and your stripped down version showed us its core. I hope the Big Muff is next in the line. Or Tora! Tora! Tora! as another example of 'gore-ism' (by the way, I really like you coined this term).
Yes please to "Big Muff"! I was actually hoping that was what this video was about. However, this has actually worked out for the better; as this has always been unfairly overlooked by me. It's only through hearing Vaughn play it on a piano that I've come to appreciate just what a beautiful melody it possesses.
Their best instrumental, period
